I've had a break of a few weeks, and come back to many threads about prepping, stockpiling food and batterie so, and mass panic about the end of civilisation as we know it.

Dafuq!?

I know. I think they are doing it on purpose to try and scare others so there is a groundswell of anti Leave.

I had to laugh at grown adults being so silly though. They are acting like a huge meteor is heading towards earth and Bruce Willis can't save us Grin

Europe will not stop selling to us, there is money to be made and that transcends all barriers. Also the World is bigger than Europe, we can trade with many other nations for food, goods, services etc.

Thing is they are overdoing it so much that they are bringing out the "F it and be damned" in me and lots of others I know. Also have a feeling the major issues, if any, will be in Remainer "that London" rather than the Brexit supporting North which is far less reliant on cross channel trade for day to day supplies. Another aspect apt to bring out the thrawn (bloody minded) in me and lots of others.

OctaviaOctober · 29/07/2018 12:52

I think the big problem will be not the availability of things but the cost. Everyone will be trying to see what they can get away with charging us, including our supermarkets. Which is why stocking up on non perishables/long life products that you use may be a good idea now, especially for those on a budget.

MimpiDreams · 29/07/2018 12:53

People are panicking because they don't understand how international trade works. 50% of our foodstuffs are produced in the UK, no impact. 30% is imported from non-EU, no impact

Maybe lack of understanding of how international trade works is why people aren't panicking.

Firstly we do not produce 50% of our food entirely in the UK. The UK only has enough farmland to produce 1/3 rd of the food it needs. Much of the food 'produced' in in the UK uses ingredients sourced from abroad.

Secondly, all food from abroad will be affected. We lose trade deals with around 60 other countries as well as the EU. We can't even go to WTO rules as it stands as we have no agreed schedules or tariffs. We have agreed these with the EU and submitted them to the WTO for approval. Unfortunately several countries have already objected to them so now we have to have full negotiations with the WTO to get an agreement.

It's a bloody mess.

Ifailed · 29/07/2018 12:53

According to the Times, it's the government whose been accused of scaremongering about a no-deal exit, so it's the leavers who are now running 'Project Fear'.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 29/07/2018 12:53

I have a video of the sun on my phone to keep warm when the gas and electric dies off.

Ifailed · 29/07/2018 12:57

CaptainKirkssparetupee how will you charge your phone with no electricity? Maybe paint a picture of it.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 29/07/2018 12:58

We will sing kum by yah,eat the pets, put mooncups in our ears to block out the wailing
And pray to Lorraine Kelly to save us from apocalypse

howabout · 29/07/2018 12:58

Was that the same Times who have spent the last 18 months complaining about Govt secrecy and lack of preparedness?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 29/07/2018 12:59

how will you charge your phone with no electricity?
I have a theory that plugging an extension lead into itself will solve this issue.

Ifailed · 29/07/2018 13:00

CaptainKirkssparetupee or maybe get someone to send you some as an attachment to a message?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 29/07/2018 13:01

Yes, that's a good idea.

Ifailed · 29/07/2018 13:05

pray to Lorraine Kelly I don't think even the saintly Lorraine can help us. The current government have made a right pigs ear of Brexit, & I don't see an alternative labour government doing any better considering their divisions on the matter. We need to turn to a higher authority.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 29/07/2018 13:07

Ach now, there is nothing Lorraine Kelly can’t sort she’ll save us all
Hollyfuckingwilloughby she'll be first on the pyre for crimes against fashion

Does anyone else remember the petrol shortages in 2000? Many supermarkets (in London at least) ran out of bread, milk, baked beans etc.

The reason? It had nothing to do with the strikes, supermarkets were at pains to explain. Their supplies were never interrupted. It was due to panic buying - in other words people ran out and bought much more than they normally would because they were worried about shortages. Thus causing shortages.

THAT is the reason why I believe it would be sensible to get a little extra in over the months ahead. Because chances are that enough people will panic buy that you won’t be able to do your normal shop. And if everyone prepares and no one panic buys, well win-win really!

PestymcPestFace · 29/07/2018 13:13

Why not read The Grocer and see what the supermarkets are planning. Remember their main plan is to still trade and make a profit.

WellErrr · 29/07/2018 13:14

In the car?

Studlee · 29/07/2018 13:15

Because idiots believe everything they read & see on the main stream media especially BBC & CH4

caroldecker · 29/07/2018 13:19

A lot of time and money was spent on Y2k. However, there are many in the industry who believe it was a waste of time. Some countries, many schools and small business were not compliant and had no issues. Just because IT business charged companies millions to re-write code, does not mean it was necessary.

LeighaJ · 29/07/2018 13:21

@WellErrr

You're going to need one of these to wade through the madness.

To think that this place has gone completely nuts?
CaptainKirkssparetupee · 29/07/2018 13:23

A few years ago there was a petrol shortage, people panicked started taking all kinds of containers to petrol stations and a couple of people tragically blew themselves up.

The government encourage panic buying to temporarily increase sales of things, in the processa few people who believe it go overboard with tragic consequences.

Automatic · 29/07/2018 13:25

SO THATS why my local supermarket had hardly any stock in yesterday.......

Dottierichardson · 29/07/2018 13:25

Didn't take long for this thread to get infected, did it?

MN is a relatively open forum, if there are a number of posts on stockpiling this is a reflection of people's rl concerns. If you don't want to know what their concerns are, don't read the posts.
