Irritating pronounciation

I have just seen the Tesco steak ad and wish that the woman talking would not use a glottal stop in the middle of words. Perhaps this is regional but it sounds very lazy.

English is made up of so many different languages that to use the ‘correct’ accent for each word would change the language entirely

How do you say Salt?
I say it as Solt to rhyme with Halt. Am I saying it wrong?
There is another word that when I say it people imitate me - I really don't know what I am doing wrong because I don't think I say it the way they say I am. - I won't say the word because I get upset at the mickey taking and it is a Film/Filum type of word (not Film/Filum but that sort of word) and it's not the sort of word I can avoid saying without appearingto be a twat.

Cyclingpast · 08/08/2018 21:49

Salt as in S or l t . I think! Not Solt.

Rinceoir · 08/08/2018 21:57

Salt rhymes with half in my accent.

Rinceoir · 08/08/2018 21:57

Halt. Not half.

MikeUniformMike · 08/08/2018 22:04

I'd say Halt as with the Hal like the Holl in Holly.

HopelessWithNumbers · 08/08/2018 22:25

Australian relatives; patio = pay-show Confused

longwayoff · 09/08/2018 07:47

Ate. Eg I ate my dinner. Ett or eight?

RoseWhiteTips · 09/08/2018 10:32

Ate. As in eight.

longwayoff · 09/08/2018 10:46

Ah. Ett I'm afraid.

liz70 · 09/08/2018 10:46

"Ate. Eg I ate my dinner. Ett or eight?"

"I ate my tea" as I say it sounds like,"Eye yett ma tee".

longwayoff · 09/08/2018 10:48

Love the pay show. Kath and Kim "I wanna be effluent mum, effluent".

liz70 · 09/08/2018 10:49

As I say it, fault has a short "o" cf knot. Also vault. Half has an ah sound cf park (non rhotic accent here).

SallySynonym · 09/08/2018 11:25

Interesting thread. My mum is a sang-widge eater. it's amazing how many times she can use the word sang-widge in any conversation. Makes my teeth itch.

DH has picked up a really annoying habit recently of "I went to go to..." No idea where that has come from but I'd love it to return from whence it came.

"I went to go to the shops the other day" or last night when he wanted to watch a film which I had already seen, "oh that's right, you went to go to the cinema with (friend), didn't you"

longwayoff · 09/08/2018 11:39

And, on Jeremy Kyle, Blush textses. Not texts "I've saved all his textses"

AnExcellentUsername · 09/08/2018 15:12

"Texes" does my fucking head in.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 09/08/2018 15:15

HTH

How do you pronounce Lancaster?

I'm a southern RP speaker and say Lan-CASS-ter, whereas DH, a northerner who has lived in the south for all his adult life says Lan-CAR-ster, which is a bit ironic

iklboo · 09/08/2018 15:49

pronounce = pronunciation HTH

Probably. It was mentioned ages ago. Like, the second post.

flowery · 09/08/2018 17:53

”I'm a southern RP speaker and say Lan-CASS-ter”

Yes I do too

longwayoff · 09/08/2018 18:01

Me too, another southerner whose sister moved there many years ago and trained me to say Lan cass ter not lanc us ter.

JacquesHammer · 09/08/2018 18:03

I’m from Yorkshire and say Lan-CASS-ter (when I have to of course, we try to avoid talking about it Wink)

RoseWhiteTips · 09/08/2018 21:02

I care not how “posh” someone’s husband is, the letter l is not pronounced in ALMOND.

whiskeysourpuss · 09/08/2018 21:12

*There is a village near me called Torpenhow.

The phonetical pronunciation is
Truh-pennuh.

Hows that for mind blown? Lol*

We have a place called Kilconquhar pronounced Kin-uh-ch-er with the ch pronounced the same as the ch in loch

SequinsOnEverything · 09/08/2018 21:27

My mind is blown by the fact that there are actually people who say pam tree and lip bam!

I have never ever heard anyone say armond or any other variation that doesn't include an L sound.

In almond, palm, balm, alm I say an L sound, but it's quite a soft L. I can't figure out how to type my pronunciation, maybe parlm? But that's not quite right either 🤔
