To think smoking in your home is disgusting

Had this debate with my friends and I was surprised how many of them think it's fine to smoke inside.

I was perhaps naively under the impression that this was something only the older generation did - the only person I know who smoked inside was my late Grandfather - but it seems I may be wrong.

My AIBU is that in my opinion smoking inside is disgusting - it stains and the smell lingers on everything. The house I purchased had been let and the former tenants smoked inside and I've had to completely redecorate. I have been a landlord before and if I had suspected my tenants of smoking inside I would have evicted them. But my friends think this makes me a snob.

So who is being unreasonable?

Oh goody- I haven't seen a smoking thread for a while. The irrational and over the top hatred mn has for smokers always makes me smile.

I don't smoke by the way. And I'm sure people do other 'disgusting' and possibly even smelly things in their own homes. As they are entitled to do.

Another ex smoker here. We smoked in our house for ten years before we both gave up. No plaster stripping here and absolutely no smell of smoke. While soft furnishings do absorb the smell, walls don't.

The point about traffic fumes is a very valid one, anyone walking down a busy road will be inhaling much worse than second hand smoke, particularly from diesel vehicles. I hate the way smokers have become demonised, they really can't win.

My mum smokes inside and it makes me gip. She smells vile and my poor kids so if they go near her house or car.

Really? on what grounds? you do realise a tenancy agreement doesn't override the law?

Plenty of tenancy agreements specify no smoking allowed. Surely most these days?

It makes business sense for landlords to ban smoking. The majority of people don't smoke and wouldn't want to live anywhere that smelled of smoke, so if you own a smoky house then you lose out on a load of quality tenants.

The percentage of people who smoke (at least in the UK, no idea about other countries) is decreasing year after year. Smokers are a smaller and smaller minority as time goes on and laws become stronger. 20-a-day chain smokers in general tend to be of the older generation, so they will eventually become a thing of the past.

To everyone complaining that smokers can't win: good. You shouldn't be able to win.

It depends on whether there are kids in the house. If its just you, smoke away. Stink your house out and ruin your own lungs. Your call.

If there are kids in the house the absolutely not. This 'its my house and if i want to smoke in front of them i will' attitude is just not good enough. I consider it child abuse.
