Irritating pronounciation

I have just seen the Tesco steak ad and wish that the woman talking would not use a glottal stop in the middle of words. Perhaps this is regional but it sounds very lazy.

(And so is describing it as a long ‘a’ sound! 😳)

SisterNotCisTerf · 07/08/2018 14:11

Awe and crawl would be the same sound as the word “all” (look at all these people) definitely not a short “ah” sound.

Calf would be the same as bath.

I’ve realised that my “ar” autocorrected to “at” which has caused confusion.

What I meant to say was

in my accent the “a” sound in aw is the same as the “a” in ar. The “a” sound in ah is different to both aw and ar.

I'm always surprised by the way my friend (Scottish) doesn't rhyme walk/pork/fork/torque.

I can understand the rhotic accent making walk/talk sound different from the others, but she wouldn't use the vowel sound I have — hers would sound closer to how I say "wok".

What I can't understand is how she has different sounds for the others, especially pork and fork!

I'm not sure there's any word where she uses the vowel sound I use in all of those.

I'm from Cheshire, so reasonably RP but my As fall somewhere between short and long — I sound southern to northerners and northern to southerners. It's so interesting!

AnExcellentUsername · 07/08/2018 14:31

Because pork is like "p-oh-rk" whereas "fork" is more like "f-aw-rk".

SisterNotCisTerf · 07/08/2018 14:35

Pork and fork are identical. As is torque. Walk is nothing like them.

AnExcellentUsername · 07/08/2018 14:36

Pork and fork aren't identical in my accent.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/08/2018 14:42

Can you say then the same if you try?

I just found that one interesting just because they're spelt the same. I suppose it could be because the 'p' and 'f' have your lips in different positions. What happens if you say "bork" or "vork"? Sorry to use you as a guinea pig — don't answer if you don't want to!

AnExcellentUsername · 07/08/2018 14:44

It sounds like I'm attempting a really bad posh RP accent... 😂

SisterNotCisTerf · 07/08/2018 14:46

What is your accent username?

liz70 · 07/08/2018 14:54

"Pork and fork are identical. As is torque. Walk is nothing like them"

All four words sound identical in my accent.

9amTrain · 07/08/2018 15:00

Pork fork and walk are pronounced the same here as well.

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/08/2018 15:02

talk/torque ... If I say torque, then as I get to the k sound, the tip of my tongue is just behind my teeth, when I say talk, tip of tongue is in the same place, but the bit of tongue just behind the tip is flattened against my top gums, so there's the faintest l sound in there. I can't really hear the difference but I can feel the difference.

SisterNotCisTerf · 07/08/2018 15:06

To make walk sound like fork it would have to be spelled “wark”.

Work is said like “Wurk”

flowery · 07/08/2018 15:14

Pork fork and walk all sound almost the same in my accent, however a slight hint of a 'w' creeps in before the k in walk (replacing the l).

NotBuiltForThisWorld · 07/08/2018 15:17

Have we had ve-ge-ta-ble? Might be technically correct but sounds demented to my ear. It's veg-table.

StripySocksAndDocs · 07/08/2018 15:21

AnExcellentUsername: Because pork is like "p-oh-rk" whereas "fork" is more like "f-aw-rk".

The way I'm reading that makes 'pork' sound like 'poke'.

liz70 · 07/08/2018 15:38

In my accent walk rhymes with fork, pork and torque, as I said earlier.
Work rhymes with lurk, dirk and perk.

liz70 · 07/08/2018 15:41

If you're going to argue the way English words are spelled to be an indication of how they "should" be pronounced, you might as well give up altogether.

No wrong way, no right way; just different accents.

Lonelycrab · 07/08/2018 15:51

Ex Mil pronounces Australia...

“Oar-strallia”

Who do you think you are? the bloody queen or something

StripySocksAndDocs · 07/08/2018 16:11

That's how my parents say it too @Lonelycrab: "Aw-stray-lee-uh"

Also "Shrowsbury" for Shrewsbury.

Weird things is I say "Oss-tray-lee-uh" and "Shroosbury", despite being brought up by them.

Flippetydip · 07/08/2018 16:16

Stacey Dooley on The Pets' Factor, which my daughter watches practically on a loop. For goodness sake woman, find some Ts from somewhere.

"Hang on, did you say bu-un Cat?" NO SHE DIDN'T YOU DAFT BINT - SHE SAID BUTTON WITH SOME TS IN THE MIDDLE. And breathe. I realise it's trivial.

iklboo · 07/08/2018 16:17

You honestly can't say 'X is spelled like Y so should be pronounced the same' otherwise you're buggered with all the 'ough' words

Through
Cough
Enough
Though
Thought

Etc Grin

Ihavenoideaatall · 07/08/2018 16:22

After scallops/scollops

How about aquatic/aquotic?

AnExcellentUsername · 07/08/2018 16:35

I didn't realise pronouncing pork and fork differently would be so controversial 😂 just trying to explain a bit since a pp said they couldn't understand how their friend managed to get two different sounds out of them...

StripySocksAndDocs · 07/08/2018 16:45

But do you say pork like poke @AnExcellentUsername?

Very important information. I cannot continue my day without knowing.
