To ask how much your water bill is

Had our water bill yesterday. Direct debit is massively different from what we should be paying. Rang Southern Water Yesterday and they think we should be paying £66 a month (10 months). We have been paying £15.

Partly my fault for glossing over the previous 2 bills (we only went on to a water metre a year and a half ago) but a bit bloody annoyed they have only just flagged this up with me. We now owe them just over £900.

So a new direct debit of £66 - which does not take into consideration the debit - the guy was waffling on about capped payments and if I wanted to I could leave the direct debit at £15 but it would take me longer to pay the debt off (why leaving the payment at £15 would put us into more debt?).

We are a family of 3 (2 adults, 1 teen).

Should I take this up with them again/OFWAT?

They say this is normal use age for a family of 3 and it's unlikely we have any leaks.

I'm reviving this thread as we just received our water bill for the first year in our new house.

It's £885 which surprised me.

It's a 3/4 bedroom house but large. Council tax band E. If thatt makes a difference.

Usually just me and DH here, with a DS who comes home from Uni now and again.

I suspect we may be better off on a meter, but once you have it you can't change back can you?

LakieLady · 16/02/2019 11:57

We're Southern Water, too, OP. We've been paying £28 a month for ages, and they want to put it up to £37.

Just 2 adults in the household.

Still, it could be worse. Parts of the S Water area have fresh water supplied by SE Water and waste water dealt with by Southern. Their bills are loads higher than ours.

WellGoshDarnIt · 16/02/2019 12:12

LakieLady - that's us!! £50 a month to the two companies. It's bloody extortionate, there's only three of us and we're really careful with water. In our previous house we had a meter and paid £28 pcm.

UbbesPonytail · 16/02/2019 12:18

No meter. £16 a month for I’ve, £23 a month for the other. Not sure which way round they are.

Jaxhog · 16/02/2019 12:23

£28 a month with Thames Water on a meter. Only 2 adults at home. We do have 2 water butts, so rarely use tap water in the garden unless it is very dry.

legolimb · 16/02/2019 12:43

There is such a range of prices.

We would likely be better off on a meter I think.

Hmm

NameChanger22 · 16/02/2019 12:48

I pay £200 a year, no meter. I think water should be at least this cheap, if not free. Water is a very basic human right.

Housingcraze · 16/02/2019 12:48

Meter 15.00 month
Sewage 38.00

Squickety · 16/02/2019 12:52

This is so weird I have just been discussing this with various neighbours as we all seem to be paying wildly varying amounts for a 2 person household in the same area...from 11.50 per month (and in credit) to 55 per month. We all moved in roughly the same time as they are new houses, no one thinks they have particularly high or low water usage. It seems really weird.

Raspberry10 · 16/02/2019 13:04

Same sized family here and on a water meter ours is £120 a quarter. However we had a water leak 2 years ago and it went to £700 a quarter, I nearly died!! Phone the water company and ask for the details of how to check for a leak. If it’s their side they pay, if it’s yours you do, but they will probably let you off the bill. Ours did, but it did cost us £1200 to fix it Shock

JaffacakesAreCakesNotBiscuits · 16/02/2019 13:08

60 pm. 2 adults 2 dc.

newuser2018 · 16/02/2019 13:17

@someoneseatenmyapple southern water started billing me £90 per month for 1 bed flat 2 adults and no garden. This was about five years ago.
Turned out we had a split supply and somehow were getting billed for 2 flats usage. I fought it for two years and had multiple engineers out to look into it. All agreed split supply. Still took all that time for the company to address the fact there was an issue and I never got so much as an apology. Shocking company. Now for a 2 bed house 2 adults and 1 child we pay £48 per month.

MostlyBoastly · 16/02/2019 13:18

Our yearly bill is £460.

whereiscaroline · 16/02/2019 15:40

Ours has just gone up to £40 a month from £32. 3 bed house. Average 2 showers or baths a day, one washing machine wash and one dishwasher run. Anglian Water.

Daisymay2 · 16/02/2019 15:49

Anglian water here as well. £42/month, 3 adults in term time plus one when ds2 home from Uni.
AW are supposed to be an expensive water company as well
