To be annoyed that Virgin Media have dropped 10 channels overnight without telling anyone

Virgin media have dropped the UKTV channels due to a dispute over them paying for them.

This means channels like Gold and Dave have gone, which were my go to channels when there was sod all else on!

What have others done / are planning to do about this?

The same Sky package is £20 cheaper (and includes the dropped channels) which sounds like a no brainer but I'm worried we'll notice the drop in broadband speed as Virgin is much quicker.

I can't help wrt the channels but we left Virgin as I didn't think the TV packages were worth the money. We're now with SKY for TV and Virgin for broadband. This works well for us.

LemonRedwood · 22/07/2018 17:20

I only noticed this yesterday when UKTV had an ad on one of their channels saying if you're a virgin media customer and want to keep these channels then contact virgin media. Went on virgin media's twitter and they had a pinned tweet saying talk to UKTV about it.

I'm very cross because we love Dave and the original shows they have and it's a free view channel but now because we have virgin media we can't watch it.

We're looking into BT TV. We'd have to sacrifice Sky Sports but now that all the rugby is on BT then it's only the F1 we'd miss. BT also much cheaper than virgin.

LemonRedwood · 22/07/2018 17:22

Forgot to say, we would return to Sky if it weren't for trees (which are not ours) blocking the satellite and signal. Even Sky stopped calling to try to persuade us back once we'd told them that was the reason we'd left 😂

MissLingoss · 22/07/2018 17:22

I'm not planning to do anything. This has happened before, with Sky channels. It was resolved, as no doubt this will be.

iklboo · 22/07/2018 17:24

You can get the UKTVPlay app if you've got a smart tv which has Dave etc on. We had a mild panic yesterday. Bloody love Taskmaster!

FurryDice · 22/07/2018 17:26

It’s Gold I’m worried about. Is that on the UKTV app? Gold is my default channel. I know that makes me a bit sad.

bigbluebus · 22/07/2018 17:37

Can't you just access those channels on Freeview/Freesat anyway ?

Shumpalumpa · 22/07/2018 17:39

Gold is not available on Freeview/ Freesat, it's a pay TV channel.

NicoAndTheNiners · 22/07/2018 17:40

You can have virgin broadband and sky tv which is what we’ve got here.

NicoAndTheNiners · 22/07/2018 17:41

Do virgin have sky Atlantic yet btw? That’s the reason I left virgin for sky. Needed to watch game of thrones.

MyNameIsJane · 22/07/2018 17:42

We love Taskmaster too!

Sixgeese · 22/07/2018 17:46

DH just popped into tell me, he loves UK gold and I love Dave. Really not happy.

FurryDice · 22/07/2018 18:04

Judging from Twitter, I think they’ll have a lot of unhappy punters calling them this week demanding discounts. I wouldn’t like to be on their call team right now.

Bearbehind · 22/07/2018 18:13

I'd half thought of hanging out until they agree with UKTV to pay what they need to but they've really pissed me off by not resolving this issue internally and just cutting these services in the mean time.

That and the fact Sky is £250 a year cheaper means I'm off.

I just cba with the hassle of the installation really.

FermatsTheorem · 22/07/2018 18:13

Obviously it won't help with UK Gold, but for Dave, just unplug your internet and watch through freeview instead. (Back when I had a talk-talk box I used to do this lots because for some weird reason the picture quality was subtly different - so I mostly watched on freeview and only ever bothered to plug the talk-talk box in if there was something I specifically wanted to watch).

flopsyrabbit1 · 22/07/2018 18:14

well ive had enough of them now, didnt recieve a letter nothing

been thinking of just getting their broadband as one son is moving out and they dont watch tv down stairs,so guessing i should just get somebody to do an aerial and use the freeview in the tv

actually does anybody know how much just virgin broadband would be??

and does anybody know the cost of an aireal supplied and fitted would be??

thank you

PicklingGherkins · 22/07/2018 18:14

No virgin still don't have sky Atlantic, we have to pay extra for a NOW TV subscription to get that.

BearsDontDigOnDancing · 22/07/2018 18:19

We are moving to Sky.

I am fed up of Virgin tbh.

They always seem to be in an argument with someone losing channels.

Not to mention I am fed up of the flickering screen we get, especially on recordings, or if you have paused or rewound. Then the picture just jumps.

You can now get a dishless sky box so we will be moving over.

We went with Virgin originally due to the broadband but we never get the speed they advertise anyway. And the amount of times it has been off for hours, when DH works from home.

wrenika · 22/07/2018 18:20

If you watch the channels, they've been telling you about this! I don't use virgin - I use freeview - and I was still aware this was going on. You couldn't avoid the adverts on those channels advising about the change and giving links to make your feelings known.

SimonBridges · 22/07/2018 18:20

Discovered this this morning.
We will keep them for internet, 200mb, but we are thinking of dropping broadcast tv all together.
I can watch BBC channels, including live broadcasts, through the Apple TV, and channel 4 and UKTV through the Smart tv. Never watch itv but if I want to then I can through the itv hub via the chrome cast attached to the tv.

MaisyPops · 22/07/2018 18:21

I only heard about it after seeing an ad on the UKTV channels last night. I hadn't seen one before.

We're on sky though.

Bearbehind · 22/07/2018 18:21

Those notices have only been in the last 2 days. If you didn't what those channels then you'd have missed it. I only saw it last night.

I never knew about it until this morning.
I tape shows and only found out online.
I wont be staying with them now.

AustrianSnow · 22/07/2018 18:23

We managed to keep the box when we cancelled the TV because we kept broadband with them.

flopsyrabbit1 · 22/07/2018 18:45

how much is just the broadband with them?
