To think smoking in your home is disgusting

Had this debate with my friends and I was surprised how many of them think it's fine to smoke inside.

I was perhaps naively under the impression that this was something only the older generation did - the only person I know who smoked inside was my late Grandfather - but it seems I may be wrong.

My AIBU is that in my opinion smoking inside is disgusting - it stains and the smell lingers on everything. The house I purchased had been let and the former tenants smoked inside and I've had to completely redecorate. I have been a landlord before and if I had suspected my tenants of smoking inside I would have evicted them. But my friends think this makes me a snob.

So who is being unreasonable?

Yanbu. Moved into a shared house 5-10 years ago. Didn't occur to me people might smoke indoors. Somehow didn't notice any smell when I viewed it. It was grim. Spent a year sitting in my room with a towel along the bottom of the door and the window open in every weather before I could move out!

But I also think smoking is grim in the garden next to mine, at the bus stop, in a beer garden...

Ploppymoodypants · 17/07/2018 21:31

Well I actually think it’s up to the home owner, and if they want to smile it their own home then they should. ( although obviously unreasonable if they are inflicting it on others who live there who don’t smoke and don’t want to breathe it. Totally unacceptable with children in the house)

Mind you I do think it’s gross and I don’t go into tbe houses of people I know who smoke in them and am open about why. DD isn’t allowed in her great granny’s house as she chain smokes all day with doors and windows shut. If she wants to see DD she can come to our house. (And not smoke in it).

But then I also want to sit in a park or pub garden and not have it inflicted on me, so I guess smokers are best smoking in their own home living with other smokers. I hate on a sunny day when you are in a lovely country pub garden and people smile away whilst you try and eat. I think it would be more considerate to move to the car park or something.

I know smokers feel like they can’t win. But at the end of the day, surely the person doing an activity that is not only unpleasant for others but one that can negatively affect others health, should be the one who is inconvenienced.

Mousefunky · 17/07/2018 21:39

If it’s their house, it’s their choice.

starzig · 17/07/2018 21:47

Smokers dont really notice the smell cause they are used to it. Same as dog owners really. Both would certainly make me look for a big discount on a house to help pay for stripping it.

CherryPavlova · 17/07/2018 21:59

It’s disgusting inside or outside their homes. At least inside it doesn’t affect the rest of us except if we have to sit near them.

You answered yourself in your last post OP, in just three words.

I have been a landlord before and if I had suspected my tenants of smoking inside I would have evicted them.

Really? on what grounds? you do realise a tenancy agreement doesn't override the law?

Do you admire Peter Rachman?

MsBagelLady · 18/07/2018 09:36

Smoking anywhere is disgusting isn't it? It affects the people around the smoker, non smokers forced to inhale the smoke from someone else's lungs, disgusting!

Gromance02 · 18/07/2018 09:38

I'll do whatever the fuck I want in my own house. HTH

Bluntness100 · 18/07/2018 09:41

Meh, people can do what they want in their own home. You don't need to visit and you don't need to smoke in yours.

JaceLancs · 18/07/2018 09:42

When I smoked years ago everyone smoked in their own homes
I remember going to parties where the hosts would provide ciggies as well as buffet and drinks!
It was the norm
I gave up years ago and now only have one friend who smokes in her own home
I stay with her occasionally and wouldn’t dream of saying anything
It does affect my asthma though and I only take clothing that I can easily wash as soon as I get home

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 18/07/2018 10:08

All smoking is disgusting, but I'm glad they keep their rancid smells and fumes to themselves inside - I don't see why I should have sitting my garden ruined by selfish idiots. When I rule the world I'll ban smoking everywhere but in people's own homes!

GlassSuppers · 18/07/2018 10:14

I don't like it.

We're in between homes at the moment and are staying with PIL who smoke like a chimney.

My stuff stinks. The place seems dirty and my toddler is breathing it all in while she sleeps.

Gross.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 18/07/2018 10:18

My mum smoked in her house. We drink when we visit and any gifts she gives to dc always reek of fags.We have to throw a lot of stuff away.

TheOxymoron · 18/07/2018 10:22

Oh FFS, worry about your home, your monkeys.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 18/07/2018 10:26

*stink

Aus84 · 18/07/2018 10:28

To those saying it’s up to the home owner to do what they want- yes it is, but OP no, you ANBU to find it disgusting. I find it disgusting too. Along with spitting, nose picking, skirts so short I can see your bum, animals toileting inside, changing nappies in cafes, the list goes on. I bite my nails, lots of people find that disgusting but stuff them.

Bottom line, it’s your opinion and that’s perfectly fine.

user1493413286 · 18/07/2018 10:29

I dislike going to houses where people smoke inside but I also really hate that people smoking on their balcony’s or the garden below then drifts up to my flat....so yeah smokers can’t win I’m afraid.
However I do think it’s pretty unforgivable when people smoke indoors when kids live in the house

NorthernSpirit · 18/07/2018 10:34

Smokers only think about themselves and their own filthy habit.

My dad smoked everywhere at home. In the bathroom, car, everywhere.

My mum (who has never smoked) has developed passive smoking health problems because of it.

My dad (sadly) died of lung cancer and I can’t tell you what it’s like holding your dads hand watching him die because of a habit.

I own a flat and there’s an older couple below mine who are chain smokers. The whole building stinks if their smoke. My flat is unbearable (the smoke comes in through gaps in the buildings pipe work). Been to see the couple loads of times and although very pleasant they say they won’t stop smoking in their own home (their right). That’s fine, but what when it affects everyone living around them? Do we all have to suffer?

Charm23 · 18/07/2018 10:35

I hate smoke. I'm mildly asthmatic and have never even tried a cigarette. I grew up with my mum, dad, brother, best mate and one set of grandparents smoking around me. We have a strict no smoking rule in our house as the smell lingers and seeps into furnishings etc. I've convinced by mum to use an e-cig instead by basically informing her that I won't be happy to have her smoking around future grandchildren.

Sonders · 18/07/2018 11:00

I think it's pretty grim too, but TBH smoking is one of those things I just can't compute and don't understand why anyone would do it.

My mum smokes over 50 a day as has done for over 30 years - in the house, in the car, on the toilet - it's grim. Everything smells truly awful (despite candles, oils, room sprays, open windows etc), and is the main reason why I don't visit very often.

Sure, it's your right to smoke in your own home. I just don't understand why you'd want to spend your life somewhere that is suffocating and stinky.

kashleesi · 18/07/2018 11:04

It’s awful. Completely their choice of course but still awful. I used to have a friend who smoked in her flat and if I knew I was going round I’d wear clothes I didn’t mind washing straight away and wouldn’t bother washing my hair before I went either cos it would need doing as soon as I got home. Sometimes she went in the kitchen to smoke so as not to offend me Hmm obviously I said don’t be silly I’ve come to your house do what you want, but needless to say a wooden door doesn’t really stop the smell coming to the rest of the house.

73kittycat73 · 18/07/2018 11:16

Not as disgusting as smoking outside subjecting other people to the disgusting smell.

Ex-smoker here. See, I don't get this argument as surely pollution from traffic is worse for you?

IAmNotAWitch · 18/07/2018 11:23

I think what people do in their own homes is their business.

If they have kids in the house and smoke in there, they are stupid and selfish.

Otherwise not my business, not my problem.
