Been at new job a week. Vomiting.

NCd for reasons of outage.

I started my new job a week ago- it's s a maternity contract, but I'm hoping something permanent will come up as it's a really good company and they like to hold on to their employees.

I woke up just before 5 this morning feeling dizzy and floppy, and nauseous. As of roughly an hour ago I've vomited a few times. I haven't eaten anything that could have given me food poisoning as far as I'm aware, and I don't think it's heatstroke as we've managed to stay pretty cool at home.

My boss was off yesterday due to food poisoning and will be off today too. Not sure if that's relevant.

I'm not sure what to do now. I still feel dizzy and like I may vomit again, but I really don't want to have to call in sick on my second week. But I have several colleagues with pregnant partners at home and I don't want to pass anything on if it turns out I've caught some sort of bug. Any suggestions?

You're sick. Your boss is sick so it seems there is sickness bug going round.

Phone in sick.

Because you are. (hope you feel better soon)

AsAProfessionalFekko · 24/07/2018 06:28

Well you have to call the number sick! There are some bugs doing the rounds. Hope you feel better soon.

ohwhynow · 24/07/2018 06:28

Call in sick. Like you say you don’t want to pass it on to anyone vulnerable. Explain that when you ring, that you don’t want to be off but don’t want to spread anything either. Get well soon x

calamariqueen · 24/07/2018 06:28

Don't go! Of course!! Unless you have form for going off sick every couple of weeks, by the time your contact is over they won't be holding a couple of sick days against you.

Or MN gold - WFH??!!!

Feel better soon Thanks

EmmaC78 · 24/07/2018 06:31

Agree - phone in sick. There isn't much else you can do in the circumstances.

MonicaFaloolaGeller · 24/07/2018 06:34

I could work from home but that would involve DH going in and bringing my back my laptop (he works for the same company). He's very much in the "bone up and get your ass to work" camp.

I also have to WFH this Friday as I have a very inconveniently timed hospital appointment that I can't miss. It just doesn't look very good.

Don't spread a vomiting bug, they're so unpleasant. If your boss gave it to you then chances are a few others have it too. Nobody wants your germs.

Fenwickdream · 24/07/2018 06:44

If you’ve only been sick twice and your well enough to go into work now I highly doubt it’s a bug.
Bugs have you hanging over a toilet for hours.
Personally I’d go or at the very least I’d ring up and say look I’m up for coming in. Your boss has already put the germs in the office, so if it turns out to be a bug anyone’s that’s going to get it will pick them up from that.

LotsToThinkOf · 24/07/2018 06:45

If you're going to be off sick it's certainly more convincing today because your boss if off with the same, so don't worry about it looking fake.

Your DH is an idiot if he thinks you should go into work when you're sick. Please don't go in to work when you're vomiting, it's obviously already going around and you're colleagues wont thank you for it.

LoniceraJaponica · 24/07/2018 06:47

Ignore Fenwick

Fenwickdream · 24/07/2018 06:47

But then I seem to have a different view to “germs” that the rest of the world so appreciate I’ll prob get slated for my opinion and won’t be back to argue about it 🙄

MonicaFaloolaGeller · 24/07/2018 06:48

FWIW I'm posting whilst sitting on the bathroom floor, I've been in here since about 5

Call in sick, I bet you won't be the only one. I was off sick with an awful cold a week into a contract once, manager was absolutely fine.
Feel better soon.

Harrykanesrightsock · 24/07/2018 06:54

fenwick why would you purposely spread a vomiting bug? I really don’t understand it. It’s not just the people who have already had contact with her boss, it’s who she will be in contact with on route to work.

Stay at home.

gamerwidow · 24/07/2018 06:56

Do not go to work if you are being sick. No one will thank you for it.
It’s bad timing but it happens sometimes. Yes you’ll probably have to take the rest of the week off but you’ve got the rest of your contract to show them that you’re reliable. Don’t worry.

BoomBoomsCousin · 24/07/2018 06:56

I tend to be more like your DH, if you can get into the office, then you probably should. It does seem likely you've picked it up from your boss and it's too late to stop the spread at work, so I don't think the "don't spread it" reasoning has that much sway.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 24/07/2018 06:58

Don’t go to work.

gamerwidow · 24/07/2018 06:58

I know fenwicks gone but why would anyone have such an unscientific response to a vomiting bug. It’s a well established fact that you do not go to work if you have had d&v in the last 24 hours. If she’d ever worked anywhere like the NHS where infection control was vital she wouldn’t have such a stupid attitude.

gamerwidow · 24/07/2018 07:00

boomscousin you are wrong. There will be plenty of people at work who haven’t come in contact with the boss bit will come in contact with the OP. Isolation is the only way to stop the spread of D&V your attitude is irresponsible.

errorofjudgement · 24/07/2018 07:00

Stay off today as you’re unwell, but on Friday take the time you need for the hospital apoointment, but then do half a day in the office rather than wfh all day.

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/07/2018 07:01

Call in sick. If you think you’re well enough by all means ask your dh to bring your laptop. Or maybe bring it this evening so you can work from home tomorrow. You should actually stay away for 48 hours from the last incident of vomiting/ diarrhoea.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 24/07/2018 07:01

Call in sick! You don't want to infect everyone! If you were a schoolchild you wouldn't be allowed in! Most companies don't want their whole workforce off either.

LoniceraJaponica · 24/07/2018 07:01

FGS BoomBoom it really isn't on to be so cavalier about a sickness bug. Besides, it may travel south and the OP might develop diarrhea.

I'm going on holiday later this week. I would be very Angry if someone came to work with a sickness bug.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/07/2018 07:02

Don't go in. I hate it when people come in when they've got a bug, it's not fair on other people.

Hope you feel better soon.

wellBeehivedWoman · 24/07/2018 07:03

You just have to call in sick and not worry too much! You're not fit to work, you need to rest and you don't want to infect anyone else.

If it makes you feel better, when I started my last job I did the compulsory three days of training wed - fri then was supposed to start my actual job on the Monday. Only I got sick and missed the FIRST THREE DAYS. And it was totally fine - people actually said to me that they knew I had to be really ill because no one would willingly miss work so early into a new job.

Feel better soon!
