We are expecting our first DD in October. There is a name I really like, however everyone I have ever met with this name has come from a specific country which myself and OH have no connection to. I love the name but I don’t know if DD will have to keep explaining her name growing up. Should I go with it or pick something else?

Fair point ShirleyPhallus (great username)

I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at a white girl called Priya either tbh.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/08/2018 18:58

Not advisable if you happen to have a noun for a surname (particularly one that could be perceived as negative).

BubbleMix Jr: "Hello, I'm calling about the job you advertised."
Potential Employer: "Could I take your name, please?"
BM Jr: "Yara Pratt"
PE: "How very very dare you - don't waste your time applying, then!"

GreenMeerkat · 02/08/2018 18:59

I think it's a lovely name. People use names from all over these days so it's not that uncommon to have a name from a different country/culture.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/08/2018 18:59

Arya is popular because of GoT. People will presume you're a fan. I think Arya will date badly when GoT dies down.

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Deadly serious. Wanker is a surname in parts of the US (obviously it doesn’t have the same connotations) and my Mum cracked up laughing at the thought of some poor soul being lumbered with the name “Randy Wanker” Grin how I wish she was still alive so I could tell her his sister might be “Yara Wanker” Grin

Sorry OP! I still think Yara is a gorgeous name!

NotBuiltForThisWorld · 02/08/2018 19:02

Yara Sophia is a beautiful famous drag queen who was on RuPauls Drag Race TV show Grin I think s/he was Latin American but if I hadn't seen the show I would probably just think Yara was a little unusual but not tied to a particular culture.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/08/2018 19:04

Ciccabella Annunciata Ramsbottom has a certain ring to it.

YaLoVeras · 02/08/2018 19:05

Is that a name from GOT then?

I like Tara so if you give me five minutes I'll probably like Yara too.

Ooh, ooh, I can feel a Mumsnet Classic coming on....

YeTalkShiteHen · 02/08/2018 19:09

Haha I’ve never been part of a Classics before (despite being around for a few years under different names!)

It created much hilarity at the time, mostly because my mum was the most buttoned up, prim and proper Presbyterian you could ever meet! But my word she lost it that day, she spat her tea out and everything! Grin

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 02/08/2018 19:09

The poster was saying that there isn’t ANYTHING wrong with it and it wouldn’t raise eyebrows at all

True, but that's not the point. Using 'black girl named Elizabeth' as an example of being 'fine' - the other example was an Indian girl named Chloe - has been rightly queried by several posters.

YeTalkShiteHen · 02/08/2018 19:11

I went to college with a Sri Lankan girl called Yvonne.

YaLoVeras · 02/08/2018 19:11

Roisin Ingle who nobody would have heard of in the UK but she's a z lister in Ireland called her white daughter Priya and gave the other twin an Irish name I think.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 02/08/2018 19:11

I like Tara so if you give me five minutes I'll probably like Yara too

Grin

I like Zara, Tara and Lara more than Yara.

YaLoVeras · 02/08/2018 19:12

True. Me too!

DonttouchthatLarry · 02/08/2018 19:12

I like it OP - different without being too 'out there'.

Summerisdone · 02/08/2018 19:17

My name isn't unusual, but still not a name you hear all that often in UK, especially as I was growing up (I've actually heard of a couple under 5's called it recently). I have lost count of the amount of times I've been asked if I was Italian when people hear my name, especially as I have very dark hair. Personally I've never found it irritating to be asked and I've never had anybody ask why I'd be named something that typically is Italian if I have absolutely no connection to the country.
A few people have chuckled about me being English with an Italian forename and Irish surname, but that's it.

Actually, I don't think it ever officially made it into Classics - but a Classic by any other name.... !!

Leesa65 · 02/08/2018 19:20

Yara is fine .

Unusual, but fine.

YeTalkShiteHen · 02/08/2018 19:21

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll there is that Smile I do love your username although I’m now singing in my head

Leesa65 · 02/08/2018 19:21

Summierisdone

Is it Lucia ?

KoolAidPickle · 02/08/2018 19:22

The poster was saying that there isn’t ANYTHING wrong with it and it wouldn’t raise eyebrows at all

yes but the fact they think that would need saying implies that there could be something weird about it

Rufus27 · 02/08/2018 19:22

Think you’re over thinking this, OP. I have a foreign name and have never been asked where I am from. People just assume my parents liked the name. No big deal.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 02/08/2018 19:22

Yara will be fine - all the GoT names are well known, so it won't be seen as unusual.

CaptainCabinets · 02/08/2018 19:30

What an anticlimax 😂

If ever I met a British Yara, I wouldn’t bat an eyelid.
