We are renting a beautiful slate cottage in a very popular holiday village.
The Cottage is at the end of a cobbled no through lane.
It comes with a paking space outside.
There is a pay and display 2 minutes walk away for 60p an hour or £5.00 per day.
Opp is a well used bakery where holiday makers and builders stop for their pasty.
Where do they park?
Right next to my car, blocking us in and entry to the rest of the cottages.
We are on day 5 of our holiday and I am sitting in the lounge drinking my coffee and counted 24 cars/builders van stopped and blocked in our car since I got up.
This is not an issue though it is far from peaceful!
The first two days we didnt move the car but since the weather got cooler we want to explore rather than spending the day on the beach.
Everytime we go out we come back to find our space is being used.
Even moving the reserved for renters of Birdlady Cottage cones the owner has left in the space.
AND every Tom Dick and Harry uses OUR bin for their pasty wrappers and dog poo.
I am a little fed up that I have to pay for the Pay and display because someone is in my space that is part of our rental!
By the time they move and we go get our car someone else is there.

Block them in, like others do to you

Oldraver · 18/07/2018 11:04

Then the only way round this is a lockable bollard. Maybe you should point out to the owners this has been a pain and they may want to look into it

pippistrelle · 18/07/2018 11:05

Is it a private road? Or are they parking on the drive of the cottage?

(I can see why people demand diagrams on parking threads!)

birdladyfromhomealone · 18/07/2018 11:11

It is a private no through road with the space owned by the cottage
If we block them in on the double yellow lines we would get a ticket for sure, they just park run across the road buy their pasty and go but 24 of them have blocked us in this morning.
photo coming

This is our car parked view from bedroom window,
Cars park next to us blocking the lane and meaning we have constant banging of car doors outside .

This is why they park next to us to visit pasty shop opposite.
They literally park inches away from our car.

The lure of the pasty is obviously too much for many people, and probably at other times of the year, nobody cares where they park. But when the cottage is in use, it's an issue. If the cottage's owners are using the parking space as a selling point, then it's their problem and for them to come up with a solution. So, complain to them. They might at least refund your parking costs.

lornathewizzard · 18/07/2018 11:23

Can you park so you're parallel to the road and further out from the cottage? And yes, definitely complain to the cottage owner

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 18/07/2018 11:23

I don't know if it will work in your situation there (or even of its legal) but my neighbour gets round the same problem by putting two cones on the double yellow lines up by the kerb , placed about a car width apart...place them just enough to stop people parking but not obstruct the road...

If you see anyone parking go out and tell them to move further down the road as they are blocking you in

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 18/07/2018 11:25

Also I would contact whoever you rented the cottage from and ask if there is any chance of a small refund to cover the parking costs...say they didn't warn you about this and it is costing you money each day

ApolloandDaphne · 18/07/2018 11:27

Don't park so far in to the space. Park in the space but parallel to, and near, the road.

Sleepyandtired21 · 18/07/2018 11:28

Could one of you stand in the space while the other gets the car when the space becomes free?

happypoobum · 18/07/2018 11:29

What lorna said - you need to park parallel to the road and nearer the road so that they cannot use the area that is left.

StaplesCorner · 18/07/2018 11:31

I think the owner should have a discussion with the shop so they can put up a sign about parking, and yes the owners might also want to consider a lockable bollard. Parking is very important to me when booking a holiday and I'd be really stressed - as you say its not exactly peaceful is it! You could have had a week in Asda at least there's plenty of parking there (and no dog shit)!

Eliza9917 · 18/07/2018 11:36

I don't see how they block you in. Can't you just reverse and pull out in to the road?

RestingBitchFaced · 18/07/2018 11:36

Can you park where they are so they can't? Also move the bins into the garden or somewhere?

PuppyMonkey · 18/07/2018 11:37

Is there a small outdoor dining set provided with the cottage that you could put in the space next to your parked car? Grin

I'd be contacting the cottage owners/managers now and explain how annoying you're finding it all.

Really fancy a pasty now.

RebootYourEngine · 18/07/2018 11:38

I would mention it to the holiday rental as well as the bakery.

Magicpaintbrush · 18/07/2018 11:41

Just fyi you can see from the photo which village it is you are staying in...... and having been there myself there is indeed a huge car park just up the road. Very annoying. Lockable bollards would be the solution but of no help to you on this particular stay, not sure there's anything you can actually do unfortunately.

Very very pretty place to holiday though.

Magicpaintbrush · 18/07/2018 11:42

Maybe you should mention this on tripadvisor and the owners will do something about it.

fairypuff · 18/07/2018 11:46

Keep all your pay and display receipts and ask for a refund from the owner. Failing that I would definitely mention the problem on a tripadvisor review.

BuggeringNora · 18/07/2018 11:50

You're being far too considerate and parking too close to the cottage! Park it slap bang in the centre of the space, make sure there is no way anyone can squeeze a car in, (on either side!). As for when you go out - is there any way you could wrap some tape or string around the cones and the bin, then put them all in the space? Might make it a bit more awkward for people to move. I'm afraid I'd be marching into the bakery and demanding that 'whoever owns the car parked over the road needs to move it IMMEDIATELY, you are in a private space'. But I'm a mardy cow Grin

clairethewitch70 · 18/07/2018 11:53

Oh Boscastle? Have you been to the Witchcraft Museum? Making a trip there soon promise I won't park outside to buy a pasty

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/07/2018 12:01

I had a similar issue with a rental cottage last year. Advertised as having parking, rarely did and the locals weren't happy with us parking at all. Left a negative review as I felt like we had been misled.

Jaxhog · 18/07/2018 12:03

Go and make some noise in the pastry shop. Every. SIngle. Time. Shout that someone is parking in your designated parking spot, and they must move immediately as it's an emergency!! The pastry shop will soon get fed up, and put up a notice telling their customers not to park there.

But, as others have suggested, park bang smack in the middle of the space. And get a refund from the owner for your pay-and-display costs.
