To feel nobody should watch the new Netflix show "insatiable"

I'm a young woman who like many other young women in my generation has struggled with weight issues and ED's.

This new Netflix show is about an unpopular "fat" girl who becomes skinny over a summer break and goes on to become popular. There was a huge petition by a young woman named Florence Given who tried to get the show cancelled due to a huge proportion of young girls and women speaking out saying the advert for the show alone was enough to trigger their eating disorder. I believe it got over a hundred thousand signatures.

The show has gone on to be shown on Netflix and I honestly dread to think of how many young girls would be influenced by the poor story line. Why in 2018 are we still telling young women the only way they will be attractive and liked is if they are skinny and attractive? I find it horrifying.

blackchina · 08/08/2018 13:51

Now I REALLY want to watch it.

Dottierichardson · 08/08/2018 13:52

There's a difference between tired fat jokes within a show and a show that is entirely centered around it.

Dietland is almost exclusively centred on the lead's weight, one of the main characters in This is Us centred on her weight. Why single out this show? The only difference is that the character loses the weight, and it's a satire about that, so not even a 'hey isn't it great she's thin now.' There's a logical inconsistency at work here.

barleyfive · 08/08/2018 13:55

Most programmes like this show that the grass isnt actually always greener, and they actually preferred life before- so judging before watching isnt overly useful. I was always an overweight teen and I would probably give it a watch; I find 13 Reasons much more problematic.

PeakPants · 08/08/2018 13:57

Well, I haven't watched it either but I believe it is in fact about how she becomes skinny and infiltrates their gang and being the shallow fuckers they are, they accept her without question as she is now skinny. In reality, she intends to wreak revenge on them for how they treated her and she is still friends with her old friends. So not quite as you described.

petbear · 08/08/2018 14:01

I have been a bit of a chubster since I was a child - had a few slim years in my 20's, (maybe 10 years of being a size 12,) but have been a size 16-18 throughout most of my 30's and 40's. I have never ever been offended by any film or show that has a giggle at the expense of chubby folk.

If I did think something was 'offensive' to me, I wouldn't watch it! It's really that simple!

And I am also sick to death of this 'triggered' thing that loads of people (usually on twitter) come out with.

I remember the 'nothing tastes as good as being slim feels' logo being etched onto a set of bathroom scales (I think B & M sold them maybe...) and some young 20-ish woman on twitter went batshit, and said 'disgraceful, shameful, TRIGGERING!' Confused

I mean, no wonder they're called snowflakes!!!

OP, YABU. You don't get to tell people what to watch. Get over yourself FFS!

FlotSHAMnJetson · 08/08/2018 14:14

You are 100% within rights to be outraged.

But that doesn't mean we all have to be.

MarklesMerkin · 08/08/2018 14:17

Banning and reporting shit you don’t like. You people are fucking pathetic Absolutely this. You can police what YOU want to watch but don't try and police what every one else watches FFS! Should we ban anything that deals with mental health, rape, miscarriage, murder or any of the other million controversial topics just because some one out there might feel offended? Beyond ridiculous.

I'm an asexual person living in a very sexual world and it is frustrating the lack of 'normal' asexual representation in films/books but I wouldn't then think to try and ban every film/book that has a sexual scene in it!

HisNoodlyAppendage · 08/08/2018 14:22

Well done op you’ve just boosted their viewing figures 😁

KoolAidPickle · 08/08/2018 14:34

You are 100% within rights to be outraged

Not unless they have actually seen it. They are 0% within rights to be outraged by a show they haven't watched!

sonjadog · 08/08/2018 14:43

Never heard of this. Now I am curious.

Junkmail · 08/08/2018 14:46

If you don’t like it, do watch it. It really is as simple as remembering that there is an off switch.

Junkmail · 08/08/2018 14:47

That should read don’t watch it

WorraLiberty · 08/08/2018 14:50

So has the OP flounced, or gone to watch a box set?

CheeseTheDay · 08/08/2018 14:55

YABU.

I must admit, when I first heard about the show, my immediate reaction was like yours.

However then I read what the writer, and the star both said, and realised what the message is.

The message isn't fat-shaming, it's about the impact that fat-shaming/bullying can have, the damage it can cause. After all, it's clear from the trailers, that when Patty loses the weight, rather than it make her happy, she becomes fixated on revenge.

I think it will be a fascinating watch.

PlantsArePeopleToo · 08/08/2018 15:59

Is this out yet? It sounds interesting, I want to watch it.

Thanks OP Smile.

Biologifemini · 08/08/2018 16:02

It doesn’t sound a great show.
Being overweight is going in the same direction as smoking and becoming socially unacceptable. It isn’t pleasant but that’s how things are. Being overweight isn’t a benign thing and much like smoking it is really bloody difficult to treat.

TemptressofWaikiki · 08/08/2018 16:33

OP and her outrage reminded me.... Grin

HopefullyAnonymous · 08/08/2018 16:34

The trailer looks good, thanks for pointing me in the right direction OP!

rightknockered · 08/08/2018 16:46

I was I
Looking for something new to watch. Thanks OP

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 08/08/2018 16:59

As the show hasn't been released yet and all that is known about it is that an overweight girl who was being bullied lost weight and wants revenge YABVU indeed.

No one knows what the story or message of the show is going to be and saying that it's "obviously going to be x or y" when it hasn't even been seen yet is blinkered in the extreme.

Knee Jerk Reaction and Snowflakery

(I'm overweight)

harvester77 · 08/08/2018 17:01

I'm going to watch it and no one is going to tell me what to watch or do. Sorry about your experiences but that doesn't mean you can tell others what to do. I refuse to live in Nanny state and be told so. If it triggers you feel free to not watch it.

TheOrigFV45 · 08/08/2018 17:12

Sounds similar to Muriel's Wedding.

Strugglingtodomybest · 08/08/2018 17:53

It looks good. I'd never heard of it before, I reckon op is a Netflix marketeer!

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/08/2018 18:46

Hmm, I wondered if OP had a vested interest
