To run out the shop and kick my ankle?

toocool4cats · 06/08/2018 14:32

Because the person on the till made an error that resulted in me getting a bottle of sun cream for free. Am I naughty for not returning to pay and shouting YES as soon as the car door shut ?

I love one of these mistakes aswell OP, its happened to me a couple of times. Wpuld I buggery go back into the shop and tell them 😂. Ignore the pearl clutchers and the "my life is way to exiting to be bothered about a freebie" brigade.

ToDarnHot · 06/08/2018 15:16

Thb I would have only have mentioned it if I noticed before I left the shop. But that would me being too lazy and cba, rather than thinking I was sticking it to the man.

Maelstrop · 06/08/2018 15:17

You’re a thief. This makes you happy? Hmm

Sparklingbrook · 06/08/2018 15:19

If the till is short they can check CCTV if they want to. Don't know how much the value would have to be for that to be worthwhile though.

What wxactly was the cashier's error?

Nicknacky · 06/08/2018 15:22

The till don't be short. The shop will never be aware of the error.

ibblebibbledibble · 06/08/2018 15:27

Jesus Christ what a bunch of miseries on here!
I can guarantee the checkout person will not have to pay for the sun cream. Love the odd freebie!

PurpleTrilby · 06/08/2018 15:28

I was going to nick something, really cheap, just a small thing, from a shop once when I was really young. My dad caught me and I didn't think it was a big deal. He was furious and said something I think is worth repeating: FFS don't get caught for something small, if you're going to be a thief, makes sure it's worth the fucking risk of getting caught. That aside, I don't like thieving, I've had a version of it when I was briefly in a retail role and yes, I lost my fucking bonus which was an important element of my pay. The company did not absorb it, I did.

TheFishInThePot · 06/08/2018 15:28

I'd be chuffed too. But I don't get out much.

InfiniteVariety · 06/08/2018 15:32

PurpleTrilby I was with your dad as far as being furious, but the rest of what he said to you is appalling!

LunaAzul · 06/08/2018 15:34

I expected this to be a thread on purposefully injuring yourself outside a shop...

Oysterbabe · 06/08/2018 15:34

So you stole something. Erm..... well done?

Timeisslippingaway · 06/08/2018 15:34

The till will not be short because it obviously wasn't scanned or OP would have had to pay for it. They can check the cctv it really doesn't matter the error is with the cashier or perhaps the till if it didn't scan properly. They definitely will not try and track the OP down from cctv images 😂😂 and if they did there is nothing the could do about it. Het a grip people it's a bottle of Sun cream, there's a lot worse going on in the world!

DaisysStew · 06/08/2018 15:36

If it’s been missed during scanning then how will the till be short?

This has happened to me a few times OP, always during a big shop so I haven’t noticed until I got home and it never even crossed my mind to go back. The best was the £16 fresh cod fillets that the cashier didn’t scan, was even happier once I went to cook them and they were clearly off. But I’m obviously a horrible thief and deserve a lengthy sentence to show me the error of my rotten cod stealing ways Grin

”Tesco - yanbu
Local independent shop - yabu”

@arethereanyleftatall - are you labouring under the delusion that such losses in Tesco come out of their profits or shareholder dividends? Because they don’t.

Losses due to theft and shoplifting (accidental or deliberate) come under ‘shrinkage’ - and a percentage of the price of every item they sell is to cover shrinkage - so it is every other customer who isn’t bearing the cost, not Tesco or their shareholders.

I am an honest person, and if I find I have been undercharged, or something has accidentally not gone through the till, I go back and rectify the mistake - but it annoys me that a part of my shopping bill is covering the dishonesty of others.

What initially happened in the OP was an accident - but to my mind, when you realise that you haven’t paid for something, and think ‘yippee - my lucky day’ instead of ‘ I must go back and rectify this mistake’, that is, ethically if not legally, theft. It is dishonest.

amusedbush · 06/08/2018 15:45

AIBU to run out the shop and kick my ankle?

Do you mean "click my heels"?? ConfusedGrin

LampHat · 06/08/2018 15:55

Do you mean like in Simon and the Witch? Or is that something different?

FrogsAreMean · 06/08/2018 16:03

I can just imagine those calling OP a thief would be elbowing each other of the way to see her in the 'stocks' in the town square if they had their way. Grin

Only on mumsnet!

MiddlingMum · 06/08/2018 16:05

It's theft.

Either take it back or if you don't want to do that, give it to your local food bank. Ours has been appealing for suncream this summer.

Cismyass · 06/08/2018 16:22

So stealing has made you self harm OP? Are you quite alright?

thisismygaff · 06/08/2018 16:38

It's theft, I would go back and explain what's happened. It'll allow you to have peace of mind

KittyHawke80 · 06/08/2018 17:00

‘Simon and the Witch’! That’s what it’s from. I kept thinking ‘Gruey’ for some reason . . .

toocool4cats · 06/08/2018 17:12

😂 clearly very very naughty then and as for using the word ankle instead of heel that's unforgivable! Worse than the theft? Let's hope I don't get horrible sun burn as karma ...... because I'm keeping the amber solaire of course. Perhaps I should take a dictionary to the beach with me......

OP posts:
HarrietKettleWasHere · 06/08/2018 17:15

Well kicking your heel would also look rather odd. I don't know why you'd want to do that, either.

Sparklingbrook · 06/08/2018 17:24

The till don't be short. The shop will never be aware of the error.

I take it you have never worked in retail?

Nicknacky · 06/08/2018 17:29

sparkling I did ten years in retail. How would the fill be short if the item was never scanned?
