To ask how much your water bill is

Had our water bill yesterday. Direct debit is massively different from what we should be paying. Rang Southern Water Yesterday and they think we should be paying £66 a month (10 months). We have been paying £15.

Partly my fault for glossing over the previous 2 bills (we only went on to a water metre a year and a half ago) but a bit bloody annoyed they have only just flagged this up with me. We now owe them just over £900.

So a new direct debit of £66 - which does not take into consideration the debit - the guy was waffling on about capped payments and if I wanted to I could leave the direct debit at £15 but it would take me longer to pay the debt off (why leaving the payment at £15 would put us into more debt?).

We are a family of 3 (2 adults, 1 teen).

Should I take this up with them again/OFWAT?

They say this is normal use age for a family of 3 and it's unlikely we have any leaks.

Welsh water, works out about £20 a month for 2 adults and a toddler.

When we were with Southern Water though we were paying £35 a month for just the two of us, with my husband away for half the year, no dishwasher and washing machine on once a week. So £66 doesn't sound that unreasonable.

Armchairanarchist · 02/08/2018 13:09

Metred 3 bedroom semi. 2 adults 2DC, £65 a month. £650 per year we don't pay in Feb and March.

HermansHermit · 02/08/2018 13:10

I pay United Utilities about £26 a month, but there's no kids here and it's below average usage apparently. It's about half what I'd pay on the old rateable value system so I'm quite happy.

UU are robbing barstewards though.

mrsm43s · 02/08/2018 13:20

I'm in the South East, and we pay £450 per annum, unmetered.

Every time I've done a calculator to see if we'd be better off on a meter, it's come out at more for a metered supply. We're a family of 4, 2 adults, 2 teens, who all shower daily, wash the car infrequently, don't water the garden, always run the dishwasher full, and do lots of clothes washing every week. I'd consider us fairly average water consumers.

I would think £50-60 or so a month may well be fairly average for a family on a meter.

specialsubject · 02/08/2018 13:55

also depends where you are, you've no choice of supplier and they can charge what they like.

three minute showers, no running taps for washing veg or teeth, no car washing, no lawn watering. Sounds like you are doing all the right things, you've just built up a debt from a too-low payment. Sorry.

FASH84 · 03/08/2018 16:25

@Star21 we're Essex too, we pay just over £60 for both (separate companies) that's unmetered and there are two of us at the moment, but large three bed house. We were metered in our old flat and paid basically the same , I think paying separately for sewage and clean water makes it more expensive, two lots of built in admin fees etc

Kemer2018 · 03/08/2018 16:27

£16 per month for years. We're metered so I'm worried about how this weather will affect our bill.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 03/08/2018 16:31

Eight whole pounds a month. We are a family of five with three bathrooms, the washing machine is always on, and the dishwasher is.

I’ve never understood it. We are on a meter and it’s always been between eight and twelve a month since we’ve lived here (5 years now).

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 03/08/2018 16:34

I’m starting to think my £74 a month DD needs looking into... 😬

Two adults, two kids in my house.

TeenagersandFurbabies · 03/08/2018 16:58

£88 per month metered bill. Family of 4 that live in Devon. My last bill for Jan - July was £558.87 so I am still £44 in credit. For a proper comparison you need the cost per cubic metre. Mine is £1.84 for water and £3.42 for sewerage so each cubic metre of water used costs me £5.26.

whiskers72 · 02/09/2018 17:22

We are southern water and pay £72 for 2 adults and 2 Dc. I am dreading getting the next bill as we have had to use water for watering the garden this year.

Ninoo25 · 02/09/2018 17:44

Ours are £67 a month with United Utilities. Family of 4 on a meter. We do a lot of wash loads and use the dishwasher once a day (sometimes twice!) We all have a shower every day, sometimes 2 if we’ve been to the gym or swimming. All appliances we have are quite new and meant to be water saving. Shower is not a power shower either. It was a similar amount when we lived elsewhere, so I don’t think we have a leak

TroysMammy · 02/09/2018 17:49

My monthly water meter bill has gone up from £18 a month to £23 a month, 2 adults, no baths.

Damn the hot summer when my water butt ran dry and my vegetables and greenhouse needed watering. Saved on tomatoes and courgettes though.

hopelessbusiness · 02/09/2018 17:56

Wowsers. Cornwall resident here - £67 per month, me and 2 teenagers in a 3 bed end terrace. Can't have a meter due to shared supply - the £67 includes a discount to reflect this (although it's teeny tiny.)
South West water are notoriously expensive - everything is down here - but luckily we have the lowest wages in the country too, so it's all good ....

Violetposy · 02/09/2018 19:06

Check you don’t have a water leak. We had a water bill from Anglia for one quarter which was £700! It’s now gone down to £125 a quarter (2 adults and 1 teen.

oldfatandtired1 · 02/09/2018 19:12

£4 a month Smile . Just me, 2 bed cottage, on a meter. Septic tank so £30 - ish maintenance per annum on that.

4yearsnosleep · 02/09/2018 19:33

£30 a month here with Thames Valley, 4 bed house with 3 Lois, a bath and 2 showers. I bath most nights in the winter too

CuntyMcFuckerson · 02/09/2018 19:40

£291 a year.

No meter.

We're in a 4 bedrooms, 2 bathroom house, with the usual dishwasher and washing machine going every day.

£66 a month seems huge to me but as I'm not metered I don't know if actually that's how much mine would cost?

Jamieson90 · 02/09/2018 19:44

No metre, 2 bedroom apartment with just myself - washer once a week. With United Utilities.

I pay £145 year which I consider to be very cheap. In fact total utilities per month is £95.

JurassicGirl · 02/09/2018 19:47

£70 per month (10 months)

South West Water

2 adults & 3 dc 6-9 yrs

Eloisedublin123 · 02/09/2018 19:49

Free in Ireland 🙈

HeronLanyon · 02/09/2018 19:51

I calculated a meter would be cheaper so am in the switch over year still paying monthly and getting comparison figures each month. Have to switch after 12 months but can do so earlier. Trouble is my first comparison showed we had used around twice what I expected and we were AWAY for 3 of those weeks. Thanks op for reminding me I need to get to the bottom of this . . Think it’s outrageous by the way that we all pay such differing prices depending on which company we are with. Really wrong.

PattiStanger · 02/09/2018 19:51

Looking at the rates I can see that Southern water is about 50% more expensive than I pay but even so £66 a month seems high for only 3 people.

Have you got the bills that show your usage in m3?

theSnuffster · 02/09/2018 19:57

We pay £67 per month (over 10 months) unmetered.

Penners99 · 02/09/2018 20:28

£30 per month, not changed for the last 4 years
