Husbands bought a hoover he knew I didn't like

Fully prepared to be told I'm BU, but need to hear opinions. My husband decided
We needed a new hoover today, he went off and a new top of the range cordless Dyson, to replace our old Dyson. I hate the old one and said to him I would never have bought a new one. He said he knew that.

Is it me, or is that really disrespectful Only a hoover I know, but I seem to compromise on everything we buy for the house, and he's just pissed me off.

Who cares about an appliance that gets used once a month?

Grim. Twice a day here. Hairy dog.

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/08/2018 10:06

If it's one of the newer ones they're actually ok; the older cheaper handhelds were unutterably useless but we've had the v8 absolute for about a year and it's been great. We do have a miele cat and dog too which we figured we'd use for deeper cleans and use the dyson for quick run rounds but tbh the miele gets used once in a blue moon as the dyson is decent.

So even though he's an arse I'd give it a shot as you might find it ok.

Another vote for the GTech, GeorgeIII. It was actually DP who reckoned it looked good, and I fancied a cordless, so we sort of agreed. We got the handheld and the upright as there was a deal on if you bought both.

It's so light it feels like playing with a toy, it's brilliant on carpet but the true revelation for me was how well it works on the laminate in the kitchen. I haven't swept the kitchen floor since we got it, it gets right into the corners, then I just run over it with a damp mop.

LakieLady · 06/08/2018 10:27

Missed point of thread: YANBU, he needs to hoover from here on in.

DinosApple · 06/08/2018 10:42

@ZebraOwl if you remember where you read the British English and Indian English article I'd be really interested. Mum came over in the 50s with her parents and it may jog some memories for her. I know my DGM used some American phrases (maybe from soldiers posted in WW2?).

annastasiabeaverhausen · 06/08/2018 11:20

I've got a Dyson handheld and it's shit. Works well with the boosty button down but then only lasts 6-7 minutes. Gets crap stuck in it too. Have put off upgrading it as I can't be bothered researching it.

I remember my mum's old Hoover. It was a red upright and you had to change the bag. She must've had it 15-20 years.

TheWernethWife · 06/08/2018 12:16

We have the GTech plus the handheld, love them.

Blimey, unless you've got a tiny house that's barely enough time to do one room. I've certainly managed 40 mins+ with GTech, which is about as much hoovering as I can tolerate in one go.

toomuchtooold · 06/08/2018 12:56

complaints that nobody cares about but will help people get to sleep because they are so boring

Are you joking me? With wall to wall scumbag boyfriends, troubled teens and intergenerational trauma on here, a chat about Hoovers is a welcome bit of light relief Grin

expatmigrant · 06/08/2018 13:30

I'm glad I'm not the only one who would never buy a Dyson again.

  1. because I don't rate them
  2. because I don't like Mr Dyson and his vote for Brexit.

I would either never use it, take it back, or make sure DH does all the dysonyng.

blueshoes · 06/08/2018 14:18

I knew it would be a dyson.

Dyson is designed by geeks for geeks. Far too clever useless for anyone who actually wants to do a good heavy duty vacuum with minimum faff.

annastasiabeaverhausen · 06/08/2018 14:30

I'm going to buy a new hoover tomorrow, you've all inspired me not a Dyson

frenchfancy · 06/08/2018 17:59

New vacuum cleaner arrived, I am very happy with it.

YANBU.

If you specifically said not to get a Dyson, that was not acceptable.

I was given a V7 as a gift from colleagues for my 40th (seriously!!!!!). It's fine for quick scoots around when I don't really want to vacuum. Don't think there's much point in anything but the max setting, which only lasts a few minutes. Lucky to live in an apartment! Handy for vacuuming car as well, except that my hand gets really tired because it's heavy and my hands are stumpy.

For actual proper cleaning, I have the Miele C2 cat and dog, thanks to recommendations on here. It's a really great machine.

Mydogmylife · 06/08/2018 18:24

Another vote here for the gtech (pet) and handheld

bubblyone · 06/08/2018 18:24

the compact C2, which is a nice size

bubblyone · 06/08/2018 18:26

Also hate that Dyson is a Brexiteer. Would never have spent my own money on one of his products. Think they're all wildly overpriced anyway.

Saidthesharktotheflyingfish · 06/08/2018 23:41

Doesnt the Gtech need emptying all the time? The dust container is tiny.

Mrsramsayscat · 07/08/2018 00:06

Well he's unreasonable, but I have the new Dyson cordless after having a shiitty and heavy early model, and I love it.

PickAChew · 07/08/2018 00:10

I guess the vacuuming is his job from now on.

GeorgeIII · 07/08/2018 02:37

Little Gtech carpet sweeper type has a little tray you just pull out and tip muck from. Bigger carpet sweeper type just lifts off so easy cleaned- depends how much dirt there is on the floors Hmm

Bibesia · 07/08/2018 03:15

OP, what's your DH's excuse for buying something he knows you'll hate?

Especially something as useless as a Dyson.

Saidthesharktotheflyingfish · 08/08/2018 08:03

The bigger one - is that the one with the dust holder in the base? If so, that's the one the in laws had. It sits unused now because of how often they had to empty it and they bought a Shark instead.

4seasons · 08/08/2018 09:06

I feel your pain ! This isn’t about the hoover is it ? It’s about a man who thinks he knows best and just buys what he wants irrespective of his partner’s wishes. I’ve been married to one of these for nearly 50 years . I once asked for an ice cream making machine as a Xmas present... knew which one I wanted and told him ( numerous times ) but he bought a totally different one that “ Which” recommended. It makes ok ice cream but is an ugly piece of kit ... nothing like the lovely sleek one I wanted. Another time I asked for a food processor for my birthday ... got given a camera !!! Because apparently I “ needed” one .... in other words , he wanted to use it. At this point I totally lost it .... threw it at him and used swear words I didn’t even know I knew !
He still does stuff like this now and then , but nowhere nearly as often. Speak loudly and clearly to him .. “ I don’t want this vacuum cleaner. I hate it. I told you I didn’t want it so why did you buy it ? I will not use it . You can do the vacuuming from now on. And from this time forward I insist on an equal day in what gets bought for OUR house !!” Feel free to add the odd swear word in their... eg. controlling arsehole, f**ing knowitall etc. See , I told you I knew some good phrases. So sick of men thinking they know everything and are in charge !!! Sorry for the rant but it brought back bad memories. 😄
