To think smoking in your home is disgusting

Had this debate with my friends and I was surprised how many of them think it's fine to smoke inside.

I was perhaps naively under the impression that this was something only the older generation did - the only person I know who smoked inside was my late Grandfather - but it seems I may be wrong.

My AIBU is that in my opinion smoking inside is disgusting - it stains and the smell lingers on everything. The house I purchased had been let and the former tenants smoked inside and I've had to completely redecorate. I have been a landlord before and if I had suspected my tenants of smoking inside I would have evicted them. But my friends think this makes me a snob.

So who is being unreasonable?

I think it's up to the person who owns the house tbh. Doesn't make a difference to anyone else, if they're visiting and don't like the smell then they can always leave.

I'm not a smoker btw, just don't have an opinion on what people do in their own homes.

MrsAidanTurner · 17/07/2018 20:50

If they live cheek by jowl with other people and they are smokers its far far better to smoke inside and keep it to themselves than out side esp in warn weather and give everyone else their smoke

Butterflykissess · 17/07/2018 20:52

I remember sharing a room with my mum and siblings growing up. and she would smoke in the bedroom in bed, makes me disgusted now tbh. and that certainly wasnt that long ago, im in my 20s.

Hidillyho · 17/07/2018 20:53

My mum used to smoke in doors. It was grim. I wouldn’t allow my DC to go into a smokers house either (and this would have been the same prior to me quitting)

DragonSnaps · 17/07/2018 20:53

If a person owns the house and they want to smoke in it, then it's entirely up to them. If the house is being rented then they shouldn't smoke in it if the landlord says it's to be smoke free. People should be free to do what they want in their own homes if it's not hurting anyone.

WonderTweek · 17/07/2018 20:54

I’m not a fan of smoking indoors as everything gets stuffy, but I don’t have a problem with others doing it in their own homes. My father in law used to smoke in his lounge (now smokes in the garden) and it didn’t bother me when we visited.

Mrsharrison · 17/07/2018 20:54

I smoke in my home. I have white plastered walls that i wipe down with white vinegar. My non smoking friends assure me they can't smell it. I smoke loose tobacco that doesn't seem to cling like ready rolled ciggies.
I use lots of essential oils and candles too.

Soubriquet · 17/07/2018 20:55

My parents have always smoked in the house and it reeks

Same to my grandparents house

My Dh smokes but both of us are firm on smoking outside only

My family complained at first, especially when it was cold but we stayed firm. It stinks and I don't want my kids around the fumes

MyWaterButtIsEmpty · 17/07/2018 20:55

My parents used to smoke indoors
It was utterly foul
They redecorated every single year as the smoke turned the walls and ceilings yellow
The place needed thoroughly dusting and hoovering for fag ash at least twice a week.
You can smell smokers houses from outside

Leesa65 · 17/07/2018 20:55

Honestly, smokers just can't win with some people can they.

Yes YABU . Mind your own.

AtreidesFreeWoman · 17/07/2018 20:57

Given your strength of feeling on the matter OP why did you buy a house previously occupied by smokers?

Hmm
Racecardriver · 17/07/2018 20:58

Not as disgusting as smoking outside subjecting other people to the disgusting smell.

kardaschundian · 17/07/2018 21:00

I've nothing against smokers, I also smoke sometimes when I'm out. I'm just surprised that people do it inside their own homes.

The house I purchased had been painted (as in the walls were wet) when I looked round so all I smelt was paint. When I moved in I noticed the smell and have since replaced all the carpets. I'm just surprised people want to live with the smell.

Also it was empty and of course the estate agent wasn't about to bring it up...

Inside or outside - it's all repulsive.

At least if they do it in their own houses, neighbours don't have to smell it or have it blown in through their open windows.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/07/2018 21:04

If my children are away and we’re having a party we will open the bifolds in the kitchen and smoke in the kitchen.

HarshingMyMellow · 17/07/2018 21:04

Smokers can't win.

If someone wants to smoke in their own home then that's down to them.
It's not for you or anyone else to comment on.

You smoke when you're out? So you're more than happy for others to breathe in your second hand smoke but are upset at people that smoke in their own personal space?!
Hmm

Hillarious · 17/07/2018 21:06

We visited the house of friends recently. They'd been in the house six months and done some redecorating and washing down of woodwork as the previous owner had been a smoker. When we got home we still had to wash everything we'd taken with us, as it all stank of stale smoke. Absolutely, people can do what they want in their own home, but I really don't think smokers are aware of how much they smell.

Babdoc · 17/07/2018 21:07

It can make it hard to sell the house, as the buyer would have to strip the plaster in every room back to the brickwork and then replaster from scratch to get rid of the stink - it absorbs into the walls. My DD has walked out of viewings of properties to buy as soon as she’s smelled them, as she doesn’t want the hassle and expense of sorting it.
It puzzles me why anybody would choose to sit in an enclosed space breathing a mix of several hundred carcinogenic chemicals. They used to turn up on my bronchoscopy list with lung cancer, it was v sad.

MadeForThis · 17/07/2018 21:11

Smoked in our house when we weee students many moons ago. Certainly wouldn't have done it 10 years ago when I was still a smoker.

Viewed a house a couple of years ago that stank of smoke. Completely ruled it out because of the smell. Estate agent said most viewings ended with a big No due to the smoke smell. They were trying to convince the vendors to smoke outside while the house was for sale. They refused.

SilverySurfer · 17/07/2018 21:12

When i smoked it was my house, my choice. None of your business

UrgentScurryfunge · 17/07/2018 21:14

Your own home is the best place for smoking. I hate it when my home ends up stinking of other peoples' smoke because it's too grim for them to do it in their own home and it wafts in. It's vile in public open spaces too. If I wanted to choke on fag smoke, I'd have started my own smoking habit.

haribosmarties · 17/07/2018 21:19

YABU and I saay that as someone who has never smoked in their life.
Its up to people what they wanna do in their own home and its certainly no more 'disgusting' than lots of things people decide to do in their homes. I think owning a cat is a bit grim as it reeks of cat and you have to keep their litter tray with all their poo in it... yuck... but it makes some people happy and thats what they want and its their house.
Those horrible chemical air fresheners.. some people love those... some people never open windows... some people have loads of animals living indoors.. house rabbits and things even... I once knew someone who had three pet rats they just let live in their sofa!

Shortstuff08 · 17/07/2018 21:20

The house I purchased had been let and the former tenants smoked inside and I've had to completely redecorate.

But later you say it had been painted and you just had to replace the carpets? So which is it? Completely redecorate or get new carpets?

Fwiw, I smoke. Outside. I only have 2 a day. So it's not a huge deal, but I think of you choose to smoke in your own home that's up to you. I don't think people should do it if they have kids, as the kids can't make that choice.

ShirleyPhallus · 17/07/2018 21:20

Yes it’s disgusting

But so is all smoking. Smokers stink and always have bad breath. And if you’re a smoker who thinks you don’t smell, you do. Your nose is just dead to it.
