So ds been in nursery since Easter. Will return to same class September.

Aibu to get stuff to be used in nursery rather than another mug, notepad etc for teacher and TA's?

Would it be appreciated or would I be THAT mum?

I would have loved that when I was teaching.

JumblieGirl · 19/07/2018 14:26

Great idea

Icouldbehappy · 19/07/2018 14:28

Sorry, no. I’m a teacher and I would not like that. I like when I’m given a gift. I appreciate every single card and gift.
I give my hairdresser and beauticians gifts at Christmas etc to thank them. I don’t give them shampoo or wax for their salons; I give them gifts for THEM.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/07/2018 14:28

So they have 2 and 3 year old so I'm thinking crayons, art kinda stuff? Plus two small boxes of choc to share on their last lunch `break' and a heart felt card. 121 will get a small plant to grow and a heart felt card.

I could I hear lots of teachers say they have to buy stuff for their classes, that's why I was thinking it, not because they don't deserve anything. Next year he'll leave them and I'll do something more personal

P.S. I’m not remotely bothered if I’m NOT given a gift, btw!
I don’t expect anything. But I do appreciate them. The gift is to thank ME.

Icouldbehappy · 19/07/2018 14:32

I don’t know where teachers have to buy supplies for their class???
I don’t. I won’t. I can’t.
I sometimes buy ingredients to make cakes etc and I buy them sweets etc at the end of term. I bought my leavers all a present. My choice.

IGiorni · 19/07/2018 14:34

I would absolutely love this. We get endless boxes of chocolates which are hugely appreciated but often get shoved in a cupboard and forgotten about. We have occasionally been bought things for the nursery and as our budgets are so low, they are so useful. A card for the staff is enough to show appreciation.

Purplestorm83 · 19/07/2018 14:36

I Could - I think it’s way more common in nursery for teachers to buy resources out of their own money (although I know some primary teachers who buy pencils, books etc out of their own money too). I think it’s a really nice idea, in our nursery that would be really appreciated and you wouldn’t be seen as “that parent” at all!

Momo27 · 19/07/2018 14:37

I’m torn on this... teacher myself..while I think most teachers would appreciate a gift for the classroom, I wouldn’t dream of buying my cleaner a bottle of cleaning spray or a new mop.

trinity0097 · 19/07/2018 14:39

Fine, as long as you get something personal as well, e.g. a card and box biscuits or something for the team. Get something with a decent date on it so they can save for next term!

UrgentScurryfunge · 19/07/2018 14:40

I buy things like board pens. It benefits the whole class team and stops teachers having to subsidise them from their own salary. I can't think of any school I've worked where there was an adequate supply of such things to last a year. At least since stopping teaching, my weekly food shops doesn't contain a load of cheap biros to enable my students to actually do some work. Alas, natural consequences for forgetful/ feckless students would have just backfired on me for their inadequate work output.

Seems better to buy something genuinely useful than 30x soap/wine/chocolate.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/07/2018 14:41

I wrote an essay in the card, I promise my appreciation of how far he's in 4 months is clear.

It's a group card because I wouldn't know what to put for all the TA'ss and replicating a generic you're great is naff.
His 121 has got her own card because she literally follows him around for 3 hours - she is specifically his although she obviously is great with all the kids

Purplestorm83

That’s fair enough but tbh, I find that bizarre. Why do they do this?
I hope this doesn’t sound rude or patronising but unless you’re the actual teacher in the nursery, I thought the wages were a lot lower than a teacher’s salary? I truly don’t mean that to be offensive, I’m just trying to point out the disparity.
I certainly couldn’t afford to buy classroom supplies and I’d say I earn a good salary as a teacher.

Kitsandkids · 19/07/2018 14:44

I've bought gift cards so they can buy their own resources as they see fit. Round my way everyone seems to buy boxes of 'teacher cupcakes' and I imagine they're all a bit sick of cakes! I've taught. I would have liked a gift card as I always bought lots of resources.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/07/2018 14:44

But gift card for where?

OP posts:
Icouldbehappy · 19/07/2018 14:50

Give a gift card then for a supermarket and then they can buy wine or pens etc if they wish to.
Tbh I’d find it very strange if I were given art supplies/pens etc as a gift! As far as I’m concerned, the gift is to thank ME.
I give taci drivers a tip. I don’t say, stop at the petrol station and I’ll put in a few quid! However, if they use my tip toward petrol, that’s fine. They can choose what to do with it.
Sorry, I just find this a bit strange.

Icouldbehappy · 19/07/2018 14:51

taxi

KittyHawke80 · 19/07/2018 14:52

I think it’s a great idea. I gave a dozen pairs of pants, one year, for the ‘accidents’. They were gratefully received!

Guardsman18 · 19/07/2018 14:55

I gave an electric/battery operated pencil sharpener to a TA that I was working with. She loved it! Have you ever sharpened 100's of pencils?

Something like that maybe?

Icouldbehappy · 19/07/2018 14:58

Ok I can see the point of giving packs of pants etc Grin
I gave in stuff like that aplenty though being honest, it wasn’t new. I gave in lots of outdoor clothing/socks/pants/nursery-branded polo shirts etc that my two were finished with and they were all in great condition. The nursery staff were delighted to receive them.
However, I still wouldn’t give those items (new) as a gift! IMO the gift is to thank the person who is caring for and teaching my child.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/07/2018 14:59

Icouldbehappy would you think the parent was a bit odd, bit lazy or fking ungrateful of all you do? Would it make you think ah bless, heart was in the right place or Jesus's does she think I sit on my backside all day and don't deserve a better gift or just bloody lazy woman probably lazy mother poor kid?

OP posts:
roses2 · 19/07/2018 14:59

I pay over £1k/month in nursery fees. I expect that to cover paint, crayons etc.

I'd buy a present for the teacher. Usually an M&S beauty gift which is easy to exchange if they wish.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/07/2018 15:00

He's not in again now til Sept so won't even be able to read their expressions tomorrow

OP posts:
SleepingStandingUp · 19/07/2018 15:00

State primary Rose's, I don't pay
