Given the radiation risk.
Is it safe? Thoughts please...

I would like to go.

Sirzy · 29/07/2018 09:48

Presumably they wouldn’t do tours unless it was?

Seeyounexttue · 29/07/2018 09:48

As far as I know, the risk is considered low now. DH wants to go, and before I discovered my pregnancy I was planning on going with him - think he'll have to make it a lads trip now though

Vitalogy · 29/07/2018 09:49

Are they to wear special clothing?

continuallychargingmyphone · 29/07/2018 09:49

They can’t necessarily know sirzy

onalongsabbatical · 29/07/2018 09:50

Loads of people go. If he has a particular interest I can't see why not.
I'd like to go myself really.

OftenHangry · 29/07/2018 09:51

It is safe. Majority of the area. If you spend 2 days in there it would equal to one xray from a doctor. Thours usually spend a day or a half a day from what I hear.

WooYa · 29/07/2018 09:52

I'd love to go! It's supposed to be relatively safe, there is a time limit when people can be in the area and there have been tours going for years now.

MrsExpo · 29/07/2018 09:52

I understand they are only allowed to stay for short periods of time and that it's safe. How fascinating - lucky him ... I'd love to go and definitely would if given the opportunity.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 29/07/2018 09:53

It's fine as long as he's not planning on setting up a farm and eating his own produce in the 30 km exclusion zone. even then he'd probably be pretty ok

malmi · 29/07/2018 09:53

Of course they know it's safe, everyone will have a Geiger counter attached to them. They know exactly where is safe and where to avoid. They've been running these tours for years.

onalongsabbatical · 29/07/2018 09:53

Here you are - the tours are incredibly tightly controlled so that visitors don't disturb anything dangerous. www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/how-do-i-visit-chernobyl-is-it-safe-exclusion-zone-tours-radiation-ukraine-a7490851.html

Vitalogy · 29/07/2018 09:55

Are the plants and wildlife flourishing?

onalongsabbatical · 29/07/2018 09:58

Plants.

runningkeenster · 29/07/2018 09:59

I'd love to go, I think it would be very interesting.

IceCreamFace · 29/07/2018 10:00

It's fine. I wouldn't want to live there for a year but unless he's there more than two days it'll be less radiation than an X-ray at the dentist.

onalongsabbatical · 29/07/2018 10:02

Very interesting re wildlife - since the humans left it's flourished. thebiologist.rsb.org.uk/biologist/158-biologist/features/1493-out-of-the-ashes

Pippylou · 29/07/2018 10:04

Friend went & she's not stupid, said it was fascinating.

Oblomov18 · 29/07/2018 10:07

Of course it's safe to go for a few days, and have a tour. I bet it would be fascinating.

Llanali · 29/07/2018 10:09

I’d just love to go.
A friend has been working on the Fukushima clear up since about four months after the tsunami; that’s scary.

Juells · 29/07/2018 10:18

TBH I don't understand why anyone would want to visit the site of such a disaster. The impact on children has been devastating.

YANBU as I understand why you'd be concerned but it is fine, honestly, someone I work with goes on an organised tour to Pripyat every year with his photography club. You go with experienced and knowledgeable guides and are advised just to not stray from the tour. (Apparently a day's visit is like having a few hospital x-rays and it's the forests and soil that is more radioactive apparently) Your husband is lucky, I'd love to go one day.
Search Pripyat tours on You Tube, this is a good one: Smile

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/07/2018 10:20

I'd also love to go (professional interest). He will probably get more radiation dose on the flight there than he will from the visit.

hoochymama1 · 29/07/2018 10:23

DS went last April, he still seems fine Grin
