To give my baby a name from another culture.

We are expecting our first DD in October. There is a name I really like, however everyone I have ever met with this name has come from a specific country which myself and OH have no connection to. I love the name but I don’t know if DD will have to keep explaining her name growing up. Should I go with it or pick something else?

I hate these threads when the OP doesn't give the name! Eurgh so annoying!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/08/2018 18:31

Just say the name eh?

XiCi · 02/08/2018 18:35

It's impossible to comment at all without knowing the name

BubbleMix · 02/08/2018 18:39

The name is Yara.

Ok. Yara. Well if you like it then go for it. Not keen personally. I love Amara though.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/08/2018 18:43

@RubyFlint

You beat me to it!

If the parents live in, or have strong connections with, Surrey, then Balonz (or possibly Balonzina for a girl) is completely fine (if anything, getting a bit too common there now) and absolutely nobody will think anything it - but if they live anywhere else (e.g. Slough or Bromley), it would without a doubt be considered gross cultural appropriation.

KoolAidPickle · 02/08/2018 18:43

Yara? So the "other culture" is that of Game of Thrones?

kenandbarbie · 02/08/2018 18:44

Where is Yara from? I've never heard it before?

beepbeeprichie · 02/08/2018 18:45

Yara... is that not a Game of Thrones name rather than anything else these days?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/08/2018 18:45

Well, Xara and Zara are both known names, so it's a happy middle ground. It just sounds a bit like a model of a car to me, though.

needyourlovingtouch · 02/08/2018 18:46

Yara isn't a name that brings any specific countries or cultures to mind. Go for it

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/08/2018 18:46

My Danish SiL is a Jara. Pronounced Yara. Love it.

needyourlovingtouch · 02/08/2018 18:46

Prefer Zara though

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/08/2018 18:47

Games of the thrones? I wouldn't choose it in that case.

BubbleMix · 02/08/2018 18:48

I’ve never seen game of thrones so I wouldn’t know. I would never think of it as another culture Confused. I’ve taught quite a few little girls from Portugal with the name.

It also stands for “Yet Another Ridiculous Acronym“ and is something to do with malware detection. You learn something every day! Smile

MrSpock · 02/08/2018 18:48

Yara is fine.

hungryhippie · 02/08/2018 18:49

I think it sounds lovely OP.
I dont watch Game of Thrones though so I dont associate it with that.

tillytoodles1 · 02/08/2018 18:49

A friend of a friend called her baby Arya, after a GOT character.

BubbleMix · 02/08/2018 18:49

@GreatDuckCookery I like the name Amira but then it would be the same question again.

OP posts:
YeTalkShiteHen · 02/08/2018 18:51

I like Yara, it’s a pretty name.

Why wouldn’t a black girl be called Elizabeth? Or an Indian girl be Chloe? What an odd statement to make.

ShirleyPhallus · 02/08/2018 18:51

A black girl named Elizabeth?

What’s weird about that?

The poster was saying that there isn’t ANYTHING wrong with it and it wouldn’t raise eyebrows at all

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/08/2018 18:53

It doesn't matter OP. Call her what you want to. I just prefer Amara to Yara.

Writersblock2 · 02/08/2018 18:57

I’d be really hacked off if I had a name many people would associate with popular TV, particularly with its anti-women messages.

strawberrry · 02/08/2018 18:57

It sounds like a twist on Zara to me, i wouldn't immediately think it was a foreign name.
