New pram for second DC?

Blueberrybouquet · 06/08/2018 22:47

Hi all, I’m expecting my second DC in three months and was just wondering whether most people buy another pram? For my DS we got the Bugaboo Cameleon, so it was pretty expensive. It’s in fairly good condition but obviously would need a bit of a clean / spruce up. There’s something a bit exciting though about pram shopping though and wheeling a new baby in a brand new model...! Am I being totally over indulgent and unreasonable? Celebs and people I follow on social media all seem to get a new model with each child but is this normal?! Thanks in advance!

*are not is

With a bugaboo, you could buy new colour packs to make it seem a bit different a new. Much cheaper than a whole new pram.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 07/08/2018 09:12

Our pram was second hand when we got it, it was falling apart after out first baby and it's still going (on its last legs) with the second. Hadn't got a new one because I can just think of a million better things to spend a few hundred quid on. But just do whatever you fancy - no one is going to notice. Or care. Either way

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 07/08/2018 09:14

I had 4 dc and got new prams for each of them. That happened partly because I bought one pram which didn't have swivvel (sp?) wheels so was a nightmare to push. I also changed cars and one pram wouldn't fit in the boot. Some prams feel nice and light in the shop, but add in a 6 month old baby and a load of shopping and they turn out to be unwieldy.
Last baby had big age gap, so had sold all old baby equipment so started from scratch.

simplepimple · 07/08/2018 09:18

I had 7 prams for each of my 3 dc so 21 in total because I love having different ones for different things and every time I got one I'd find out that this one wasn't as ergonomically easy to handle as another one. They weren't all new though and I'd sell previous models to pay for new ones. I guess I just love prams. Perhaps I'm destined to be an old lady who pushes a dog round in one....or a reborn doll. Blush

So op - if you'd like a new one and you have the funds for it - why not?

HouseOfSix · 07/08/2018 09:21

Most people I know have more than one pram for their children. I have loads. Not necessarily a new one per child but various prams to fit different circumstances. I don't think that's at all unusual based on my friends and family. I don't see how it's wasteful? I'm presuming the OP is not planning to chuck the bugaboo straight into landfill. My prams have been a mix of new and second hand, and I've also given away, donated and sold various prams. OP, do whatever you want with your own money!

SoyDora · 07/08/2018 09:23

I researched my one pram thoroughly to make sure if it had everything I needed and it cost us £750 so I had absolutely no need or desire for more than one!

LIVIA999 · 07/08/2018 09:28

Prams were my favourite bit about having babies.
I love the technology of them. I still love prams and when my friends have babies I love helping them chose.
Personally I'd get a pram for my dog if my family didn't disown me so I'd say go for it but sell your other one to get money to go toward new one.

SparkyBlue · 07/08/2018 09:30

I bought a new double buggy when my second dc was born as my dd hated to walk so at one stage my tiny hall held my uppababy vista, my out n about nipper and my uppababy glux stroller as I used them all at different times depending on where I was going. If you are bored of your original pram then you could sell it on and buy something new. I loved shopping for baby stuff so I totally understand.

AFigTree · 07/08/2018 09:32

We spent a lot on a lovely Joolz pram for DC1 and are now using it for DC2. If I had a third child I’d probably keep using it! Seems bonkers to get a new one.

ToesInWater · 07/08/2018 09:33

If you have one in decent condition I would think it's silly to buy another but I must admit that when I had my "surprise" DD having long since sold all my baby equipment after the boys buying a funky three wheeler for her was lots of fun 😁 I loved that thing.

zebrapig · 07/08/2018 09:35

It's totally up to you but if there's nothing wrong with the one you have then I don't really understand buying a new one. DS is in the same pram DD had 3 years ago, I chose it because I loved it and the features it had and I still like it. For £50 I was able to send it back to the manufacturer for a service - it came back with new wheels, new basket and the missing trim replaced. I almost felt like I had a new pram,it certainly looks in better condition now!

AFigTree · 07/08/2018 09:36

Rather than buy a new pram, why not put that money into savings for your new DC? £500-£700 is not a bad start. You could split it between both your DCs. That would make me feel so much better than a new pram.

Bellabutterfly2016 · 07/08/2018 09:42

My mamas and papa's one is still in really good nick I won't be replacing it, dd3 had it and it's fine.
What a waste of money!!!!

SexTrainGlue · 07/08/2018 09:46

People buy a new pram when the first one was a bit crap and isn't fit to carry on in use. Big ticket items really should last for several DC.

So probably go for a different make, and look for a better build quality, and cross your fingers that whatever you choose if rather more fit for purpose.
(If you have money to burn, just buy what you want, whenever you want it).

SluttyButty · 07/08/2018 09:47

I had to get a new one with my second, a double one because buggy boards didn't exist back then. Had they existed then I'd of kept the first one and stuck eldest child on the board.

PrimalLass · 07/08/2018 09:52

I did get another one but only because I hated the first one.

I bought a second hand Bugaboo for baby 2.

sailorcherries · 07/08/2018 09:58

I got a new pram for DS2 as there was an almost 7 year age gap between him and DS1. I also gave DS1's pram to a charity that helps struggling families as I didn't think I'd have more children.

PurpleTigerLove · 07/08/2018 10:13

It’s not normal . Stop following celebs on social media .

Cutesbabasmummy · 07/08/2018 10:19

If you have money to burn go for it.

I sold our travel system and bought a City Mini Lite when DS got to 1.5. It was easier to fit on a plane and lighter to push and we didn't need the pram any more as he was not laying flat.

If we were planning on having more children which we're not, I would have kept the Silver Cross Travel system, for them.

shinyredbus · 07/08/2018 10:25

If you have the money - do what you like
Don’t have the money - reuse like the rest of us.

minisoksmakehardwork · 07/08/2018 10:50

Op. My sister thought it was perfectly normal to have a brand new pushchair for each of her children, plus buy various second hand ones in between (4 dc).

I, on the other hand, was mighty miffed that I was unable to use my original pram after my third pregnancy as I had twins. My pram was perfect for my first two. We did use it as an extra Moses basket though (came with a stand).

We did end up buying another double pushchair with the twins as during a spell of particularly bad weather we realised the wheels on the double stroller were not great for rural Icey pavements. But we bought a cheap second hand three wheeler and sold for a profit!

If you can justify the spend and will not lose money, then there's no reason not to do what you want. But if it's going to cause you hardship elsewhere, don't.

Personally I loved pushing ds1 in the same pram as dd1. Plenty of fond memories.

Essexgirlupnorth · 07/08/2018 11:01

Still got the uppababy vista we had for our first if we ever manage to have a second. Need a new stroller type buggy though because the one we have is a bit knackered

butlerswharf · 07/08/2018 11:17

I'd get a new one too. I fully intend to eBay my bugaboo once my daughter's out of it and then I'll get a new pram if and when I have another baby. It's personal choice. If you really want to then go for it and enjoy it.

funinthesun18 · 07/08/2018 11:23

I used DC2’s pram for DC3 because I still loved the pram and it was in very good condition. If I didn’t like the pram anymore I would definitely have bought another one. After DC3 outgrew it I got rid, and for DC4 I’ve bought a gorgeous brand new Mamas and Papas one Smile.

I totally get the pram shopping excitement!
