Bathroom comes with the house??!!

So DH and I have just bought a new house (not brand new but new to us :)) and it cost us a lot of money (far more than a care to admit! :))
We moved in yesterday, the house is perfect except for one thing...

They've taken the bloody bathroom with them!!!!

One of the two main bathrooms upstairs is literally empty, like I don't mean just the furniture which you obviously take with you. But they've taken the bath, sink and shower!!!!

The room is tiled but theres random pipes sticking out of walls where these things should be!! The only thing left is the toilet. I honestly don't know what to do... We were going to redo the bathroom anyway at some point but never told this to anybody and weren't planning to do so until at least November/December time but now we don't have a choice!!

The kids come home from the holiday with my in-laws on Tuesday and we've got no bathroom for them!!!!

AIBU to think that the bathroom comes with the house, or is it totally reasonable to take the bathroom with you to your new house??!!

@Larrythecat We had the opposite problem. We left fixtures that had not been listed but in my opinion were standard (carpets, curtain rails, etc)

Hmm, carpets yes, curtain rails maybe, but you still agree that sort of thing before hand or it comes with you when you leave ideally you sell them for extra cash Grin.

...and bits and pieces for replacement or fixing stuff, such as the matching leftover paint, matching leftover bathroom tiles, (new) spare kitchen cupboard doors, etc.

...but that second lot does just sound like crap the buyer will have to bin. Paint never matches because the colour changes once the sun gets on it on the wall; nobody ever replaces the odd bathroom tile; and who on earth keeps "spare" cupboard doors hanging round anyway?

You made your own bed with that one, so the buyer had every right to make you sort it out at his convenience.

Bluelady · 31/07/2018 12:28

At least they've owned up. Doesn't make them any less bonkers, though.

Clutterbugsmum · 31/07/2018 12:29

Apparently they couldn't see the problem in it, they paid for the bathroom therefore they should keep it Well they are going to be in for shock then aren't they.

My friend had a very high end bathroom fitted in their house and they wanted to take to their new house they were building so they removed it and replace it with new cheaper bathroom but still good quality when they put their house up for sale.

Mummyrowland · 31/07/2018 12:29

They thought they were entitled to it how bloody stupid!!

Who has decided the payments amount? I've had quotes for new bathrooms and they vary dramatically from 4 to about 12k!

You need to ensure that fixtures and fittings are paid for aswell as installation and repair of any damages not just the cost of the suite or you will be majorly out of pocket.

Can't help but wonder what the removal people thought about it!!!

Yes, this!

sexnotgender · 31/07/2018 12:32

Can you imagine if everyone moving house took bathrooms and kitchens with them Confused how generous of them to leave the kitchen!
Utter loons...

@Lighthouse - I would have liked to take the cat. It was in two of the photographs on the property details so I could have pushed to have it included.

I was reading through the thread and the OP's update about how the vendors had paid for the bathroom so thought taking it was fine.

Our seller accepted our offer and then her boyfriend rang us and asked if we would raise the offer by £2,000 because they had installed a new boiler system.

We said no. Our agents argued back and forth a bit and the boyfriend made noises about taking the boiler with them. Some very strongly worded letters were exchanged and in the end the seller agreed that she wouldn't be removing the boiler or asking for more money.

When we moved in they left the pack of warranties and such and it turned out they got that boiler for free from a charity that offers grants to pay for heating for people on low incomes.

So the boyfriend wanted us to pay £2000 for a boiler he said they had bought but which they were given for free and didn't even pay for installation of.

And although they did leave it in place, they unplumbed their washing machine without turning the water off or capping the pipes, so they flooded the kitchen, but the water went into a cupboard first so we only found the flood as their van drove away.

Our buyer was even worse than our seller though, so you're right, its amazing we carried on buying or selling at all.

limecordial · 31/07/2018 12:42

When we bought our house we completed at 2pm and the CFs we bought from were there another two hours finishing off their packing though not doing any cleaning and they still left a ton of shit for us to deal with. (The same thing happened with the last house we bought except the vendors were nice and the wife was upset to be leaving the home where she had brought up her kids so we were fine with it.) The solicitor and agent were both aware this time and hassled the vendors on our behalf but it still took a while to get them out. They tried to charge us £500 for the fitted fridge freezer - we said as it was fully integrated it was part of the fixtures and fittings (solicitor agreed) so they reluctantly left it for us. But they didn't tell us they had broken the only shower in the house and it was unusable and nor did they mention other things that they had mysteriously trashed too. But as I have never met anyone who has a good word to say about them this shouldn't even surprise me

InsomniacAnonymous · 31/07/2018 12:44

These vendors moved into rented accommodation didn't they? Surely there was a bathroom fitted there so are they storing the stuff they removed or what? How weird.

astoundedgoat · 31/07/2018 12:44

We were recently researching a move to Rome, where even RENTAL properties (they do longer leases than the UK) regularly come without any kitchen and many with no bathroom furniture either.

ThisMightAlsoInterestYou · 31/07/2018 12:45

I would have thought that BS's solicitor should have made the terms of their contract of sale clear to them!

Borris · 31/07/2018 12:48

Place marking too. This is a good one!

cornflakegirl · 31/07/2018 13:00

@Larrythecat We have installed a couple of new cupboards in our kitchen, so would have been very grateful for spare doors. Ditto paint - it's chipped in a couple of places in one room, so a part tin for touch up would have been handy (might not have matched exactly, but would have been closer than exposed plaster!).

We offered leftover paint to our buyers - they declined so we took it to the tip.

SenecaFalls · 31/07/2018 13:06

And we have used floor tiles that the vendors left for us. In one room, the adhesive on the tiles failed in a couple of spots and the tiles cracked. It was really nice to have some that we could replace those with; otherwise we would have had to replace the entire floor as that particular pattern had been discontinued.

SinkGirl · 31/07/2018 13:18

Hope you get your money soon, the CFs

ThisMightAlsoInterestYou · 31/07/2018 13:36

How are they going to arrive at the amount?

Onecutefox · 31/07/2018 13:39

OP, at least they have admitted everything! Grin

Bluelady · 31/07/2018 13:39

I was wondering that too. I guess three quotes for making good and fitting, along with the fittings of OP's dreams, along with compensation for the inconvenience.

callymarch · 31/07/2018 13:45

its a good job they hadn't fitted a new roof and taken that with them!

Onecutefox · 31/07/2018 13:46

When we were buying a place there was an agreement that we didn't need furniture from the sellers. They moved out (abroad) and left their "junk" for us. The solicitor had contacted them to remove it asap. Next day it was gone. When you move in you want as less hassle as possible and not the opposite.

ThisMightAlsoInterestYou · 31/07/2018 13:48

Agree Bluelady, just the cost of the fittings themselves isn't going to be enough, there's all the labour, and as you mention, the not inconsiderable inconvenience. But of course, BS have to have the money to hand over - they may not. So I guess in that case they return the stolen goods and pay to have them re-fitted

Trinity66 · 31/07/2018 13:49

This reminds me of that old Richard Prior movie "Moving"

Bluelady · 31/07/2018 13:51

I wouldn't accept the old fittings as the removal may have damaged them. If they haven't got the money they'll just have to borrow it.

Lemonyknickers · 31/07/2018 14:02

shotsfired we are due to move in a couple of weeks and I will be leaving the spare tiles and paint. It is not uncommon to crack a tile and even if they want to redecorate, as I expect they do they may not. I've always been very grateful for people leaving that for us in the past.

LostNAlone · 31/07/2018 14:10

Like others said, its a good job they didnt pay for the roof and windows too!

The old owners of our house left us alsorts.. curtains in each room.. about 1/4 tin of paint for each room for touching up.. a box of laminate of the same batch code for the conservatory floor etc.
