Irritating pronounciation

I have just seen the Tesco steak ad and wish that the woman talking would not use a glottal stop in the middle of words. Perhaps this is regional but it sounds very lazy.

Just watched it, you should change the title to ‘accents I find irritating’

I can’t say AR mond without sounding like a pirate. Did the pronunciation of baguette get answered?

The one that irritates me is “ibuprofen”.

I do love a pronunciation thread, always results in a big debacle
I like when the proper linguists turn up with actual explanations as opposed to I think therefore it is

Exactly - do you see an R anwhere?

SisterNotCisTerf · 05/08/2018 00:42

Pam tree and lip bam- yes. Can’t say I ever say the word “alms” so not sure how I say it naturally. I certainly wouldn’t be giving arms to the poor that’s for sure. Grin

Almond fits in with palm, balm and alms, their all have an ar sound, the l is not pronounced. It really winds me up.
Like Tough, Cough, Through all sound the same and scone is pronounce like Bone and Gone of course 🤔

Parm tree? Like a farm tree? Parm and palm are completely different in my Irish accent.

I love these accent wars where people refuse to accept others legitimate pronunciations Grin The long A/random additional R substitution in my favourite Smile

I assume at some point someone will mention croissants, and once again I will utterly baffled that there is any other way of pronouncing 'croissant.'

The 'stabby' and 'rage' bits I don't get though. 'Mildly piqued' is about as far as I go.

Bshizzle films make pronunciation videos, but it is clear this is for American English if you have a look at the channel. I think this thread is talking about English...from the UK

Not seen the ad, but the glottal stop is very northern, common in Newcastle etc.

SisterNotCisTerf · 05/08/2018 00:47

The one that irritates me is “ibuprofen”.

How do you say it? And what is the “wrong” pronunciation?

Cwas-Ont although as I’m not French and Siri doesn’t understand me I’m happy to blame my accent Grin

There are almshouses right near where I grew up so I said it a lot I suppose.... always pronounced ARmshouses

Just seen it's the Sarah Millican advert- she's geordie. As a geordie I say leave our glottal stops alone ye ragjie.

What annoys me is when Americans pronounce Herbs as Urbs

Something to do with it coming from the French pronunciation instead of the English one I think.

Or perhaps it's Cockney Grin
