What time is reasonable - no water in holiday cottage

itsnosoap · 08/08/2018 06:31

6th day in holiday cottage (UK) and have woken up to no water. That's no water at all, not just no hot water.

Would IBU to call the owners at 7am or is that too early?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 08/08/2018 06:32

Maybe 8am?

redcaryellowcar · 08/08/2018 06:32

I think I would wait until 9. Do you have any drinking water?

NicoAndTheNiners · 08/08/2018 06:33

Well I would ring the water board first. See if there’s a wider problem.

chocatoo · 08/08/2018 06:34

8 am sounds reasonable.

TheBitterBoy · 08/08/2018 06:35

Definitely ring the water company, you can do that any time, their phone lines should be open.

dangerrabbit · 08/08/2018 06:35

7am

Fuckedoffat48b · 08/08/2018 06:35

I would call now. It needs fixing.

BoomBoomsCousin · 08/08/2018 06:35

I think 7 am is fine. No water is not a minor thing.

sexnotgender · 08/08/2018 06:36

Water company is definitely a better bet! Or look online, you’ll often find information on issues.

itsnosoap · 08/08/2018 06:37

Thanks everyone, I might leave it till 8am.

I've no idea who the water board is but will try and find out.

BigGreenOlives · 08/08/2018 06:37

Look on line, see if there is a problem for the area. Is the house somewhere remote that might have a private water supply (well)?

itsnosoap · 08/08/2018 06:39

No, not remote, it's in a village.

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 08/08/2018 06:40

Check with neighbours if their water is off. It’s more likely to be a burst water main than a problem with the individual house.

At a guess a country cottage is on a spring. In this weather and if you had baths or long showers yesterday it has dried up. The water company won't care as properties on springs aren't their customers. I would call the owner... Not that the can do much except order up a water tank or wait until the settling tank refills.

We are sharing baths, taking washing to friends on mains water and only flushing when absolutely necessary. All so what water we do have can be used to fill the water troughs for our neighbours animals.

Unescorted · 08/08/2018 06:46

You don't have to be remote to be on a spring. We are in a village.

Happyoldbat · 08/08/2018 06:52

Ring them at 7am - if they need a tradesman of any description it will give them more time to get hold of one.

itsnosoap · 08/08/2018 06:57

I'm fairly certain it's not supplied by a spring. It's not really a cottage, it used to be a small hotel so I doubt it isn't mains connected.

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 08/08/2018 06:58

If it was spring fed you’d know because they’d have to make you aware at the time of booking. Some people who are immno suppressed wouldn’t risk it.

speakout · 08/08/2018 06:58

Can you locate the mains stopcock? The water may be turned off.

NicoAndTheNiners · 08/08/2018 07:00

If there was water yesterday and not today it’s very unlikely it’s the stopcock. Unless it’s kids arsing about I guess but people don’t tend to interfere with other people’s stopcock. The link I posted earlier will tell you the water company who will be open now.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/08/2018 07:04

7am is fine with zero water, but text first, so they can absorb it and ask them to call you. If they haven’t called back I would call them at 7.30
Personally I would be going out to see if I could spot any neighbours.

itsnosoap · 08/08/2018 07:09

Thank you, NicoAndTheNiners, that link was very helpful.

There are no works or incidents in the area according to the waterboard website. It actually suggests calling a plumber! I can't call them until 8am though

I'm not sure why some people don't think the owners can do anything though. It's their house and as we are paying to stay in and so really it should be them to find out what's going on and fix it if possible. Or am I wrong?

OP posts:
FiveGoMadInDorset · 08/08/2018 07:11

At the very least they should be able to provide a number of a plumber or if they don't live in the area give you the contact number fo whoever looks after/cleans their house as they should have the information
