I have had premium bonds since they first came out,i have never won a penny, surely in all this time i should have won at least once
Are the older ones still in the draw,?
I have always updated change of addresses etc
I would like to buy more, but this is putting me off

How many have you got? The more you have, the higher your chances although to be honest, I only had 20quids worth in the 70's and 80's and won 2 or 3 £50 prizes.

sporadicrains · 31/07/2018 11:28

We were visiting distant relatives of DH's a while ago and the subject of premium bonds came up. I mentioned that I'd inherited my late DM's bonds for £500 and they were a lucky batch and she often won small amounts, and after her death, so did I. Gutted, I was, when I found out that you can only keep those numbers for a year after inheriting them.

"Oh yes, no point in just having a few," said distant elderly relative in a casual offhand way... "We've got twenty thousand and we win quite often".

chickenowner · 31/07/2018 11:30

I've recently bought £20,000 worth so am waiting to see if I win anything this month!

My Mum and partner both have large amounts and win £25 or £50 most months.

inlectorecumbit · 31/07/2018 12:15

I have £10,000 worth and DH £12,000 worth.
In 3 years l have won a total of £125 but l have lost count of how much DH has won--just £25 and £50 wins but they all add up

RoseDog · 31/07/2018 12:32

I have a grand total of £15 of premium bonds, my gran bought them for me for my first 3 birthdays. £5 a time. My mum told me I won £50 when I was about 2 and they were poor and she was able to afford winter clothes for me. Never won a thing since, never added to them and because my gran died when I was really young I never withdrew them!

HoHoHoHo · 31/07/2018 12:43

Yanbu but then I convinced myself I was going to win euromillions last week and am genuinely disappointed.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/07/2018 12:46

YABU. It's completely random, no such thing as a lucky batch and unless you have thousands, the chance of never winning anything is quite high. Read the moneysavingexpert analysis on them.

ReservoirDogs · 31/07/2018 12:47

when we had £100 worth we won nothing,

when we sold a property but put the proceeds up to the maximum each in PB until our next purchase we won loads (all smaller amounts but sometimes once a month and sometimes 2 or 3 times a month) which was much more cost effective than putting it into an account with low interest rates.

ReservoirDogs · 31/07/2018 12:47

Never the BIG one though!

hamburgers · 31/07/2018 12:57

Me too @HoHoHoHo (re euromillions 😂)

BrutusMcDogface · 31/07/2018 13:03

My partner and his family all have them. One of his siblings has won LOADS!

HaveSomeGrace · 31/07/2018 13:05

@HoHoHoHo

😂 How are you recovering from that disappointment?!

ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd · 31/07/2018 13:09

I have £40,000 and I win £25 every second month, on average. DD has £1,000 and wins £25 each month. She has luckier numbers than me. Grin

SusannahL · 31/07/2018 13:10

the older ones are still in the draw OP.

You said you always remember to let NS and I know when you move so that's good. I read once that there are masses of unclaimed prizes because people have moved house and forgotten to let them know.

huggybear · 31/07/2018 13:13

We all win pretty much every month but I agree you need 15k+

BMW6 · 31/07/2018 13:16

I invested 30k in PB for six months and won 150 in total. Luck of the draw.

glasserator · 31/07/2018 13:18

I had some bought for me when I was a baby. Who knows what’s happened to them!!

DonttouchthatLarry · 31/07/2018 13:19

We win most months but have a lot - it's better than ISA interest rates. It's like raffle tickets though - you'd expect someone with 50000 tickets in a draw to win more than someone with 1.

Whatsthisbear · 31/07/2018 13:26

@glasserator if you contact national savings and investments they can find them for you. I too had ones bought as a baby & after 45 years and several housemoves they still found them & now have them registered to my current address.

Never won a penny.

ToadOfSadness · 31/07/2018 13:27

You can check them online www.nsandi.com/premium-bonds, one of mine went missing in the post, and due to the frequency of wins I checked it and found I had won. It was fine though as they send a follow up if it isn't cashed. I do check them online now as it has happened twice since moving here, along with car insurance renewals and other things not arriving. Our postmen seem to have trouble working out which road they are delivering to.

I was getting them fairly often, first £50 which was the minimum and then they changed it to £25, but not so many now. I have had mine for many years.

Fe2O3Girl · 31/07/2018 13:30

YABU.

You would be better off putting the money in a savings account.

Jjjjigoo · 31/07/2018 13:30

Our older ones never win. The kids ore recent ones have won a few times. I know its not supposed to make a difference how old they are but i'm suspicious.

DryHen · 31/07/2018 13:32

DH had £200 in bonds and won £25 the third month. I had £3000 and won £25 twice in three years.

Ariela · 31/07/2018 13:33

My premium bonds are 50+ years old, won a small amount once.
My daughter's are 18 years old and she has won approx 10-20% of their value per year on average.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/07/2018 13:35

Depends largely on how many you've got, IMO.

Though you could be lucky. Dh bought a fiver's worth in the 60s and promptly won £25 - you could almost have a holiday in Spain for that then. But he put it back into Ernies, as we've always called them.

We both had the max for several years and won small amounts regularly, biggest was £500 and that only once. Annual return over the last few years - I used to check - was only just over 1%.

Dh still has some but doesn't often win anything now. Mine all went to help dds with house purchases. Not that I regret that in the least, but I do sometimes miss the anticipation each month, even when it turned out to be nothing or just one x £25.

Glaserator, they will do a check for you if you give all relevant info. Even if you've lost the original certificate, they still count. Well worth doing - you never know, there might be a win sitting there!

Have a look at the NS&I website. ,
