Separate competitions - European swimming championships and European Athletics championships. They have no links other than they are for European teams only. There are European and World championships for all sorts of different sports.

Well I never. I assumed it was the same competition. What's the biking then?

It is the same competition, just held in different places.

It's only the athletics that are in Berlin. All other events in Scotland. Most in Glasgow.

This is the first time that an attempt has been made at a "European Championships". Various international bodies have decided to hold their European competitions at the same time, in the same city, under the umbrella of the European Championships. It's not just swimming - Glasgow has gymnastics, cycling (including mountain biking and BMX), triathlon, rowing, diving is in Edinburgh and golf at Gleneagles. Glasgow doesn't have a world class athletics track - the Commonwealth games track and field was held in Hampden which had to be specially converted and has now reverted back to being a football stadium. So the athletics are in Berlin.

It's a sort of "try it and see whether it works" event as it's the first time it's been done.

I'm in Glasgow and it's a fabulous event for the city. We were at the cycling the other day and there is so much going on away from sport in the city centre.

I'm going into George square on Thursday to see what's going on there. I never seen anything of the commonwealth games in 2014 as I was working every night.

Shows what I know then! Is it a new thing? I always thought all Euro championships were separate, eg there are Euro championships for ice-skating etc. I am on hols at the moment so haven't seen any of it...... When do they finish?

Ericaceae · 09/08/2018 14:41

We're near Glasgow, and it's been great fun. There's a cultural programne too, and lots of free stuff for the kids. We were right at the finish line for the men's cycling time trials yesterday, and the city's been buzzing.

I think I read that they decided to bring all the competitions that they could together to try and make it feel more like a mini olympics as generally things like European diving / swimming etc don’t get the publicity they warrant .

SillySallySingsSongs · 09/08/2018 14:49

The Athletics had already been awarded to Berlin before they decided to make it multi sport event.
