I've had a break of a few weeks, and come back to many threads about prepping, stockpiling food and batterie so, and mass panic about the end of civilisation as we know it.

Dafuq!?

@Undercoverbanana, I know our CCG are making a plan regarding medications, but - as ever - there's no suggestion of what that plan might look like. I work with nursing homes, so completely understand your concerns (as do the CCGs).

OlderThanAverageforMN · 29/07/2018 12:00

People are panicking because they don't understand how international trade works. 50% of our foodstuffs are produced in the UK, no impact. 30% is imported from non-EU, no impact inc. stuff like rice which seems to be a preppers main food source. Water collected, treated and distributed via pipes in the UK, no issue, why are people fussing about water. Even petrol, traded in dollars so the price will probably go up, but comes in via pipeline, or international container ports, no issue. The 30% of EU imports, will just need new paperwork, most of which is now digital. What are all these extra checks at the ports?? Only 2% of imports are checked anyway. Large international importers are used to WTO rules, including our supermarkets, just look at the origins of the stuff in your cupboards... New Zealand apples anyone?

Seasawride · 29/07/2018 12:02

Totally agree op. I was on the recent Brexit thread and the hysteria would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad.

I honestly think some rabid remainders like Anna Soubry have almost taken leave of their senses. And I too voted remain.

Roussette · 29/07/2018 12:03

I'm sure you will have such an ab fab time on Love Island, Roussette

What's Love Island?

Loyaultemelie · 29/07/2018 12:03

Yep I thought it was a bit Shock although I have small stockpiles but that's because our power goes off for 4-5 days at a time when there's a bad storm (joys of rural living)so I might survive the zombie apocalypse or whatever we are expecting

OctaviaOctober · 29/07/2018 12:03

I wonder if any of them remember the millennium bug - when planes would drop out of the sky, when generators would stop and nuclear reacfora would over heat.

To be fair, many people worked for many months to prevent just that! One of them is a member here and has spoken about it. It's thanks to their hard work that nothing went wrong, it's not that it was never going to happen...

ConferencePear · 29/07/2018 12:04

We will dumb down our food quality standards from stringent EU ones to the US standard which is nowhere near as good for a start.

Our food standards are already better than the rest of the EU.
I didn't think we would be forced to buy American.

surferjet · 29/07/2018 12:05

Yanbu.

I think some remainers are genuinely going insane. & these are the people who think they know best & should be in charge?

derxa · 29/07/2018 12:05

Just bung a couple of lambs in the freezer WellErr. I'm old and remember the days of plain food. I'm sure we'll be fine.

derxa · 29/07/2018 12:07

Yes DH worked for years on a Year 2000 project but it's not comparable really.

abilockhart · 29/07/2018 12:07

For the empty headed, anything with facts and figures seems like hysteria.

derxa · 29/07/2018 12:10

For the empty headed, anything with facts and figures seems like hysteria. Well I admit to being empty headed. Do guide us oh wise one.

Roussette · 29/07/2018 12:10

I hope the scaremongerers' crystal balls keep working because they seem to know exactly how everything is going to pan out. BTW I'm a Remainer who doesn't believe in panicing.

CocoaGin70 · 29/07/2018 12:11

I'm still struggling to get my head around it all. They didn't teach me in school that food was only grown in Europe and not anywhere else in the world. Now I'm left scratching my head wondering what the farmers in the UK actually do, and how the rest of the world is managing. And I haven't even started to think where the tins of European produce are going to fit in the house. It's all such a stress Wink

Neolara · 29/07/2018 12:12

I've always thought the peppers were slightly unhinged, but I'm certainly considering stocking up. Things might be OK, but they also might not. It seems reasonable to assume that at the very least, food prices will rise fairly significantly after Brexit. I don't think anyone in the know disagrees with this.

Roussette · 29/07/2018 12:12

derxa (hellloooo!)

Well I admit to being empty headed. Do guide us oh wise one Grin

I only have one teensy weensy lonely little brain cell so I am particularly empty headed. I actually had to google what Love Island was!

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 29/07/2018 12:13

I know right.

I know things may be harder but the Apocolypse is not nigh.

I do think if you want to stockpile your favourite products in case of mega price increase then fair enough.

Now to real serious matters I'm zombie proofing my upstairs. 🧟‍♀️

Seasawride · 29/07/2018 12:13

Unfortunately though it’s the empty headed who are whipping up the hysteria and random speculation labelled as ‘facts’ a trade deal which will be sorted one way or another.

Remember the economy tanking on a leave vote and mass unemployment?? Didn’t happen. I voted remain just because the status quo is easier but quite looking forward to us leaving now.

Seasawride · 29/07/2018 12:14

And yes the rabid remainders do seem very unpleasent and patronising don’t they.

surferjet · 29/07/2018 12:18

Yes, the rabid remainers are extremely unpleasant & patronising - there’s only 1 out of about 100 of them who’s anywhere near normal.

derxa · 29/07/2018 12:20

Hi Roussette! How are you doing, lovely?

Roussette · 29/07/2018 12:21

All good in my neck o' the woods Derxa, hope you too Smile

Childrenofthesun · 29/07/2018 12:23

30% is imported from non-EU, no impact

Non-EU imports will also be affected if they come to the UK via EU distribution centres.

Slartybartfast · 29/07/2018 12:28

retailers will be rubbing their hands with glee

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 29/07/2018 12:30

the doom mongers, the bulgy eyed worriers & dystopian hell predictors all loving this
