Is food suddenly loads more expensive? Why?

Ok. Panicking if it continues.
Just been to the local shop for tinned tuna and couldnt get it below 2 pounds. Corned beef 2. 50.
These were once cheap options for sandwiches. Now i see them as protein to be saved for an evening meal, and for sandwiches to be made from paste, marmite, soft cheese etc.
I have noticed my usual bread rolls go from 90p to 1.10.
Milk stayed the same. Squash much more money.
Is it just me? Yes i could have gone to aldi and not the corner shop but even so.
I honestly dont see how places like tesco are going to stay open if this continues, nor how anyone could afford to fill a trolley for the weeks shop.
Is it just me or is food becoming too expensive? Thats before tv license, water, petrol getting dearer each year.
How are we supposed to manage when wages dont rise at the rate of inflation?

LookingforAdvice no offence but that's not really a great shopping list.

Tinned beans and sausages are not a good food. Neither are crisps or squash.

AjasLipstick · 04/08/2018 15:47

Vegetables dont make a meal though and won’t fill you up.

Erm...yes they do.

How do you think vegetarians and vegans get by? Confused

RomanyRoots · 04/08/2018 15:49

penny

I don't know as I don't do that. I have everyday to shop if I want so buy fresh from markets.
I think it would cost a lot more with delivery charges? I don't think the price makes any difference in supermarkets whatever time you shop.

Iscreamforbenandjerrys · 04/08/2018 15:55

I've recently discovered co-ops deals. Last week it was a big box with different types of breaded chicken. Not normally my sort of thing but good for throwing in the oven when dc goes to a club earlier than our dinner time. It came with a bad of onion rings, McCain fries, a bag of frozen corn on the cob and a 4 pack of magnum ice creams. £5.00 for the whole lot!

Lookingforadvice123 · 04/08/2018 20:11

Positivelyperf it's not Alpro, assuming it's an own brand. Perfectly nice though!

Lookingforadvice123 · 04/08/2018 20:13

Ajaslipstick just to point out that that's not my main shopping list, just added extras. And I'd love to say the crisps and beans are for my toddler, but they're for me. I'm in the first trimester suffering with horrific nausea/sickness and food aversions but crisps and beans are my safe foods right now! I normally eat salads daily!

But actually, had I bought veggies and fruit, it would've been even cheaper.

I don't really think there's all that much wrong with sugar free squash though...

PositivelyPERF · 04/08/2018 20:13

Thank you Lookingforadvice123. I’m going to try it.

Lookingforadvice123 · 04/08/2018 20:17

Ooh, and in that list I also got Lidl's own brand Lurpak (Danial). I knew I would keep remembering more!

Lookingforadvice123 · 04/08/2018 20:17

*Danpak

Horridhenry88 · 04/08/2018 20:20

Our local Loundis aand Budgens iare now a Coop and I find it much cheaper than Loundis. Really lovely sliced bread for 69p which used to be over a pound.
Obviously the big stores are cheaper but I love the Coop for a quick top up shop.

SherbrookeFosterer · 04/08/2018 20:25

OP: Never underestimate the power of pulses.

You can make your own hummus for sandwiches blitzing a tin of chickpeas, garlic & lemon. You don't need tahini. They are gorgeous and full of good stuff.

It never fails to put a smile on my face how much kids love hummus.

But pulses in general are brilliant for your health and your bank account.

Stay strong.

mydogisthebest · 04/08/2018 20:29

I agree that pulses are brilliant. So many meals you can make with them.

Chickpeas alone I use to make hummus, falafel, chickpea and spinach curry, chickpea and vegetable tagine, spicy chickpea pasties, chickpea burgers.

Brexit

Markets fears make them dump pounds against other currencies.

Petrol should be more expensive too since it's priced in dollars.

Silvertap · 04/08/2018 20:43

Its probably going to get worse.

We sold wheat at £138 per tonne only 8 weeks ago.

It reached £196 on Friday.

This drought is bigger than just the uk.

PositivelyPERF · 04/08/2018 20:56

Shit! 😲

LeftRightCentre · 04/08/2018 21:02

There's drought and a declining currency for a country that imports a lot of its food. For everyone saying that food is all so cheap here we have one of the highest costs of living in Europe.

I buy Wonky Veg in Morrison's pretty cheaply. I like fried potatoes but they can take a while to fy, costing power. My tip for that is to parboil them for 10 minutes and then fry or you can also slice them and put them in the slow cooker for a few hours or overnight and then fry them to crisp them up. My son likes fried potatoes with melted cheese and baked beans.

nannykatherine · 05/08/2018 00:28

Xenia i’ve read diaries of people written during the war and they write how weak and hungry they are on rations .. they also had infections and sores that wouldn’t heal because of deficiencies . could you really live on two meals ??

AjasLipstick · 05/08/2018 01:50

Re pulses being great...YES! I've been making various "bowls" as they pretentiously call them on Instagram and I made a lovely one the other day with fried chick peas, roasted sweet potato, olives, feta and broccoli. I put olive oil on top and DH had a bit of chilli sauce too. Gorgeous and very filling.

I know things like Feta aren't cheap but a bit of cheddar would be nice and you can vary things enormously.

Silvertap · 05/08/2018 06:18

Ajas do you have a recipe for that, it sounds delicious!

AjasLipstick · 05/08/2018 06:45

Silver well I just made it up after watching a video which I couldn't then find again! It was based on an Elote bowl though...and the one I originally watched was nicer than the one I made I think...there are loads of variations.

www.purplecarrot.com/plant-based-recipes/elote-bowl-with-lime-chickpeas-quinoa

Here's one. You don't need to add vegan mayo...I didn't. But you can add cilantro (I forget the English name for cilantro! but it's that stuff that goes on curries a lot...a green herb) and lemon or lime juice right at the end is also nice.

Use that recipe above as a basis and add your own bits and bobs.

Last year I was paying £45 a bale for hay, I have stocked up for the year at £60 a bale last Monday, Friday it was making £72 at auction.

The cost has a knock on effect to the farmers. They are sitting on their crops for their own animals, if they do have surplus towards the end of next winter, they will be selling at premium prices.

There will be farmers who don't have their own crops, I can see them having to sell their herd.

This is weather related.

Teacher22 · 05/08/2018 07:27

Apparently the doubling of the price of butter is due to a number of factors. Poor animal feed harvests meant a shortage of foodstuff for European animals and France, a huge consumer of butter, has suffered. Butter vendors will not put the price up for the home market so have been ramping up the prices for the UK where they can make hay.

Also China has started importing more and New Zealand had less to export last and this year.

I would not put it past the big supermarkets to choose some indispensable products on which to hike the prices to increase their narrowing margins.

You can beat price rises by savvy shopping and shopping around but you are never going to get a good price by last minute purchases at local stores. Convenience stores are well known for being a third more expensive than larger stores.

Believeitornot · 05/08/2018 08:33

How do you think vegetarians and vegans get by

Er with dairy and pulses ie a source of protein!!

Believeitornot · 05/08/2018 08:34

(Dairy for vegetarians only obviously).

Basically I’m challenging the idea that anyone can live off a few courgettes.

cloudtree · 05/08/2018 08:41

Nobody has said that any one can live off a few courgettes Hmm
