To hate MLMs with a passion?

I've never gotten involved with one. So I don't actually know for sure if I could be someone who made £40k a month. But...

I've been pitched again this morning. I wasn't expecting it. Thought it was a brew and breakfast chit chat. Instead, 4 other women there I didn't know. Products laid out on the coffee table like a stall. Then the sales pitch. 3 hours later, "I'll think about it!".

My friend is missing and there is someone else using her body. She didn't even speak the same anymore, lots of sales words and presumptive language. RIP Polly. I'll be here for you when you reach the other side of this.

Not sure if Cambridge Diet falls into MLM but my sister is trying to get me signed up as she’s becoming a consultant after following the plan for me to start losing weight in a few months as I’ve “put on a bit and must want to get that extra weight off”....

I’m about 7 months pregnant so me putting on weight is normal and as I’ll be BF there’s no way I’d be going on that diet!

Spudlet · 31/07/2018 22:42

Every few weeks, there's someone trying to recruit others into one of these things on the village Facebook page. It's all so perky and optimistic, and it sets my teeth on edge. You can see exactly how people are snared in. They're always explictly going after mothers too, going on about how 'flexible' they are. Bloody things.

dailymailaredicks · 01/08/2018 07:55

What I don't get is why they don't seem to Google it before signing up. If you were getting a regular job, you'd want to find out what other people think. At interview, you'd ask why the current post holder is leaving. I'm truly baffled.

And yes, love the bot watch threads!

it's almost wilful blindness. You can google SO easily. I think new bots must be discouraged from doing any research....which should be a big red flag.

I posted about it recently, the dramatic hysterical behaviour the MLM sellers display.
My MLM 'friends' since then have worsened. One still performs songs to try and 'sell' her products (but I know so far only her and her mother have used them)
They all flit from one to the next.. Cambridge Diet didn't work in the long term (although I fell for it twice with this friend! as a client not buying into the scheme) so now it's organic cleaning products. £18.00 for a child's toothpaste etc.
Younique didn't work so now it's hair products. And so on...
All with the accompanying Facebook posts about having 'found my tribe' and 'bosslady' and videos about why we need to ignore the 'haters' and 'why I'm not a MLM" (really? then why protest so much?)

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/08/2018 17:49

And yes they all speak in a weird new robotic salespitch language... it's like call centre staff reading from a script

JellyBaby666 · 02/08/2018 18:01

I had a friend contact me out of the blue after I’d left my job and was unemployed and really struggling, and offer me a project she was working on I’d be perfect for. I got my hopes up a bit, then she was insistent I meet her with my boyfriend as we’d both be perfect for it - bit odd. And then BOOM MLM - I could have cried. And I was hungover so I was so cross at her for pouncing on me at a vulnerable time and for getting me out of bed on a Sunday morning and delaying the bacon sarnie and coffee I desperately needed!

Is Avon an MLM?

Spongebobette · 02/08/2018 18:02

The language is a real giveaway when someone becomes 'botted'

Their inbox is always 'on fire'
They are 'smashing' promotions

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/08/2018 18:03

Yep I had that twice Jellybaby, after job loss... and could have cried. One was a so called good friend I hadn't seen for a while (wanted to suddenly see me re Juice plus or similar) the other a FB friend , who kept sending me marketing videos.. 'I'm only here to help, I'll set you up an account'.. grrrr

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/08/2018 18:04

Oh yeh and a girl from school I wasn't friends with, whom I'd not seen for 35 YEARS, FB friended me to try and sell Juice Plus too!

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/08/2018 18:07

The best is when they are hyperventilating over a new product, they will never reveal what it is publicly.. 'PM me, hun, can't tell you how excited i am'' and it turns out to be that they spent like £165 on 'new kit' , or a new lip gloss has come out.
I never understand the makeup ones as why would someone spend that much on unknown brands? If you had that much money to burn wouldn't you buy something high end , rather than spending say £18 on a market stall quality mascara ?(yes I have tried Poonique mascara.. I was once 'gifted' one) Hmm

Spongebobette · 02/08/2018 18:07

...and they do it all trying to convince you it's a big favour they are doing you, showing you this amazing opportunity, never mentioning that by recruiting you and convincing you to buy the 'business in a box' or 'presenter kit' you are making money FOR THEM!!!!!

LARLARLAND · 02/08/2018 18:08

I see that Ben Cohen and Khristina Rihanoff promote Forever Living.

Spongebobette · 02/08/2018 19:17

Yes they must be desperate and my opinion of them could not be lower. Using their celebrity to woo people (mainly women) to part with money to join a company where 97% LOSE money. Shameful.

NeverTwerkNaked · 02/08/2018 19:25

I lost a lovely lovely friend when she was recruited to Arbonne.
I hadn’t seen her for about 6 months, she invited me round for drinks and I was so thrilled to have a chance to catch up. Turned out it was an Arbonne pitch! 3/4 of the way through I am afraid I got up and announced that I was devastated she had got involved and I couldn’t listen to another minute of the pseudo scientific nonsense. I miss her as a friend but I couldn’t stay silent.

SpottingTheZebras · 02/08/2018 19:29

Good for you @NeverTwerkNaked

DaisyDreaming · 02/08/2018 19:32

There should be a support group for those friendless people who emerge from the other side without their huns, with debt and not being an amazing mummy who gets paid every hour while I sit here and watch my amazing babies play

DaisyDreaming · 02/08/2018 19:34

If your friend is still open and hasn’t closed herself off to common sense, could you try and talk her into keeping a chart of exactly everything she spends and everything she makes?

CatAnnoyance · 02/08/2018 19:35

Out of interest, is Scentsy and Body Shop at Home classed as MLMs? I get bombarded on FB from friends that sell from these companies and they say they're thinking of quitting their jobs to do it full time as they'd earn more?!

Guest6565 · 02/08/2018 19:37

^ Oh yes

KateGrey · 02/08/2018 19:45

Do you think it’s the fact they can work from home? And there’s few jobs that easily fit round school? I had a friend who did juice plus and then something else. Both amazing! Both gave her cars and holidays etc. I don’t see how people can’t see it for what it is.

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/08/2018 19:58

Can anyone explain...how can Body Shop At Home make any money when there's actual shops you can go into or big offers on their website? i mean you wouldn't do any other high street shop At Home? Whose idea was that? It's not like it's something unusual/ niche... and most people have been shopping there since at least the 80s, maybe even the 70s if you are older...

DaisyDreaming · 02/08/2018 20:02

I don’t understand bodyshop at home either, they do special offers but they aren’t as good as the special offers direct from the website using discount codes. Someone I know does bodyshop and it’s solved her life long skin condition- the same one that forever living cured when selling that

What do people think about Utility Warehouse? A friend of mine has been sucked in and speaks like she’s in a cult
