To not be able to boil an egg?!

DuggeeHugg · 26/07/2018 20:36

Literally. I’m not a bad cook. Why does my every attempt at this fail??

Lovely pan of bubbling water. In goes the egg. Press phone timer. Take out egg. Run under cold water. Remove shell.

The fucker is either hard in the middle, or (more often) fucking raw 😡🤬

I have tried all the minutes. All of them. There is no happy medium. Ffs.

Not all eggs are born equal 😄 test with similar sized ones to find your preference.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 26/07/2018 20:43

Put egg in a pan with cold water then bring to the boil with a lid on

Time it from the moment the water starts to boil and take off the lid

For a medium egg 3 mins for soft boiled.

When you get to 3 mins lift out of the water on a spoon and hold away from the pan. If it's cooked it will be dry by the time you count to 5 as the water turns to steam

If it's wet after a count of 5 put it back in and try again after 30 seconds

SilverHairedCat · 26/07/2018 20:46

What are you trying to achieve? Soft boiled for dipping? Hard boiled?

DuggeeHugg · 26/07/2018 20:46

Soft boiled. I wanted to make egg in a cup tonight (low carb diet is giving me the fucking rage) and I can’t dooooo it

I put mine in boiling water, then once it starts bubbling again, time it for 12 minutes. Are you using a reliable timer?

Vitalogy · 26/07/2018 20:48

Oh, and the boiling water is boiled in a kettle first, much quicker.

joopy79 · 26/07/2018 20:48

I thought I could boil an egg, but never got it quite right, look up Delia's method.

DownAtFraggleRock · 26/07/2018 20:49

I drop egg into boiling water. 8 mins from fridge. 7 from room temp. For soft boiled.

12 mins it would be rock hard?

Vitalogy · 26/07/2018 20:49

*that's for hard boiled, I never do soft boiled so wouldn't know sorry.

DuggeeHugg · 26/07/2018 20:49

12 minutes?! Are you painting and rolling it?!

oldsockeater · 26/07/2018 20:50

Start with cold water time 10 minutes in total

MsHomeSlice · 26/07/2018 20:51

egg from fridge to soft boiled wants 4.5 to 5.5 minutes in boiling water

lower it into the pan of boiling water gently and slowly so you don't shock the shell and crack it

once time is up I would prop it up in an egg cup and go at it with a spoon...I cba with trying to peel hot eggs

DuggeeHugg · 26/07/2018 20:51

Ohhh maybe it’s because I keep them in the fridge!!

I google it every single time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Poached on the other hand I can do to perfection!

Vitalogy · 26/07/2018 20:52

pppps, my eggs are from the fridge, I leave them out of fridge for a few minute to stop the popping in the pan, doesn't always work though. Wow, now I've written it all down, there's more to it than you think.

Prestonsflowers · 26/07/2018 20:56

Buy an electric egg boiler, works perfectly every time!!

monty09 · 26/07/2018 20:57

I keep mine in the fridge 7 minutes for a soft boiled egg depending on the size of course and have it every day

Alex3101 · 26/07/2018 20:57

Keep eggs out of the fridge. Eggs into cold water, bring to the boil and time for 3 minutes. Into the eggs cup chop the top off and start dipping your soldiers.

Whitelisbon · 26/07/2018 20:58

Electric egg boiler. Less than £15 on Amazon, works perfectly every time.
My dc have boiled egg for breakfast almost daily since I bought one!

Scotsrule · 26/07/2018 21:00

I use this and my eggs are perfect every time

You can actually buy a nifty Little gadget that does this for you. I can boil am egg but have found my egg boiling machine ridiculously useful. You just add some water to the bottom, punch little holes in the tops of your eggs, put the cover on, push the button and then leave it. You don't have to watch the clock or worry about the saucepan afterwards. When my husband brought it home I thought that it was literally the most useless thing I had ever seen but since having it we actually eat boiled eggs daily as opposed to once a month or so as we used to.

Pengweng · 26/07/2018 21:02

Room temp medium sized eggs.
Put in cold water
Turn on hob and time for ten minutes
After ten minutes drain and fill pan with cold water. Let eggs sit for 1 minute in cold water (this stops them over cooking)
Never over cooked an egg doing it this way.

CasperGutman · 26/07/2018 21:07

Large eggs at room temperature (why chill eggs? They keep fine anyway and they're ready to use). Bring water to the boil in a steamer* then add eggs to the basket, replace the lid and time for 6.5 minutes.

*That's right, a steamer. This has genuinely revolutionised my egg boiling. Previously I could never get consistent results as all the methods required one of two things. Some required me to peer at the water and decide when it had come back to the boil, at which stage I inevitably got distracted by the children and missed the children, throwing the timing into doubt. Other methods give different results with different numbers of eggs. This approach has worked perfectly for one to six eggs at a time so far.

Magicstar1 · 26/07/2018 21:07

Get one of these OP. They’re available in most pound shops etc. Put the egg in cold water with the timer, bring to a boil, then simmer until the colour changes to where you want it. Perfect every time.

To not be able to boil an egg?!

Another vote for electric egg boiler.
