I was a victim of crime last night (serious crime and was in ongoing danger). I reported the crime at approx. 1.20am (999), they eventually made their way to my HOME address at 6am at which point I was home (no fucking thanks to them!).

I rang 101 this evening to discuss said crime and was on hold for 23 minutes at which point I gave up holding.
Wtf?
Is there something I should know about? What has Theresa May done now or am I just living in a particulary cunt of a bastarding place in London?

Welcome to the budget cuts.
Every single force is so so stretched.
They've not enough officers to respond to even all urgent incidents. Many travel single crewed into dangerous situations. It was also a Saturday night with the drunks and violence associated.
101 isn't funded properly, not enough handlers to work effectively.

Sorry you had to experience this, but unfortunately it isn't the mets fault themselves, it is the pay masters fault.

legolammb · 22/07/2018 23:12

I had similar recently trying to get through on 101 to report an assault on an elderly neighbour - gave up holding on the phone so logged it online and got a callback around 2 days later. Assumed it was down to cuts.

That said, I've noticed a police van with a few officers who seem to be doing a traffic enforcement along a red route near me by a school during morning rush hour which seems a crap use of resources, unless there's more to it

Train101 · 22/07/2018 23:19

Traffic enforcement still encompasses the law though, they're stopping people breaking the law.
However it can be annoying to see when you've to wait ages for a police response.
Just to let you know if a shout did go out they would be off in a shot.

Storm4star · 22/07/2018 23:24

Well I was the victim of a serious crime and they messed up my case so now the perpetrator is going to walk free. And yes that was in a large part due to budget cuts. I am genuinely wondering how all the tax i’m paying is actually helping me when all these things are cut to the bone.

scottishdiem · 22/07/2018 23:28

Budget cuts.

Oh, and we are comparatively taxed at low levels which is why there are cuts. People vote for low taxes. Glad people might finally see this means low services as well.

Train101 · 22/07/2018 23:29

@Storm.
I'm so sorry and you know what I have the same questions.

Tbh we've a massive national debt into the trillions and clearly they're trying to pay it off.
However there's also so much government waste, I now work in the public sector and if we just cut through all the bullshit and red tape I could do all my tasks in 4 hours and then actually do more work.
If we didn't keep subsidising the lords and mps that then fiddle the expenses.
If we didn't do massive vanity projects that don't bring benefit to he majority of people.
If we spent our money wisely instead of always picking BAE for defence projects.

If we didn't waste so much money arresting and locking up people for minor offenses that could be better dealt with community justice and financial punishment.

And what's more annoying so tax rates, businesses are charged minute rates, Germany charges 30 odd percent for businesses and is the richest in the EU, why is ours so small?

Sort for the rant, from a pissed off public sector employee.

marthastew · 22/07/2018 23:35

I was recently involved with them as a victim of a DV incident and they were amazing.

HollyGibney · 22/07/2018 23:36

I've not had reason to call The Met recently though did regularly at one time due to my abusive ex H. They were brilliant, couldn't fault them. If they're failing now then I agree it must be due to budget cuts. Make me feel pretty depressed that they can't be there for others they way they were for me.

FourAlarmFire · 22/07/2018 23:39

Officers are trying their best but there are now far fewer of them and their caseloads are too high. All thanks to Theresa May as Home Secretary and now as PM. She is despised by all the officers I know. Doesn’t stop it being shit for you though OP. You should keep pushing for their support as they are more likely to listen to the shouty ones! Also have a chat to Victim Support to better understand your rights as a victim.

Redglitter · 22/07/2018 23:42

I don't work for The Met but it's shocking the manning levels were trying to work with. You come on duty and think you've loads of resources. Then you get told who's got to go and babysit a prisoner or vulnerable person at hospital, who's got to sit and watch a vulnerable prisoner, who's got to stand by a locus..... meanwhile your calls list is going steadily up and your available resources are going down at a shocking rate. I hate seeing the poor level of service the public are getting. It's embarrassing having to phone people and say we can't come out in the next few hours or til tomorrow.

Sadly I can't see it getting any better. Believe me the cops are just as frustrated as the public

Waddlelikeapenguin · 22/07/2018 23:44

Sorry to read that i hope you are safe now Flowers

Tell your MP write/email/go & see them.

Train101 · 22/07/2018 23:44

I also want to point out that for a population of 65 million ish we've a police force in the UK of 120k ish.
We need double that, to even start to be able to respond properly.

AdoraBell · 22/07/2018 23:46

Yep, budget cuts. Stepson is a police officer, not Met though.

NameChangeUni · 22/07/2018 23:47

Sorry that you went through this - I hope you’re okay.

I find the met police okay when I have briefly had to deal with them with an incident.

The police in general can definitely be slow and drag their feet in regards to chasing cctv, investigating, identifying suspects etc. Something that happened to me in April is STILL in very early stages of the investigation, cctv has only recently been checked and they are still looking for the man - I doubt they will even find him at this point tbf. Makes me sick as this vile man was stalking me for hours and following me everywhere after I repeatedly told him to leave me alone, and was clearly waiting for me to be alone with him in a secluded area - I dread to think if this creep has done this to anyone else, and if he has assaulted anyone as he was extremely brazen.

hibbledibble · 22/07/2018 23:49

It's the cuts. Sadly London is disproportionately effected as there is souch crime here, and comparatively poor resources. The worst areas of London have been effected the worst, with big spikes in crime, including murders. I really worry about my children living here Sad

user1457017537 · 22/07/2018 23:50

To everyone stating budget cuts are the reason how come there’s plenty of money sloshing around if you go 2 mph above a speed limit, or park and run in a shop for a couple of minutes, you will soon see a policeman then. Fuck off eith the budget cuts excuse

hibbledibble · 22/07/2018 23:51

user I've not seen that to be the case. Traffic enforcement seems to be non-existant here. Besides, illegal parking is not a police matter, but rather a council one, so your point is rather misinformed.

AhhhhThatsBass · 22/07/2018 23:52

To the person who said we have low taxes, I don’t think 50% is low ie 45% plus NI (and let’s face it, NI is just income tax in another form). I have no idea why suddenly the policing budget is being slashed. London is lawless at the moment. About 5 incidences of watches being ripped off arms at knifepoint in the last month in SW London alone. Madness.

user1457017537 · 22/07/2018 23:55

I’m not misinformed my friend dropped a cigarette, it rolled down a drain, she was pounced on by a traffic warden, when she wouldn’t accept a ticket and said they were being silly, 2 police and a Tactical Support Unit turned up up with 14 officers to arrest one woman estate agent who dropped a cigarette.

Pinook · 22/07/2018 23:55

Some economists argue austerity is not the way to bring down debt and such times call for investment. Our govt plough on with austerity.

HelenaDove · 22/07/2018 23:56

Does anyone know if they have made any leeway with finding that jogger that pushed the woman in front of the moving bus because thats gone quiet for a good while now.

coolncalm · 22/07/2018 23:57

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/100million-to-guard-21-royals-around-234485

Quite shocking how much police resources this family use up.

user1457017537 · 22/07/2018 23:57

Ps they would far rather arrest a late 50’s woman estate agent than moped thieves or violent robbers and muggers

Pinook · 22/07/2018 23:59

To the person who said we have low taxes, I don’t think 50% is low ie 45% plus NI

45% is for extremely high earners. 40% is any income above around the £45,000 mark, maybe a bit higher. CBA to check exact figure. Income from around £11,000 to £45,000 is 20%.

BlancheM · 22/07/2018 23:59

They've dropped the case, Helena
