I'm just wondering how much weight you lost by the time you needed to replace most of your pre-diet clothes? How did you manage?

I'm hoping to keep most of my current clothes until I've lost around 3 stone but I'm not sure if that's reasonable. I've been reading that many women tend to lose a dress size each time they drop 10-14 pounds. Not sure if height (or lack of in my case!) would affect this? I'm 5'3".

I find this stuff confusing. I lost 3 1/2 stone and went down one size. How do other people go down a size a stone? I was a 22,l ost the weight and was (mostly) a 20. A very loose item I could occasionally get an 18. I was exercising too, so toned up. Made no difference. It’s not fair!

BackToBeingMe · 31/07/2018 11:41

I have lost just over 3 1/2 stone since having my coil removed at the start on the year, no diet or other change I am also 5'3. I started at a 14 bottoms 16 top and a size 36F bra, now a size 8-10 and a 32d bra. I didn't want to waste money on all the sizes inbetween so bought one nice set of clothes in the appropriate size and new cheap tops from Primark, I then added an adjustable waist like the kids have to my jeans and pulled them in! I bought new summer clothes in the correct size as we weight has stabilised around 9st 3lbs. I am a sahm mum tho so didn't need to look smart for work and I had my one set if need to look particularly nice for things like a meal out etc.

Underhisi · 31/07/2018 11:46

I've lost 10 lb and have gone from a 16/18 ( mainly 18) to a 16. I'm going to buy some new jeans in the autumn as I like a fitted style and my 18s will be too big but I think I will get away with the same tops for a while. i"m aiming for a 12/ 14 eventually.

Thingsthatgo · 31/07/2018 11:47

It took me a while to lose the first dress size... mostly because I was wearing lots of my clothes too tight! But then I dropped sizes fast and I needed to replace clothes. I just got a very basic selection of clothes, mostly from h and m for the in between sizes.

LaBurraRioja · 31/07/2018 12:59

Thanks for the replies, very helpful. It looks as if I will need to budget for making some new clothes purchases. I'm trying to remember what weight I was when I last fitted into size 16 clothes but that was 10 years ago and I'm now 18/20.

Anyone want to talk about how they lost their weight? I've looked at so many different diets including ones that I failed at in the past and my head's in a spin. I feel as if I don't really know what to believe about what constitutes 'healthy' eating nowadays.!

I did slimming world and lost 3 stone. Went from a 16 to an 8. Bastard menopause has piled it all back on Sad

YouTheCat · 31/07/2018 13:12

I reduced portion size and cut out most snacks/crisps/sweets.

The weight crept back a bit because of cake and not doing enough exercise.

Trying to remedy this by doing more exercise during the holidays of course I haven't just stuffed a daim bar in my face, oh no

antsinthejam · 31/07/2018 13:15

Ive lost 64lb, was 16st10 to start and a size 18top, 20 bottom

I lost weight more from my top half and middle tonstart with and had to lose about 2st before needing the dress size down. I bought the absolute minimum I could get away with as I was still losing weight. So at that point I was a 16 top, 18 bottom

After another 1.5 stone or so I started replacing with the next size down, so at maybe 13 1/2 stone or so. 14 top, 16 bottom.

I replaced again recently for 12/14, and was just over 12st. I know from previous experience that at 11st I'll be a comfortable 12 bottom, 10 top, and at 10st will be a loose 12/tight 10 bottom, 8 top. I'm aiming for 9.5st which will hopefully be 10 bottom/8 top

I think that the intervals between sizes in weight terms decrease as you get smaller. It takes less weight to lose a dress size. I'm also more likely to wear clothes tightly fitting when I'm lighter, when I was big I bought everything loose, so that reduces the size needed faster too

RhiWrites · 31/07/2018 13:20

I’ve lost 3 stone 11lbs. None of my clothes got, not even the bras. I buy new active wear every couple of months and the rest of my clothes are too big or from charity shops.

I lost it by (in order)
Walking
Running (couch to 5k)
Aerobics
Zumba
Body Pump
Circuit training and HIIT
Calorie counting and generally keeping active.

I never thought it was possible until I did it. I thought people just got fatter. Turns out that, if you have no health issues, you can lose a bunch of weight.

Discipline is more important than motivation.

CheeseGirl4 · 31/07/2018 13:25

I lost 7 stone and went from a 24 to a 12, with a bit of a pause 4.5 stone in. I skipped size 22 entirely, bought only a couple of 20s, but needed to replace everything by 18. Depending on the style and cut, clothes can fit for about 2 stone or only a few pounds. I think you'll want to buy some transitional clothes for the inbetween stage.

gendercritter · 31/07/2018 13:27

I buy lots on ebay - there is so much new or nearly new stuff on there. I sell on things that don't suit me or fit. It saves you a fortune.

I've dropped a lot of weight. I cut out all junk food. It can taste good but it's terrible for you (I care about health over my appearance, which is a really good thing to focus on). I pretty much eat natural food only. I follow Slimming World largely - lots of it is really sensible. I make sure to eat healthy fats as they make you full and are full of nutrition. I limit snacks and drink lots of water. If you can walk (I can't) then walking 10k steps a day is really really great for you in so many ways. Oh and I have one treat a day so I can stick to my diet - for me at the moment that something date based like Deliciously Ella's energy balls. I barely eat any sugar other than that and have found the more you cut it out, the less you miss it. I still eat a really delicious diet.

evilharpy · 31/07/2018 13:27

I've lost about 20lbs and have dropped one size on my bottom half and two sizes on my top half (I'm a pear shape). I still have more to lose. Luckily I still have most of the clothes I've outgrown on the way up to this weight so they'll all fit me again at some point on the way back down.

MaMisled · 31/07/2018 13:35

I'm 5ft 2 and went from 12.7st to 8st3, size 16/18 down to 8/10. I didn't buy any size 14 clothes but I hit 10st and bought a lot of size 12s. They soon happily went on ebay because they were too big and I bought loads of lovely new stuff in size 8/10. I bought mostly second hand from ebay. Good quality brands at a fraction of their normal price.

WhenDoISleep · 31/07/2018 13:39

I have very nearly lost 3 stone since this time last year. TBH, I'm still wearing most of the same clothes I was then but they do look a lot better although are starting to be a little big and I have also started wearing some clothes a size smaller (mostly shorts and a couple of skirts atm) that I had in my wardrobe from when I weighed less a few years ago.

It might depend on your body shape - I'm an apple with v big norks and most of my weight carried around my stomach. The weight I have lost has come mostly off my stomach and I have also lost some of the back fat I had. My boobs haven't really decreased in size, so my tops are still usable, but I think I'm getting to the point were I will probably buy any new tops for Autumn/Winter in a size smaller. I will also need to by jeans in a size smaller in a few weeks.

Mondkind · 31/07/2018 13:41

I'm just over 5ft and lost 4st in the past. I went from a size 14 to a size 6, but realistically, only needed to downsize my clothes every 2st. A lot will depend on your shape and where you lose fat.

Gingernaut · 31/07/2018 13:42

I've lost 3 and a half stone.

Less than 5 feet tall and I've gone from size 22 to a 14/16.

Still got about 3 stones to lose, but loving the Ben & Jerry's too much.

Wingedharpy · 31/07/2018 13:46

I lost 4 stone and reduced by 3 dress sizes.
Clothes that I couldn't use by adding darts at the back etc, I gave to the charity shop and got some smaller sized stuff. I didn't go mad buying stuff - just a couple of smaller sized tops and trousers at first and have gradually built up my wardrobe selection again.
I did toy with the idea of storing my bigger clothes "just in case" but decided that that mentality wasn't good as I was almost telling myself that I'd put the weight back on.
So, I got rid and 3 years later have not put on any weight.
I did 5:2 and once I felt I'd lost enough, I continued with 5:2 rather than going to 6:1 but just reintroduced some of those foods that I love but had avoided e.g. cheese.
Well done you and stick with it.
It really is life changing in terms of how I feel and the amount of energy I now have.

Wingedharpy · 31/07/2018 13:53

Cardibach: I suppose the answer to your question is that it will depend on where on your body you carry/lose most weight.
If it's on your legs or bum region, it probably won't make much difference to your overall clothes size.
Unfortunately there is no way of changing your basic body shape IYKWIM.

beela · 31/07/2018 13:54

I'm 5'3 (and a half Grin), and I recently lost 3 stone, taking me from 12.5 stone to 9.5 stone, a size 14/16 to a size 10.

I did it by following the no-s diet, and upping my exercise, it was slow and steady (around 1lb per week) but I've not had any trouble maintaining so far.

Some of my old clothes are still ok... But only things like hoodies really, plus a few bits that were getting a bit tight and are now a bit loose e.g. the size 14 denim cut offs which I am wearing today to scrat around in, that I can now pull up and down without undoing.

I bought some size 12 things on the way down, which are mostly still wearable but would fit better in a 10.

I will definitely need to replace my winter coats this year £££

You might also find that your style changes. I'm much happier in fitted tops now so my old baggy ones seem even bigger.

Ezzie29 · 31/07/2018 13:54

I was a size 18/20 and am now a 16/18 after losing 3 stone - I carry a lot of weight in my stomach which is why there’s not been a huge change in clothes size. I wore most of my old clothes until pretty recently but realise a lot of them were starting to hang wrong around my shoulders so got rid of them but I still have a fair few of my old clothes as well. Think it really depends on various things like height and where you carry most of your weight. From the front or back I look like I’ve lost a lot more weight than I actually have and then side on you can see how much tummy is still there! If I tense my stomach so it looks firmer I can pass for a good six months pregnant.

Churrolicious · 31/07/2018 13:57

I've lost just shy of six stone and am now down to a 8-10 from 20-22.

I kept most of the same tops the whole time, but bought a couple of new pairs of trousers (basically 1 x jeans and 1 x work trousers) after each couple of stone because they just looked ridiculous.

I'm starting to replace tops now but they didn't seem to look AS odd as I slimmed down.

Sgtmajormummy · 31/07/2018 14:33

I’m on a no-sugar, very low carb diet for health reasons and have gone down 4 dress sizes since February.
The day I went into H&M and could choose from the normal range was like “Hallelujah, I’m back!”.
The biggest loss has been from my legs- I can now see light above my knees Grin. If your trousers fall off your bum as you’re walking it’s time to say goodbye!
I’ve enjoyed buying a few things: low cost classic dark jeans in each size as I go down. Leggings are cheap (baggy stretched leggings are not flattering) and you can do tunics out of what used to be tops! I’ve also taken in trousers in an equal 3cm strip all the way down the outside. Half hour job.
I have a noticeable amount of excess skin on my upper arms (never my favourite body part) so even though I COULD wear nice shift dresses I prefer things with sleeves. I’ve kept my boobs but lost back fat so my band size went down. Just buy one good bra in the right size and copy it with cheaper ones. Wrap & tie dresses may be a good way to downsize but I don’t have many.

For classic, expensive things like coats or business wear, charity shops will be my first stop, to give back what no longer looks good (farewell camel swing coat which has become “swamp coat”) and buy something more flattering, while doing a good deed.

I am enjoying the freedom of having more choice from my existing wardrobe, saying goodbye to some old stuff and reconsidering clothes from my past. I got out my old swimming costumes, some really good (expensive, armour plated) pieces that have lasted, and enjoyed visiting the beach this summer. I’ll convert a few into cross back style as they were gaping or slipping off the shoulders and get another year out of them!

Maelstrop · 31/07/2018 14:40

8 stones, SW, lots of swimming, walking, riding, badminton.

I had to replace stuff like trousers and jackets after a couple of stones. I bought very cheap stuff knowing I would need to buy more again within months.

AllTheNameChanges · 31/07/2018 15:05

I'm 5'3" I've lost a stone and a half and not dropped a dress size yet. I guess it may depend where you carry/ lose the weight. I need a belt but nothing looks awful. I think I can likely manage until I shift the other 2 stone. I went from 13 1/2 stone (size 16) to 12 stone.

Underhisi · 31/07/2018 15:14

I've cut out sugary food and crisps ( don't buy any for the house) and reduced portion size whilst increasing veg content so I am on 1300-1400 calories. I'm only losing 1lb a week but it has been a consistent loss.
