I'm just wondering how much weight you lost by the time you needed to replace most of your pre-diet clothes? How did you manage?

I'm hoping to keep most of my current clothes until I've lost around 3 stone but I'm not sure if that's reasonable. I've been reading that many women tend to lose a dress size each time they drop 10-14 pounds. Not sure if height (or lack of in my case!) would affect this? I'm 5'3".

I kept everything. Lots of elastic waists and flowing tops

YouTheCat · 31/07/2018 10:39

I'm shorter than you. I lost 3 stones a few years ago. After the first stone I dropped a dress size. After another 1 and a half lost, I dropped another dress size. I've put on a stone and gone up a dress size. I have a couple of pairs of jeans in the lower dress size that I'd like to get back into.

I'd say you'll need at least the next size down.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 31/07/2018 10:39

Have lost 10 stone and am currently sat in a size 28 tshirt even tho I am now an 18...it is now a shorter summer dress with judicious use of a cable belt

Weareallstoriesintheend · 31/07/2018 10:39

Every stone/ stone and a half I went down a dress size. Overall I lost 7stone. I'm 5'1". after losing 3stone most of my clothes were too big. Especially jeans.

paap1975 · 31/07/2018 10:40

I lost 3 stone and I think I have now replaced my whole wardrobe (over several years). Your bra size will probably change several times, I found that to be the biggest hassle/expense.

You'll find there are some things you can hang on to an others that just won't work. Find a good seamstress who can take things in for you. It's cheaper than replacing them

calzone · 31/07/2018 10:42

I lost 3.5 stone and went from a 16 to a size 12.

I quite enjoyed the new clothes purchases.

thirstyformore · 31/07/2018 10:43

I lost 3.5 stone. Went from size 16/18 to 10/12. I had to get a few clothes at around size 14 (jeans, couple of work trousers/dresses), but mainly made do with belts etc. Then when I hit my target had a massive spending spree!! Chucked out all my big clothes and now I have a ward robe full of well fitting items!

Took a few years to replace everything though. Buying new clothes is expensive, particularly big ticket items like winter coats, leather jackets etc.

I can’t afford to put the weight back on!

YouTheCat · 31/07/2018 10:43

I kept one pair of my pre-weightloss jeans (just in case). They are enormous on me now.

thecatsthecats · 31/07/2018 10:43

I've lost about 2st so far, but to be honest, I have always been inclined to elastic waists/stretchy material and have oversized boobs, so have always needed a larger size (my bust is a size 22, was a size 24 - I'm max size 18 elsewhere).

I find I just look better in my clothes so far - belting up, and waiting until I've lost more to show off!

YouTheCat · 31/07/2018 10:45

Dd lost 3 stone and went from a 14/16 to a size 8/10. She looks amazing (not that she didn't before). All she's kept of her old stuff is a few baggy jumpers and t-shirts.

SilverGiraffe7 · 31/07/2018 10:45

I've lost 2.5 stone and gone from a size 20 to a 12/14. No way I can still wear the vast majority of my clothes. This may be down to vanity - my shape has changed massively and I want to show off my new figure! (Most of my pre diet clothes were attempts to hide bulk...) Did put some waist ties on a few favourites to make them last longer, tho! Grin Can be an expensive time, otherwise.

GeminiRising · 31/07/2018 10:46

I've lost 5 stone and went from a size 22 to a 16. I bought a few items off ebay to see me through each size drop and then sold them again when they got too big - also sold as much of my original size 22 stuff as I could when it no longer fit. I only started buying 'new' clothes once I got to where I wanted to be.

katmunchkin · 31/07/2018 10:48

I lost 2 stone on SW and went from a 16 to a 12 (now float around 11 stone).

thecatsthecats · 31/07/2018 10:53

Yes, charity shops are also a good place to buy things that just don't work by adding a belt.

I also bought a pair of jeans a size down (tight at my last weigh in, but just fit, good size now...), and I already had a pair the size below that (bought optimistically long ago and turned out to be too small then :( ).

Because of my chest size, I've always hung on to bras that weren't actually broken, because they cost so blumming much in the first place. Very smug in my 'small' bras now!

MaudesMum · 31/07/2018 10:53

5ft 4 here, and I lost 2 1/2 stone over about a year, and went down two dress sizes. When I went from 20-ish to 18-ish, most of my clothes were fine, but when I went to 16-ish, absolutely nothing fitted, and some of the the things I'd bought when I went down to 18 were looking pretty big. I haven't dared throw away anything yet, as I'm lacking confidence that I'll keep it off, so have several storage boxes full of large clothes. I need to lose another stone to get my bmi comfortably out of obese, and would estimate that will make me size 14 - being slightly deterred by the thought that I'll have to buy still more clothes!

thecatsthecats · 31/07/2018 11:14

Maude

  1. Well done!

  2. I've actually recently made the decision that one of the ways in which I'll maintain my weight is to chuck the majority of my loose, oversized, over flattering clothes when I'm down to the weight I want to be. I'll keep a pair of jeans in the next size up, and once a month, try them on. If they feel a better fit, then it will be time to tighten up on the diet!

My weight gain was a steady climb. I'm very tall, with a very broad bone structure and big boobs, so up to a size 16 you'd call me curvy, but I'd be less obviously overweight than most people (my natural figure aged 18 was a 14 hip 10 waist). It was only over that that I felt overweight, but I kept telling myself that it was fine, until it wasn't.

I don't ever want to be someone who thinks that every extra pound here or there makes me LOOK bad (I genuinely don't, up to a point!), but I don't want my weight to creep up again.

PrivateDoor · 31/07/2018 11:18

I shopped in charity shops for jeans and tops to get me through, I skipped some sizes out altogether though. Save your money for a big spree when you reach your goal weight!

mayhew · 31/07/2018 11:21

I lost two stone. I took in t shirts by machining an inch in from the seams from armpits to waist. Similar on casual trousers and skirts. And/or belts. It worked well. And some cheap smaller clothes from Sainsburys

Auntpetunia2015 · 31/07/2018 11:21

I became very friendly with my local seamstress as I got loads of things mainly expensive work tops dresses and skirts taken in after loosing 3 stone. Cheaper than replacing most of the items

SuburbanRhonda · 31/07/2018 11:26

I lost 2 stone on SW and went from a 16 to a 12 (now float around 11 stone).

I’ve lost two stone with MFP and am now a comfortable 16 whereas before I was more 16/18.

I am an apple shape though so maybe that makes a difference? Also I choose my clothes very carefully and would be gutted if I had to buy a whole new wardrobe.

Notagainmun · 31/07/2018 11:26

I lost four stone and went from an 18 to 12. I bought the basics in a 14 but any new clothes are now 12 but rail wear some 14 although they are very roomy now.

FuzzyCustard · 31/07/2018 11:29

I've lost 2 stone but have only gone from a size 16-18 to a 14-16. I'm 5'8" and am feeling rather disheartened. I'd hoped to be smaller than this by now. :(

Fatted · 31/07/2018 11:30

I'd say a stone is about a dress size. When I lost just over 2 stone, I dropped 2 dress sizes and a least 1 bra size.

Wish I was back there honestly.

Thebluedog · 31/07/2018 11:30

I’m the same height as you and when I lost 3 stone I went from a size 16 to a 10. Tshirts and tops were fine as long as you don’t mind baggy, but jeans and trousers and skirts, anything without a stretchy waist I had to replace after about 2 stone and then again after the last stone, as I like skinny jeans etc and it looks just daft if they are the wrong size. I’m pear shaped anyway and most of my weight came off that part of me

SuburbanRhonda · 31/07/2018 11:32

fuzzy

See my post - I’m the same, more or less.

I don’t care what the number is on the label. I feel better and know it’s healthier for me to be carrying less weight at my age (late 50s).
