Is food suddenly loads more expensive? Why?

Ok. Panicking if it continues.
Just been to the local shop for tinned tuna and couldnt get it below 2 pounds. Corned beef 2. 50.
These were once cheap options for sandwiches. Now i see them as protein to be saved for an evening meal, and for sandwiches to be made from paste, marmite, soft cheese etc.
I have noticed my usual bread rolls go from 90p to 1.10.
Milk stayed the same. Squash much more money.
Is it just me? Yes i could have gone to aldi and not the corner shop but even so.
I honestly dont see how places like tesco are going to stay open if this continues, nor how anyone could afford to fill a trolley for the weeks shop.
Is it just me or is food becoming too expensive? Thats before tv license, water, petrol getting dearer each year.
How are we supposed to manage when wages dont rise at the rate of inflation?

I can do it, by spending money @serbska

I love gardening. Vegetables and flowers. Would do it all day if I could. My general point was that some people can’t and I’d rather empathise and understand why instead of throwing solutions at them which may be out of their reach.

cloudtree · 06/08/2018 17:40

Some people are solution focussed. I know I am. I am naturally inclined to make suggestions to resolve a problem rather than outwardly 'empathise'.

If I didn't empathise though I wouldn't feel inclined to offer suggestions in the first place. I would just ignore.

bellinisurge · 06/08/2018 17:41

@Believeitornot obviously growing your own isn't the solution . It isn't realistic. Brexit is also an unrealistic nonsense. I'm sorry that people voted for it. I'm also sorry we've had a patchy harvest this year.

Kemer2018 · 06/08/2018 17:46

Corned beef was cheap years ago. No longer.
Change what you buy. I dont buy much fresh fruit now. It's so dear. I buy frozen and canned. No tuna as too dear.
I live off eggs, chicken drumsticks, mince, cheese, lentils, wholemeal pitta, crumpets, own sauces. We get loads of heavily reduced stuff and freeze it.
It's a case of being forced to adapt Sad

I know I can plan and do stuff and grow veg but what’s peeing me off is the cheery leavers saying grow some veg and make do and mend...

Believeitornot · 06/08/2018 19:31

The reason for empathising is that you can then find a solution that works. There’s nothing more annoying than people, who mean well, make suggestions which they think works without actually listening to what the problem is first. That’s where I am coming from.

As for Brexit. It’s shit. It’s a stupid idea which is being pushed by those who want to get rich eg Jacob rees Mogg playing the money markets, Russians looking to expand their empire etc etc.

bellinisurge · 06/08/2018 20:19

@CrabappleBiscuit I'm not a cheery leaver. I am, in fact, the exact opposite. I am a prepper and therefore encourage people to grow a bit of their own and to be prepared to make do and mend because it's better than feckin ' nothing.

cloudtree · 06/08/2018 20:58

I’m the very furthest from being a cheery leaver.

cloudtree · 06/08/2018 21:03

And you can empathise all you like but I doubt there are any magic solutions. By all means suggest some though.

Believeitornot · 06/08/2018 21:40

I didn’t suggest there were magic solutions. But i wouldn’t be so arrogant to presume that I had the solutions and my suggestions would be right.

Those who can grow veg, I suspect they already do. Most people are sensible and have common sense. If they can’t, maybe there are other reasons and, therefore, other ways to help. I don’t know. That’s my point. I don’t know, not without digging deeper.
