Irritating pronounciation

I have just seen the Tesco steak ad and wish that the woman talking would not use a glottal stop in the middle of words. Perhaps this is regional but it sounds very lazy.

OP posts:
SisterNotCisTerf · 05/08/2018 00:38

it’s pronounced bloody bastard “aRmond”

😂😂😂 in my accent that sounds absolutely fucking ridiculous.

Greenyogagirl · 05/08/2018 00:38

Just watched it, you should change the title to ‘accents I find irritating’

CherryPavlova · 05/08/2018 00:38

Ar mond
BA gette
Ev el Lyn

Eemamc · 05/08/2018 00:38

so you say pam tree rather than parm tree? Eh?!

Greenyogagirl · 05/08/2018 00:40

I can’t say AR mond without sounding like a pirate. Did the pronunciation of baguette get answered?

IAmInsignificunt · 05/08/2018 00:40

The one that irritates me is “ibuprofen”.

daisyinatree · 05/08/2018 00:40

@cherrypavlova

Bar locks

Eemamc · 05/08/2018 00:40

Pam tree?
Lip bam?
Ams for the poor?
Surely not?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 05/08/2018 00:42

I do love a pronunciation thread, always results in a big debacle
I like when the proper linguists turn up with actual explanations as opposed to I think therefore it is

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/08/2018 00:42

so you say pam tree rather than parm tree? Eh?!

Exactly - do you see an R anwhere?

SisterNotCisTerf · 05/08/2018 00:42

Pam tree and lip bam- yes. Can’t say I ever say the word “alms” so not sure how I say it naturally. I certainly wouldn’t be giving arms to the poor that’s for sure. Grin

Greenyogagirl · 05/08/2018 00:42

Almond fits in with palm, balm and alms, their all have an ar sound, the l is not pronounced. It really winds me up.
Like Tough, Cough, Through all sound the same and scone is pronounce like Bone and Gone of course 🤔

Foggymist · 05/08/2018 00:44

Parm tree? Like a farm tree? Parm and palm are completely different in my Irish accent.

I love these accent wars where people refuse to accept others legitimate pronunciations Grin The long A/random additional R substitution in my favourite Smile

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 05/08/2018 00:45

I assume at some point someone will mention croissants, and once again I will utterly baffled that there is any other way of pronouncing 'croissant.'

The 'stabby' and 'rage' bits I don't get though. 'Mildly piqued' is about as far as I go.

Foggymist · 05/08/2018 00:46

*is my favourite, goddammit we need an edit function here.

Eemamc · 05/08/2018 00:46

Daisyinatree
Bshizzle films make pronunciation videos, but it is clear this is for American English if you have a look at the channel. I think this thread is talking about English...from the UK

HamsterToast · 05/08/2018 00:47

Not seen the ad, but the glottal stop is very northern, common in Newcastle etc.

SisterNotCisTerf · 05/08/2018 00:47

The one that irritates me is “ibuprofen”.

How do you say it? And what is the “wrong” pronunciation?

Greenyogagirl · 05/08/2018 00:47

Cwas-Ont although as I’m not French and Siri doesn’t understand me I’m happy to blame my accent Grin

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 05/08/2018 00:49

Eye buh profen

Eemamc · 05/08/2018 00:49

Irish pronunciation is different, that’s fair enough...
There are almshouses right near where I grew up so I said it a lot I suppose.... always pronounced ARmshouses

HamsterToast · 05/08/2018 00:50

Just seen it's the Sarah Millican advert- she's geordie. As a geordie I say leave our glottal stops alone ye ragjie.

Greenyogagirl · 05/08/2018 00:51

I - byou - profen, I know a lot of people in Lincolnshire who can’t prounce the you sound, so they say ‘com poo ter’ and in Leicestershire they change the ee sound to eh and drop or change as many letters possible. Am fillin appeh with this thread, love accents!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 05/08/2018 00:51

Alms houses as in poor relief?
amms houses. No r soft mm

hotfroth · 05/08/2018 00:52

What annoys me is when Americans pronounce Herbs as Urbs

Something to do with it coming from the French pronunciation instead of the English one I think.

Or perhaps it's Cockney Grin
