Been at new job a week. Vomiting.

NCd for reasons of outage.

I started my new job a week ago- it's s a maternity contract, but I'm hoping something permanent will come up as it's a really good company and they like to hold on to their employees.

I woke up just before 5 this morning feeling dizzy and floppy, and nauseous. As of roughly an hour ago I've vomited a few times. I haven't eaten anything that could have given me food poisoning as far as I'm aware, and I don't think it's heatstroke as we've managed to stay pretty cool at home.

My boss was off yesterday due to food poisoning and will be off today too. Not sure if that's relevant.

I'm not sure what to do now. I still feel dizzy and like I may vomit again, but I really don't want to have to call in sick on my second week. But I have several colleagues with pregnant partners at home and I don't want to pass anything on if it turns out I've caught some sort of bug. Any suggestions?

And you can't work at all if you're permanently in the bathroom. Flowers Get well soon.

SillySillySausage · 24/07/2018 07:07

It would be very selfish of you to go in and potentially pass this bug onto other people. Stay at home.

IDismyname · 24/07/2018 07:23

I was sick in my second week at work. It was a job I loved and I stayed there for 5 years eventually. Nobody ever mentioned it to me, but I did feel like a fraud at the time.

Stay at home. It’s not worth the risk.

spiderplantsalad · 24/07/2018 07:25

Phone in and explain. If your DH can bring your laptop back and you feel well enough, wfh, otherwise remember that nobody wants your germs and just focus on getting better.

ScreamingValenta · 24/07/2018 07:27

Call in sick - you are clearly not well enough to go in. You could offer to reassess the situation at lunchtime and come in later if you feel better; or call again with an update - this would show you're making every effort not to miss the day. Hope you feel better soon Flowers.

stayathomer · 24/07/2018 07:27

I once walked into an office and vomited on the first day. I wouldn't recommend it though it did show what a lovely group of people they were! Stay home honestly and take care, you'll get better quicker to get back in quicker.

Coolaschmoola · 24/07/2018 07:28

Yep, your boss hasn't got food poisoning...

Pikehau · 24/07/2018 07:29

Don’t go it’s selfish to go in.

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 24/07/2018 07:32

Stay at home. Anyone suggesting otherwise is an idiot. Wait at least 24 hrs since you last threw up. Don't put others' health at risk.

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 24/07/2018 07:33

Oh and get well soon.

Wellmeetontheledge · 24/07/2018 07:39

I would judge you a lot more for going in knowing you are most likely infectious than taking the day off. Sick bugs are horrible and can be dangerous, especially in this weather. Why on earth would you take the risk of passing it on?! Get well soon!

Clionba · 24/07/2018 07:43

Infection control means that you should stay at home for 24 hrs, but for God's sake it's about looking after yourself as well. You don't want to spread it around (cheers to those at my place who did) but also you need to rest and take in fluids. You also don't want to turn up to a new job, vomit and have a diarrhoea episode.

OrgyOfBarminess · 24/07/2018 07:47

Could you speak to your gp over the phone just to confirm, know you self certify sickness for the first three days of illness but just as bit of a back up if your worried?

It sounds like the norovirus it's EVERYWHERE! Two weeks ago all the staff at DS preschool were off on the same day the almost had to shut but all the kids were sick too!

I bet there's more people off than just you, stay home loads of fluids and take care

mydogisthebest · 24/07/2018 07:48

You should definitely stay home. No chooses if and when to be ill and it's just bad luck that you have only been at your job a short while. In my last job someone did their first day and then called in sick. We did wonder inititally if they hadn't liked their first day and were not coming back but they were genuinely ill and did come back. Just one of those things and no one was funny about it

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 24/07/2018 07:49

DH missed the first day of a new job because of D&V once. You're sick, phone in sick. Hope you feel better tomorrow.

Yokatsu · 24/07/2018 07:50

@Fenwickdream Yes you are very very wrong.

The 48 hours after vomiting is there for a reason, so bugs like norrovirus don't spread and to protect the more vulnerable. When you've had a SN child hospitalised from norrovirus you realise its serious.

Whatever your boss has is contagious and heading arpund the office.

Notasunnybunny · 24/07/2018 07:56

Sounds like your boss didn’t have food poisoning after all

Clionba · 24/07/2018 08:00

No need to ring the GP, no need to phone and update work or fret about it or go in later. You have vomiting. Call in sick. Rest. Take in clear fluids. Keep resting until you can have dry toast. Rest again. Recover and do a good job!

Sparklesocks · 24/07/2018 08:03

If you came into my work with a vomiting bug and made me ill as a result I would be livid. Nobody likes sick martyrs.
If you’re too ill to go in that’s all there is to it.

This is what it all boils down to. Stay home, be kind to yourself, stop worrying about what others might think (easier said than done, I know), rehydrate yourself and get well.

CrackerCrisp · 24/07/2018 08:13

Stay at home, you could infect everyone. Your boss clearly doesn’t have food poisoning. You may find you’re not the only one phoning in.

BrownTurkey · 24/07/2018 08:23

There’s a bad one going around now. Stay off today and if you feel well enough to wfh for the next 48 hiurs after stop vomiting then get dh to bring a laptop home. Don’t go to the hospital appointment unless you have been well for a couple of days. Its a blip, they will understand and if your dh wants you to go in then he is an idiot. Bet he won’t when he gets it.

hibeat · 24/07/2018 08:25

You are sick, I hope you've already come. Rehydrate yourself and WHEN you feel better you can work from home. The rule for vomiting is 48 h in my company.

AntiHop · 26/07/2018 20:54

Update op?

AdequateFood · 26/07/2018 20:59

There's a really nasty and contagious vomiting bug sweeping the country. You can't go in, it's not fair to other people.
