To feel nobody should watch the new Netflix show "insatiable"

I'm a young woman who like many other young women in my generation has struggled with weight issues and ED's.

This new Netflix show is about an unpopular "fat" girl who becomes skinny over a summer break and goes on to become popular. There was a huge petition by a young woman named Florence Given who tried to get the show cancelled due to a huge proportion of young girls and women speaking out saying the advert for the show alone was enough to trigger their eating disorder. I believe it got over a hundred thousand signatures.

The show has gone on to be shown on Netflix and I honestly dread to think of how many young girls would be influenced by the poor story line. Why in 2018 are we still telling young women the only way they will be attractive and liked is if they are skinny and attractive? I find it horrifying.

Also, I managed to watch OITNB without feeling the urge to take drugs or Shiv someone.

TemptressofWaikiki · 08/08/2018 12:44

You sound a bit hysterical OP. In fact, you’re not a million miles away from the kind of folk in the Fifties who would stand outside cinemas on the say so of the church to ask people to boycott a movie because shock horror there is a millisecond flash of nipple. You haven’t even seen the actual program or know the full context. Yes, I dislike fat-shaming and the idea that the heroine has to transform to make herself acceptable/popular. But at the other hand, I am also not keen on the masses of Instagrammers who are super obese and push the myth of being healthy and a role model to young girls. It is a really thin line between positive body acceptance and completely skewering the impact on mobility and overall health of being obese. I actually don’t think that a storyline in which a young girl sheds her ‘puppy fat’ is necessarily wrong by default.

RideOn · 08/08/2018 12:45

If it is the story line you suggest, it sounds boring and already done, so I doubt it will be a massive hit.

If it is a parody or brings another angle to it, maybe it is worth watching.

I don't know, I have never seen it, but I don't think you can ban it on the basis of your OP.

Itsnotabingthingisit · 08/08/2018 12:48

Yeah, I think I might wait to watch the programme before getting the pitchforks out.

Also, Shallow Hal is very deep film - the whole concept of it is that Hal sees beyond the perceived 'ugly' . It not only deals with weight, but also facial disfigurements.

If you really want something to complain about that promotes terrible ideals and body image, I would concentrate on the band ' Little Mix' .

Their whole appearance in general and the absolutely disgraceful message in the song and video ' Black Magic' would stop me from letting my daughter watch or listen to them.

MrsSteptoe · 08/08/2018 12:48

I lost count of the number of parents who said that The Hunger Games sounded appalling and why on earth would anyone want to read it. I think it's an absolutely brilliant introduction to the psychology and politics of colonialism.

KreigersClones · 08/08/2018 12:50

I’m literally going to watch this now, thanks OP 👌

KreigersClones · 08/08/2018 12:51

Aww, I love little mix

Leesa65 · 08/08/2018 12:51

To much of others thinking what we should and should not watch, or think, or feel

Jog on.

Tracey Ullman's overly woke support group. It might help you.

YABU censoring a show is problematic enough but seeking to censor something that you haven't even seen is quite extreme. As other posters have said there is very little that isn't 'triggering' for someone, I can't cope with books/shows in which dogs die, should I call for them all to be banned? In addition Netflix is a streaming service you can choose to watch or not watch any programme, so if you don't like something don't stream it. Or if you disapprove of their programming don't renew your subscription.

TemptressofWaikiki · 08/08/2018 13:01

OK, I got curious. Just saw the trailer. It actually looks interesting because it does deviate from the usual formula of 'ugly duckling turns into beautiful swan' The heroine wants revenge for the pain she endured and it appears to have quite interesting plot lines. I will watch it. Thanks OP Grin

RavenWings · 08/08/2018 13:01

Ah you've just reminded me that I was going to watch that - thanks OP, I'll add it to my list so I don't forget!

Poloshot · 08/08/2018 13:03

Yeah you are being unreasonable lol

Dottierichardson · 08/08/2018 13:04

I've added it to mine too! MrsSteptoe heard the same thing about Hunger Games ended up reading the whole trilogy, great story, great politics, excellent role model for young women.

SilverySurfer · 08/08/2018 13:05

Pathetic and now I am irritated because I have a huge aversion to anyone thinking it's their business what I think, do, eat, drink or watch. I shall add this to my watch list even though it is not the sort of thing I would normally watch.

The words 'Get a Life' have never been more apt.

CalonGlas · 08/08/2018 13:07

from what little I've read about this show, it's not that the heroine goes on a diet and loses the weight over the summer - she's punched, as part of the bullying about her weight, has to have her jaw wired shut, and so almost accidentally becomes an 'acceptable size' for the cool girls. She then exacts revenge on the bullies, now she's accidentally become thin enough to be part of their crowd.

I can see both sides of the argument but if the over-riding narrative is about how cruel and stupid fat-shamers are, then is that not a good thing to explore? And has anyone even seen it yet?

Furiosa · 08/08/2018 13:12

Feels like it has a ''Carrie'' vibe to it. Cool. Cool, cool, cool.

JustTheLemons · 08/08/2018 13:12

I've seen it. It's pretty good.

The petition and your hysteria are nonsense. She does not flourish into a beautiful swan and then become happy- she in fact is livid that all these people that hated her fat now like her, as in her eyes nothing has changed. She therefore exacts revenge on them for being shallow pricks who only like her when she is thin.

Actually a decent message really!

amusedbush · 08/08/2018 13:13

It looks like fucking garbage and I signed the petition to have it banned because the message is just tired and awful.

amusedbush · 08/08/2018 13:15

And OP, don't worry too much about the comments on this thread. I'm part of a facebook group where this show was discussed the overwhelming majority feel the same way as you and I do.

“I don’t like a TV show I haven’t seen, therefore it should be banned”

“I don’t agree with a book I haven’t read, therefore it should be banned “

Do you see where this censorious, illiberal, authoritarian nonsense ends, OP?

MotsDHeureGoussesRames · 08/08/2018 13:23

Why should it be banned just because you don't like the message?! Do you genuinely believe that your dislike should prevent others being able to exercise their right of choice? You have yours: don't watch it! This starts to become censorship. It's nonsense that has to stop!

thethoughtfox · 08/08/2018 13:24

You have an ED so I understand your reaction. However, can you imagine what would be left if we banned everything that might trigger someone with an illness or mental health issue?

SavannahSky · 08/08/2018 13:25

amused you do realise that there's no way on earth your 'petitions' will get it banned....don't you?

Bless
