To run out the shop and kick my ankle?

toocool4cats · 06/08/2018 14:32

Because the person on the till made an error that resulted in me getting a bottle of sun cream for free. Am I naughty for not returning to pay and shouting YES as soon as the car door shut ?

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 06/08/2018 17:29

Till! I hate this bloody iPad.

starzig · 06/08/2018 17:44

I would have taken it back. The only time I wouldnt is if I didn't realise till I got home and the journey back is unreasonable.

Fluffyears · 06/08/2018 17:45

I assume the item didn’t scan so the till won’t be short....and yes i Worked in retail for years in my younger years. Ifbthebtill said £15.00 and OP paid £15 why would the till be short? It’s an error not theft.

Sparklingbrook · 06/08/2018 19:03

Is that what the error was-the bottle not being scanned? The OP never said.

Shops do stock counts so things going missing don't go unnoticed, it's not just at the till.

Nicknacky · 06/08/2018 19:32

sparkling Well, how else do you expect it to have happened?

And yes the stock levels won't be accurate. I was a stocktake controller at one point in my retail years but they won't be able to work out when it went missing.

And I assumed from your snidey reply to me that you were a retail expert so I'm surprised you didn't consider the possibility of it not going through the till.

RiddleyW · 06/08/2018 19:37

Till won’t be short. That wouldn’t make any sense unless you think the till rang up £6.50 or whatever but the assistant then mentally deducted the price of the suncream for some weird reason and then gave change accordingly.

FatToni · 06/08/2018 19:41

I did worse the other day.

Packed my shopping in Lidl, paid and left. Got home and realised I had a big box of washing powder but couldn't remember buying it.

Checked the receipt and it wasn't on there...and it's a brand I don't usually buy. I must have just grabbed abandoned powder from the end of the till and put it in my bag 😲

I've no intention of taking it back. Our Lidl is so understaffed you wait for ages to be served as it is and I cba.

Sparklingbrook · 06/08/2018 19:48

I have not been snidey Nicknacky. Confused I asked the OP what the mistake was but they have not elaborated. Of course not scanning it is one possibility.
They could have scanned it twice accidentally then accidentally removed both trying to correct it. Anything could have happened.

The OP just said they made an error.

Nicknacky · 06/08/2018 19:53

sparkling I'm referring to when you quoted me and said "I take it you have never worked in retail".

Why would you think that when I was correct?

MiamiLogic · 06/08/2018 23:40

The till won’t be down, the staff member won’t be in trouble, stock discrepancies are common and expected (hence why stock controllers exist). I’ve worked in retail for a long time. Consider this one of life’s little bonuses. Maybe put an extra quid into a charity box this week to pass good karma on.

ManyCrisps · 07/08/2018 00:24

God you people don’t live in the real world do you.

MarthaArthur · 07/08/2018 00:30

Mumsnet is ridiculous with this stuff. Normal people keep shtum about mistaken stuff not scanned all the time. Its not theft even slightly.

The op handed the item over with the intention of paying and was handed it back without scanning it. She didnt intentionally with hold the item therefore no theft was commited.

Also shop workers dont have to make up shortfall in a till thats not legal. And no shop assistant would be fired for a till being down a tiny ammount unless their till is always down.

MarthaArthur · 07/08/2018 00:33

It annoys me because i work in retail and this happens all the time in all shops its no big deal. We fucking hate do gooders who come back in to pay for things we forgot to scan as thats when we get a bollocking. Otherwise no one would ever know where the item went and the company would swallow the cost with no more words about it.

Etymology23 · 07/08/2018 00:34

What MiamiLogic said. ^^

Beeziekn33ze · 07/08/2018 01:49

'Naughty'? Nah, just a bit pathetic really.

Rebecca36 · 07/08/2018 01:56

Donate the cost of the sunscreen to a charity of your choice. Then forget about it and enjoy the sunshine!

Skiiltan · 07/08/2018 02:03

Did anyone work out what "kick my ankle" meant? Makes as much sense to me as "snapped and farted".

tessieandoz · 07/08/2018 02:10

OMG . I could not be bothered to read all the answers, The Shop assistant will not pay. It is an item not counted by the electronic stock counting system. It is still theft. I once " stole" a large sack of potatoes by the same error. I did not go back. I could not be bothered ; I had two small kiddies with me
.

Plural · 07/08/2018 02:10

@Skiiltan I think it means click my ankles
Like in cartoons when they jump in the air and click their heels in the air

Bibesia · 07/08/2018 02:32

It's not theft. You asked to buy x amount of goods, the shop assistant offered to sell them to you at y price. Whether or not this was the price the management intended is irrelevant, the employee made the offer to you and you seized it.

When you know the employee has made a mistake and undercharged you, it is unquestionably fraud.

Normal people keep shtum about mistaken stuff not scanned all the time. Its not theft even slightly.

It is theft, completely. And normal people don't rush out of the shop clicking their heels and shouting "YES" having committed theft.

Zinn · 07/08/2018 03:16

Legally, it is theft as much as if you put it in your handbag in the aisle. If you know that the cashier is making a mistake, then you have the fraudulent intent at the same time you are taking something away. That makes it theft. It’s not something to be proud of.

AcrossthePond55 · 07/08/2018 04:07

Well, I guess I'm really a dope then. I forgot to scan a tube of lip balm at the self service till. When I realized it was in my carrier I took it out and left it behind. It was an honest mistake by me and not caught by the person who keeps an eye on the self service tills. Since the clerk didn't catch the error, I guess by OP's rules I shoulda just kept it.

One is either a thief or one is honest and does not keep items they haven't paid for. The fact that it 'wasn't caught' or 'I had DC with me' or 'I was already home' or 'the clerk won't get in trouble' doesn't make one any less a thief, justify it though you may.

offupop · 07/08/2018 04:13

What's up with the dickheads saying she stole, will die from bad karma?

Fuck off! Get a life! I picture you all as my ex neighbour. Proper up her self twat.

HunnidBands · 07/08/2018 04:37

clearly very very naughty then

This with the crying-with-laughter face emoji suggests you are a child. This is what’s wrong with the bloody world today. Not so much what you did but your whole attitude towards it.

Griw the fuck up and stop feeling so entitled.

‘Naughty’. For fucks fucking sakes.

FiveShelties · 07/08/2018 05:31

It is fine not to go back and pay, as long as you would not want a refund if they had charged you twice. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling you would have complained about being charged twice.
