Ikea just ruined my life (sofa drama)

Banging our heads against the wall with Ikea customer service. Bought a discontinued colour sofa from Ikea, all fully boxed and labelled as brand new, has been delivered today and has the wrong back so cannot be built. There was no way to view contents prior to purchase and it was not labelled as ex display or sold as seen but brand new!
Only option is apparently to arrange for it to be collected, which won’t be until next Saturday now due to work commitments. About two hours on the phone between myself and my husband and they’ve grudgingly agreed to refund the delivery charge on to gift card as a goodwill gesture.
This feels so shit, had cleared out two sofas this morning ready for this one, now going to be without a living room for the week while a giant sofa in bits sits there and then not even be back to square one when the refund arrives as we’ll have no sofa at all.
I know this is not exactly the absolute end of the world but have waited for years to get a sofa big enough for the family and now it’s the summer holidays and i’m left with 5 kids, no sofa and an unusable front room.
Am I being completely unreasonable expecting to buy a brand new sofa and to actually be able to use it??
I’d just like the correct part provided or a swap for the same sofa in any colour, i’m really not fussy. I feel like i’ve been duped into this mess as my brand new sofa is not fit for purpose and I really regret getting rid of our (very) old sofas, but had to to make space for the new one!
Can anyone give me hope or is this the best I can expect, I’m honestly gutted. 😩

It's a mistake, doesn't seem intentional. I don't see how you've been duped.

It really isn't the end of the world. It's not fit for purpose and they will refund you when you return it. It isn't their fault that can't be until next week. It was brand new, just had the wrong part put in.

I realise it must be really annoying, but surely once you have the refund you can then buy the new sofa.

The room isn't unusable, bring some chairs in, bean bags. We're hardly using our living room at the moment because of the weather.

itbemay · 04/08/2018 18:20

I’ve been without a sofa for 3 months! We got rid of old ones and redecorated and couldn’t find anything that fitted just right and that we liked! It’s been a nightmare but we’ve found one at last.... not from ikea, now 6 weeks delivery!! Bean bags and garden chairs have been fun and to be honest I’ve hardly used the front room at all!

NicoAndTheNiners · 04/08/2018 18:24

It would be nice if they offered you another sofa for the same price.

minxyone23 · 04/08/2018 18:26

I get your point but the room is literally full of sofa parts. The sofa is more or less the entire usable space otherwise I think i’d be feeling slightly more rational.

Is there nowhere to put those until next week?

Even so it really isn't the end of the world.

ILoveMyDressingGown · 04/08/2018 18:50

It's annoying but unfortunately it's one of those things.

When our settee was delivered they couldn't fit the bloody thing in through our stupidly narrow doors. We couldn't get it in through the window because one it was split into 5 smaller windows with 4 sashes.

We had to take the bit that wouldn't fit (the settee was in 3 pieces and it was the corner bit that was too big) to my sister's and keep it in her living room for a fortnight.

We had to get someone to take out the whole window frame, which was screwed in from underneath and then sealed in with the pebble-dashing that goes right up to it.

We ended up having to pay £400 for a new window (this time with just one sash and a large pane of glass in the middle that'd be easy to take in and out should we buy anything else that doesn't fit in the door) and hire a van to bring the corner piece back to ours. It was in one long stress-fest and felt like the end of the world at the time but is just a comical story now.

Have a Brew or a Gin and some Cake and just shrug and live with it for a bit. There's not a lot else you can do.

Jaxhog · 04/08/2018 18:53

It's one of those (really annoying) things. But they should give you a full refund on the delivery charge too, surely? Not just a gift card! Why should you pay a delivery charge for something you can't use, due to THEIR error?

NotAgainYoda · 04/08/2018 18:55

I see your sofa farago and raise you 8 weeks without a dishwasher because it broke down (for the 6th time) over Christmas. Their customer service is woeful.

I wouldn't buy electrical goods from them because they are very keen to try and get out of their statutory duties under The Sale Of Good Act (which makes me sound like some elbow-patch-cardigan wearing bloke who reads Which)

WeirdCatLady · 04/08/2018 18:56

I feel your pain. We were due a delivery of new bed and other furniture yesterday. 11-3 delivery. At 3 I contacted ikea only to be told’...oh...one item was out of stock so they cancelled the whole delivery. We will deliver again next Friday.’

No one told us the delivery had been cancelled. No apology. Over a week now without a bed. No discussion of a refund or compensation until the stuff is eventually delivered (presumably in case they cock it up AGAIN)

strawberrysweets · 04/08/2018 19:25

You are entitled to a refund of your money not just a gift card surely?!?!

itbemay · 04/08/2018 19:44

@notagainyoda our ikea dishwasher, 4 months old has broken twice! Waaahhhh awful repair service, had to pay £20 in end for a sat call out as can’t take time off for an all day mon-fri slot

ShimmeringIce · 04/08/2018 20:00

They were crap delivering wardrobes for us last year too. On one of the many planned delivery dates I was told it was on lorry no. 7 at 8:30 in the morning, then when it didn’t turn up around lunchtime, that it had been cancelled a week ago!

Skapunkprincess · 04/08/2018 20:12

Hi OP. pm me which Ikea this relates to I may be able to help.

minxyone23 · 04/08/2018 22:57

Right, I’m back from the Ikea I bought the sofa from just checking in case they had another part they could swap over, but no luck. They were as helpful as they could be though and apologetic and understanding unlike the customer service line I dealt with earlier.
I do see the point of view of the rational folk who’ve commented and no it’s not the end of the world granted, but i’m truly gutted as getting this sofa was one of those ‘things are getting better’ moments and now I feel pretty stupid and defeated.
Have looked online tonight and am now really confused as the exact sofa I bought is still for sale, same colour, fabric name and product code and available for delivery from 8th August, only difference is this is £895 not the £650 I paid.
I think i’ve lost the battle on this one, but just can’t really see why they couldn’t just exchange it?
