I have had premium bonds since they first came out,i have never won a penny, surely in all this time i should have won at least once
Are the older ones still in the draw,?
I have always updated change of addresses etc
I would like to buy more, but this is putting me off

DF had a win a few months ago with his very old premium bonds.

£300 it was and he gave each of his 4 GC £50 each of it and £50 to me bless him

I have some (bought for the then child me by DPs) but not won anything.

Polarbearflavour · 31/07/2018 13:42

I’m waiting for my big win. I have £100 invested!

Guest2025 · 31/07/2018 14:02

My in laws put into the kids every birthday. I dont mind, i think there was a small win on one. TBH I feel sad that the kids dont get any form of actual present instead at their age, they are too young to understand , but it'll be great when they are older

Bambamber · 31/07/2018 14:05

I only have a few hundred in there but win 25 quid a few times a year. It's not a lot but it's still more than I would have

princesstiasmum · 31/07/2018 14:06

Admittedly i only bought 3 as only £1 each at the time, that was 1961 i think, but bought another £100 since, but having them 55 years you would think i would have won something,
Had only a very small income then and 1baby, but i do suspect the old ones dont have much chance,
I will check though
Waiting for the Post code lottery too, part of our town won about 4 years ago, not my part though,
I am also in a local hospice lottery, only ever won a couple of tenners,
My daughter joined after me, and won£2000 after 1 month

I have £100. Had them for 11 years. Won 35 the other week which was a surprise because you don't normal get anything with low bonds

princesstiasmum · 31/07/2018 14:18

Well just checked, nothing,i dont think i will bother getting any more, and cant afford thousands of pounds,

We’ve got £3k in and often get cheques for £25.

My poor old Fil asked me to check on an old one he had when he was a boy. Had convinced himself that it must have been very valuable by now. It hadn’t won a thing.

Theweasleytwins · 31/07/2018 14:27

I won 1000 once and also 50 and 25

Have 2 dsis who were brought them by the same person at the same time who haven't won anything

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 31/07/2018 14:31

My parents both have the maximum amount (60,000 I think) and they win £25 two or three times a month. I have £3k and have won £25 once in ten yearsGrin

I have £20,000 and "win" £25 every month, without fail....

Except that my money is in a Santander 123 account (1.5% interest)

Seriously, all this talk of 'winning' small amounts is misleading - premium bonds are really just a form of unreliable savings account!
As a PP said - read the MoneySavingExpert view on them: www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/premium-bonds/

The only possible reason for having them is the thrill and excitement at the thought that you have a minuscule chance of winning a big prize.

Wonderwine · 31/07/2018 14:47

Wizard - if you've exhausted savings options elsewhere then they might be a safe place to save cash, also winnings are tax-free and your money is 'safe' in the sense it is backed by the government.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/07/2018 14:50

Might not be the case now interest rates are lower, but it has previously been said that, mathematically, there is a better chance of winning a million by putting your money in the best available savings account and spending some of the interest earned on lottery tickets.

AnnabelleLecter · 31/07/2018 14:58

Despite having almost maximum investment we often only get £25 each but sometimes get several x £25.
I'd be very happy with one of the medium prizes £10-£100k

LookAtIt · 31/07/2018 15:12

Agree with others suggesting you check out Money Saving Expert.

MaiaRindell · 31/07/2018 15:57

This has reminded me that my grandprents bought me some in the 70s and I have never checked the numbers. I bet there isn't a fortune waiting for me!

MonumentVal · 31/07/2018 16:04

DP had some from the 60s and found them recently - he'd won £50 around 1969 so was hopeful there'd be a couple hundred quid winnings.
Not a sausage.

cptartapp · 31/07/2018 16:17

I have about £15k worth. In five mònths I have won £1050! Very lucky.

cptartapp · 31/07/2018 16:19

wonder you actually 'win' £20 per month with Santander as the account fees are £5.

huggybear · 31/07/2018 17:13

Wonder - the premium bond rate is 1.4 and you could win something big. With interest rates so low, why not give it a go?

CointreauVersial · 31/07/2018 17:19

I have a grand total of 26 premium bonds, all dating back to the late 60s, given to me as a baby.

I still have the original "bond" certificates, one with my grandmother's handwriting on (they don't issue them any more).

I will never get rid of them, because it's sentimental more than anything, and £26 buys sod all.

But in 51 years I have won......precisely NOTHING.

PrivateDoor · 31/07/2018 17:22

I have had a tenner's worth since I was a baby and once won £25 on them. I later bought a further £100 and won 4x£25 so doubled my money - but that has been over 6 years or so Grin So not exactly a great return! I managed to find a list once of the winnings and it showed how many bonds each winner held, it really was mostly people with the max bonds who won the significant amounts.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/07/2018 17:29

tart

As well as the interest, you also get cashback on bills which is more than £5 pm for most accounts. Our bills are comparatively low and we get about £4.50 cashback each month.

OctaviaOctober · 31/07/2018 17:56

You can only pass on premium bonds for one year?! Wow, I was going to leave my sister £1000 in premium bonds, may have to look at sorting something out there. Mind you, I'd had them since 2001 and no wins yet!
