We are expecting our first DD in October. There is a name I really like, however everyone I have ever met with this name has come from a specific country which myself and OH have no connection to. I love the name but I don’t know if DD will have to keep explaining her name growing up. Should I go with it or pick something else?

It's a bit like people who get a Chinese tattoo having never been to China.

I'd stick with names from your own culture.

Condragulations · 03/08/2018 10:02

Makes me think of the drag queen Yara Sofia but I don’t think anyone else’s mind would go there lol

It’s a lovely name and definitely not too out there to use.

AND I happen to love Yara Sofia Grin

GreenMeerkat · 03/08/2018 10:04

@blackteasplease Is it Sophia? Sorry I see posts like that and have to have a guess!

DarklyDreamingDexter · 03/08/2018 10:16

There will probably be quite a few little Yaras running around of your daughter's age when she gets to school - thanks to GOT's popularity. You won't get anyone asking about why you picked a name from a different culture, they'll just assume you binged on the boxset while pregnant!

JaceLancs · 03/08/2018 10:17

I wanted both my DC to have French/English names as my Dad is French, he wanted me to be called Madeleine but DM objected - pity as I don’t like my name that much and it’s very common in my age group!
DS would have been Joel and DD Elise
Ex DH objected and we compromised on an Irish name for DD (no Irish on either side of family) but I now love it and more important so does she
DS got a traditional English name (although originally Greek origin) fortunately it hopefully won’t date him

JaceLancs · 03/08/2018 10:18

Yara is lovely by the way!

MariaMadita · 03/08/2018 10:19

Yara is also a form of Irene (according to every German baby name website...).

DGRossetti · 03/08/2018 10:23

No one "owns" a name surely ?

MissusGeneHunt · 03/08/2018 10:29

Never watched GoT (I know, I'm a hermit) but the name Yara is pretty.

My name is Portuguese, not an ounce of Portuguese in me. The shortened version of my name is traditionally Russian - again, not a Russian cell within my bones. Love them both, and couldn't give a flying feck what people think.

Name your child as you wish (bearing in mind any repercussions!).

Bluntness100 · 03/08/2018 10:29

Well as long as it's not queen yara you'll be fine.

I think the worst that can happen is loads of folks assume you're a mad game of thrones fan. But that will fade away eventually.

I guess it's a bit like calling your son spock.

Only kidding, the name is fine.

RubaDubMum89 · 03/08/2018 10:35

You may see an Indian girl named Chloe in the UK but you wouldn't see any Indian girls named Chloe in India, would you?

My friends husband is Indian was born and raised there, with Indian parents etc and is called Gladwyn...

Condragulations · 03/08/2018 10:36

Oh should also say my first son’s name is Irish and my second is Welsh and we are Portuguese/English parents who dgaf Grin go for it

YAAASSS QUEEN!!! I thought I'd be the only one Grin

blackteasplease · 03/08/2018 10:48

Oh no it's Francesca @GreenMeerkat

I do like it but as I have an English surname I think some people will think it's try hard!

blackteasplease · 03/08/2018 10:49

Just seen @Davros got it in one!

blackteasplease · 03/08/2018 10:55

Yara in GoT books is called Asha, which is also nice!

TightropeWalk · 03/08/2018 11:06

Yara is on our list! I got it from an Australian account on Instagram and it never occurred to me it was not from our culture?! (What even is 'our culture' these days anyway?) I would not have hesitated to use it. It's really pretty and easy to say/spell/pronounce.

Maelstrop · 03/08/2018 11:30

My parents gave me a non English name. It’s been a complete pita my whole life, everyone asks if I’m a certain nationality or my parents are. Drives me a bit nuts, tbh.

To give my baby a name from another culture.
Winterbella · 03/08/2018 11:38

Yara, I think will end up popular because of GoT, Ayra has already been in the popular names lists since the series was made. I don't think anyone will question they will just assume your a GoT fan and that's where you got it from, to be honest I'd never heard of it before then and actually thought it was a made up name by the author as so many of the others are.

foxtiger · 03/08/2018 11:44

Wow, I had no idea that was a Portuguese name - I've never seen Game of Thrones, but the only similar name I've heard is Yaara (probably pronounced the same) which belongs to an Israeli woman I've met. The only Portuguese person I know is called Ayesha which I would have associated with a completely different nationality!

I kind of like it, and it must be pretty rare, so unless you live in an area with an unusually big Portuguese community, I don't think anyone will make that connection. They'll just think it's a pretty, unusual name.

(When you said 4 letters I thought it was going to be Olga, which is not nearly as pretty as Yara!)

AhoyDelBoy · 03/08/2018 11:54

@MrsEricBana
Ohhh I love Astrid! I might add that to my list if I ever have DD2. Why didn’t you use it?

I didn't make the GoT connection, I thought Yara Sofia the drag queen as well! Don't mind the name but I'd be more bothered by people making connections with TV shows than a specific country I think!

MrsEricBana · 03/08/2018 16:11

@AhoyDelBoy
I think it was just the fact that we have no Scandinavian connection, but it wouldn't have mattered. It's gorgeous isn't it (I also like Alba. Didn't use that either 😂)
