My first ever AIBU and apologies if this has done before, the headline is two days old, but seriously?? :

Women will have to give up work to look after parents unless EU care workers are given priority after Brexit

Fuck that! They can't be compelled to do FA. All this harking back to the 1950s can kiss my arse.

StrawberrySquash · 07/08/2018 23:46

Didn't the report say 'growing numbers of people, "especially women", will have to give up their jobs to provide "informal care" for loved ones.'?
I read that as it will have this effect on the population and, because society expects women to do the caring, it will hit women disproportionately.
So shit headline, Telegraph, (there's a surprise). I would have put 'will be forced' rather than 'will have to'.

AdoraBell · 08/08/2018 00:03

Yes, society still expects women to do all the caring. My DH seemed to think, or rather assume, when we first met. that if his mother were to die then his father would have to move in with us. At the time I was working full time and commuting 3 hours a day Hmm

BendyBusBuggy · 08/08/2018 00:14

I'm just mind boggled because I had assumed that articles are run past editors before they are published so there must have been at least two people who thought this is a fine statement.
In 2018...

Aren’t we missing the point here?
The figures re nurses and doctors are quite realistic.
Yes there’s the point about women being carers but that aside if we actually go through with the absolute farce that is Brexit this is just the thin end of the wedge

Rebecca36 · 08/08/2018 00:22

Why only women, why not 'people'? Men have parents too.

In any case most will get some help from carers, there are allowances for that and plenty of people work as carers, not just EU workers.

bridgetoc · 08/08/2018 00:25

Ignore, and file under project fear.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 08/08/2018 00:27

Project fear my arse.
Be afraid be very afraid

IAmInsignificunt · 08/08/2018 00:32

Project fear my back hole.
I work on a ward where we had over 60% EU workers in 2016, now it is something like 22%. We have a massive, massive shortfall.

The thousands of NHS and care home workers from the EU who have gone home (as a direct result of Brexit) will have an awful, awful impact long term on this country.

LeftRightCentre · 08/08/2018 00:32

LOL @ the implication of the Torygraph being engaged in project fear.

hiphopchick · 08/08/2018 00:44

Ooooh yay GOODY1

Brexit scaremongering bullshit propaganda No 77!

VanGoghsDog · 08/08/2018 00:47

And why would the Telegraph be indulging in scaremongering propaganda? They wouldn't. The report is accurate, the headline is silly.

sunflowersinthesky · 08/08/2018 00:48

Probably a stupid question, but how did we manage before the influx of EU workers in recent years?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 08/08/2018 00:50

So hiphopchick do tell us your educated reasons as to why this is “scaremongering bullshit propaganda “

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 08/08/2018 00:54

sunflower it’s hardly been an influx over recent years ffs!

Uncreative · 08/08/2018 00:54

It is a headline and therefore click bait.

I do think they have different standards for online and paper publishing though. The mistakes in online papers drive me nuts! Spelling, grammar and so much more.

I am now wondering if my first sentence needs a comma but this won’t be published in a newspaper so I hope that (slightly) lower standards will be acceptable.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 08/08/2018 00:57

Paywalled, but I'm curious about the actual article does it discuss the fact that women are the primary care giver in most of these circumstances? TBH I'd probably post a headline like that myself on FWR but the gist of the thread would be that women are the ones who left holding the baby (or grandad)

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 08/08/2018 00:58

Not bullshit. It will be reality.... There already is a shortfall which is getting worse.

There are increasing numbers of frail elderly as we are living longer

travellinglighter · 08/08/2018 01:05

Hi Iaminsignficunt, obviously you’ve been fooled by project fear and are imagining the staff shortages. You do know the torygraph is famous for its active role in project fear and all those pro Brexit headlines were just false flags to lull us into submission.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 08/08/2018 01:11

Ffs the staff shortages are a bloody reality now! When will you stupid brexiters get your head out of your arse and take a look at what we are really facing?!?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 08/08/2018 01:12

It’s not a matter of Tory/Labour anymore!

Willofthesimpletons · 08/08/2018 01:19

Women will bear the brunt of the effects of Brexit in general. Diminished/slashed rights, caring for relatives, going without food if No Deal happens to feed kids etc.

And just piss right off with your Project Fear shit. So tired of it. Just shouting PROJECT FEAR like brainless idiots. Never engaging with the problem. Just shouting PROJECT FEAR.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/08/2018 01:22

Lone parents are forced to work so In effect prevented from their caring duties.
Now they're wanting people to give up their jobs to care for their elderly parents.
I wish this government would make up their minds. Do they value the role of the care giver or not. WeLl it seems they do when it's convenient for them.!!!!!.
Also I think people forget not everyone has the luxury of staying at home. Some people have to go to work.

thebewilderness · 08/08/2018 01:29

Whenever jobs are scarce there is pressure on women to leave the work force to make way for men.
Sometimes it is couched in proper parenting expectations for women who have children, and other times it is presented this way, it is always about making way for men who need jobs instead of women who just want them.

CecilyNeville · 08/08/2018 01:32

The other papers had similar headlines though. It's covering the wording of the DoH report, it's not Telegraph 'opinion'.
