I am due to sail with them and my car at the weekend. My car has developed a mysterious fault that may or may not be fixed by then so I'm looking at rentals. I need to find out if BF allow a change of vehicle and if so how much they charge.

All phone numbers just get engaged tone - no option to go in a queue, just engaged. Lines close in less than hour. Live chat just helpfully says 'offline'. On line amend your bookings link just takes you to one of the engaged phone numbers.

I need to book the rental car now to be sure of getting one at a reasonable price.

AIBU to think this is shit from BF and basically a big fuck you to their customers who can't get in touch at what is surely a very busy time for them. Am so fucking stressed now I could explode?

Very annoying but since you're not sailing till the weekend you have time to try again in the morning.

kyrenialady · 24/07/2018 17:47

They don't normally charge for reg plate changes, we bought a new car after we had booked and we phoned them up and they changed it for free.

This was last year though, so don't take my work as gospel.

kyrenialady · 24/07/2018 17:48

my word not my work!!

AJPTaylor · 24/07/2018 17:56

good luck finding a rental you can take abroad

profpoopsnagle · 24/07/2018 17:59

They don't normally charge if the vehicle is the same size as before. They have just released their 2019 sailings today so I guess that's why it's busy.

PositiveVibez · 24/07/2018 18:00

I had a car accident just before we were due to go on holiday. We managed to buy a car about 2 days before holiday.

I emailed the reservations email address and it was sorted within half an hour. No fees incurred and I found them really helpful. Try emailing the reservations address.

Failing that, tweet them.

Shaboohshoobah1 · 24/07/2018 18:04

Can you take a rental car abroad?

NotSoFastCuckoo · 24/07/2018 18:05

Well, OP, I could write your thread 100 times a day.

Well 10 maybe.

"High volume calls right now ... ring back in 10 years"... every time I call (housing association, the Gas company, whoever, whatever).

Or just the line going dead after 25 minutes holding. Twice.

Fuckers - is all I've got to say.

FatCow2018 · 24/07/2018 18:07

Yes you can take a hire car abroad, you just pay continental cover for it.

brittanyhols · 24/07/2018 18:45

Thanks - I've realized that the rental is fully refundable until Friday, so will have to book it and then keep trying bf. I suppose it must be quite common that people change cars if booking a year in advance . Bloody stressful though...

If you just booked the ferry through them, rather than the whole holiday, is it one of the things you can change online?

I had to do it a few years ago when I changed cars after booking. It's normally only an issue if you're going from a small car to something much bigger, because they may no longer have room.

The lines are busy because they released their 2019 crossing today. The website was down for bookings briefly earlier too.

They are pretty good at responding to general questions by Twitter so that might be worth a try, before phoning later.

This link has details and costs for making changes.

Izzabellasasperella · 24/07/2018 22:41

I tried and tried to amend my booking with them online today, it would let me get nearly to the end then tells me no I have to ring, can't get through and then they closed the office! Hopefully I'll sort it tomorrow.

Cozyblanket · 24/07/2018 23:53

Post on Twitter, they will answer that sooner than the phone (sadly)!
