To ask how much your water bill is

someoneseatenmyapple · 02/08/2018 05:53

Had our water bill yesterday. Direct debit is massively different from what we should be paying. Rang Southern Water Yesterday and they think we should be paying £66 a month (10 months). We have been paying £15.

Partly my fault for glossing over the previous 2 bills (we only went on to a water metre a year and a half ago) but a bit bloody annoyed they have only just flagged this up with me. We now owe them just over £900.

So a new direct debit of £66 - which does not take into consideration the debit - the guy was waffling on about capped payments and if I wanted to I could leave the direct debit at £15 but it would take me longer to pay the debt off (why leaving the payment at £15 would put us into more debt?).

We are a family of 3 (2 adults, 1 teen).

Should I take this up with them again/OFWAT?

They say this is normal use age for a family of 3 and it's unlikely we have any leaks.

In Scotland we have a flat fee of £363 for the year

BlitheringIdiots · 02/08/2018 06:05

Our bills are 6 monthly and usually about £120 for water and £150 for sewerage. Household with 3 people

bichonbaby · 02/08/2018 06:08

£360 fixed price for the year for 3 bed house, 3 person family. That's in the Midlands

polkadotpixie · 02/08/2018 06:10

That seems super high to me! We pay £20/month and are slightly in credit

Severn Trent. 2 adults

lunamoths · 02/08/2018 06:13

We were paying £30.00 a month but ended up owing some to Severn Trent. Our bill is now £50.00 a month 2 adults 3 small DC

OrcinusOrca · 02/08/2018 06:14

Some companies are very expensive. Anglian water are cheap. We paid £33 a month on a metre for two adults and got reimbursed a bit when we moved. My Mum is with Anglian water for sewerage and someone else for water and never paid as little as we did.

outofmydepth45 · 02/08/2018 06:15

£50 a month here 2 Adults 2 under 5

HRTpatch · 02/08/2018 06:16

We pay £20 a month ( 2 adults) and that is spot on....we ended up last year about £25 in credit.
When there were 3 of us it was exactly the same.

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/08/2018 06:18

You need to keep on top of bills and not leave it to the water company. Realistically you must know that it's never going to be £15 a month unless you are away a lot, very careful with water or on rates for a very cheap house.

Eg I used to live in a back to back that was built without a bathroom and only had a tiny strip of yard so rateable value was very low. My water bill was £13 a month 15 years ago. It was a hell of a shock when I moved to a semi with a garden and my water bill trippled (both on rates not metered).

Once you have paid the debt off, it will go down, but keep an eye on it from now on to make sure you're paying for what you use and towards the debt.

Phillipa12 · 02/08/2018 06:27

We are metered and my average consumption a day is 266 litres, my bill is £35 a month and thats 1 adult and 3 dc. I am though very careful with water the dc only have a shallow bath and then that water gets thrown on the garden, i stick to 4 min showers etc, we are with wessex water.

FASH84 · 02/08/2018 06:28

Ours is just over £60 a month (10 months) for two adults, unmetered so that seems about right to me

FASH84 · 02/08/2018 06:31

You've got no grounds to go to ofwat you haven't managed your own bills, they've sent them to you, you could see your DD wasn't enough to cover your usage before now. YABU

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 02/08/2018 06:44

Our bill was £65 but they have capped it at £38 as we're a large family and receive a few benefits.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 02/08/2018 06:45

2 adults, 4 children.

theunsure · 02/08/2018 06:47

About £28 a month, we’ve been on a meter for a couple of years. Started off paying nearer £40 and now got it about right.

Only me and DH and both work full time so out of house a lot.

Jammysod · 02/08/2018 06:49

£68 a quarter in the North West with United Utilities, not on a meter. That's 2 adults & 1 child. Count myself lucky looking at some of the amounts paid

wendz86 · 02/08/2018 06:50

I was paying £25 a month but was £140
In credit which they paid back to me . Now paying £17 a month.

ShutUpBaz · 02/08/2018 06:52

£50 per month with Southern water. Two adults and two children.

And what FASH said.

CuppaSarah · 02/08/2018 06:53

We pay 20 a month. But should pay 30, but we built up hundreds of pounds of credit when we were on a meter last year. On the meter, we paid £60 a month for two adults, a preschooler and a baby. We had a terrible electric boiler that was so slow we only had shallow baths.

hammeringinmyhead · 02/08/2018 06:54

Ours is about £180 every 6 months for 2 adults. So £30 a month. You should have been able to see you weren't paying enough but they normally would have changed the DD before 18 months passed!

Kh13 · 02/08/2018 06:58

I pay 12 a month. 1 adult 1 child. Am in credit with them. (Water meter)

Osirus · 02/08/2018 07:34

We used to pay around £50 because we have a large house; we thought that was too much because there was only two of us.

After having a water meter for a while it went down to £30.

There’s now 3 of us (toddler!) and we are in credit by a huge amount, so only pay £3 a month!

adaline · 02/08/2018 07:36

£32 a month. Two adults and three animals!

MissusGeneHunt · 02/08/2018 07:40

Anglian Water, two adults, one teen, £37 pcm.

littleblackno · 02/08/2018 07:43

Water bills vary massively across the country. I'm in Devon and bills here are huge. Mine is approx £50- 60 per month. Me and 2 dcs, no excessive use. That also includes a discount the government has made to address the imbalance but it doesn't make a dent really.
