Hubby has taken our dog to a local wood, and lets the dog go for a run.
He goes at different times and different days.
He came home and told me that he has seen the same woman ghost five separate times so far. Tonight with bonnet wearing woman made him jump when she popped up in front of him. When he said 'you made me jump', she smiled nodded and walked away from him.

He was quite serious but I asked why he thought she was a dead/ ghost? He said because she is wearing a long coat and a bonnet type hat.
AIBU to suggest that this woman isn't dead, isn't a ghost and is an odd lady with a strange fashion sense?
He is quite firm she is a ghost, and walks along the path but not on it though the trees.

personally I am glad we are going on holiday soon my hubby really needs it asap.
Then again AIBU?

Or is it that these posters are just latching on to posts that confirm their existing beliefs and ignoring any information that doesn't confirm their biases

By 'information' do you mean the anecdotal evidence provided?

Lots of interesting stories, yes but no-one anywhere ever has been able to provide evidence of the existence of ghosts or any other paranormal phenomena under controlled conditions. That's the information that informs the bias.

headinhands · 18/07/2018 11:38

Many of the examples you can give can be explained away

This one?:

^ It was a normal summer night for John Amitrano, working a Friday shift as security for Chicago's popular Logan Square hangout The Owl, but when we went outside, he saw something odd. "I saw a plane flying, but also something moving really awkwardly under it," he told VICE. "It didn't look like a bat so much as what illustrations of pterodactyls look like, with the slenderness of its head and its wing shape. I know what birds and what bats look like. This thing didn't have any feathers or fur, and it didn't fly like anything I've ever seen.”

Amitrano added that the thing he saw—which, according to him, had muscular legs, a jutting tailbone, and a human-like shape—flew in a "strange swooping motion, undulating up and down." After it flew away, he retrieved his phone from charging in the bar and texted his girlfriend and close friends what had happened. “I remember thinking, This was the worst time in the world to have my phone charging,” he laughed.^

headinhands · 18/07/2018 11:39

Do you believe he saw what he thinks he saw? Why or why not?

BertrandRussell · 18/07/2018 11:57

Good old Mothman! Gotta love Richard Gere.

What sort of owl did people decide it was?

Biologifemini · 18/07/2018 12:06

It is always the same type and profile of person who spots ghosts and the like.
If a few surgeons or top scientists started seeing ghosts....... but they don’t do they. It is just the same sorts of people. Who had superstitious parents.

headinhands · 18/07/2018 12:07

And another thing I've noticed. You know how people often say things like dogs, cats and babies are aware of spirits? Could it not be that as humans we spend a lot of time with these three entities.

Furthermore, they can't speak so we can't ask them why they're doing something if they do something that we can't see the reason for, like barking at a corner.

So we spend more time observing them than we do say worms, wasps and giraffes. Although I'm not saying no one has ever said they think worms can sense ghosts. Chances are someone has to have done!

BertrandRussell · 18/07/2018 12:07

And who never have their phones on them......

ShovingLeopard · 18/07/2018 12:34

If a few surgeons or top scientists started seeing ghosts....... but they don’t do they.

This is absolutely untrue, but there will never be enough evidence to convince you of it, because people like this tend to keep very quiet about their experiences, as they know full well how their peers would likely treat them as a result.

You might be very surprised if you knew how many very successful, well-educated and respected senior professionals have such experiences, and ascribe to a more spiritual philosophy/beliefs. But, if you were in their position, would you be open about it? Knowing how people such as yourself would respond?

So how do you explain young children seeing ghosts, or staff in a hospital. Not sure you can profile children

nowshesaturtle · 18/07/2018 12:48

@biologofemini

You are talking unutterable bollocks.

Ironic really, given that you are telling believers, undecideds and those with an open mind that they are Grin

Biologifemini · 18/07/2018 12:53

This is just my experience. Obviously it isn’t yours.
I am not necessarily an unbeliever - but I have only witnessed people like this who are a certain superstitious type.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 18/07/2018 12:55

So because ghosts can’t be easily captured by film, they simply don’t exist?!

Doesn’t prove anything!

Many people believe in ghosts, from all walks of life, but don’t generally admit/discuss

halfwitpicker · 18/07/2018 12:59

There's been many times when I've been looking for something, said 'stop that nonsense, give it back' then found the object bang in the middle of the table or whatever.

I've worked in a few very old buildings and made a habit of shouting out 'good morning!' when I was first in. Keep the old fellas happy.

ShovingLeopard · 18/07/2018 13:03

Biologifemini I totally believe you that this view reflects your personal experience. Some reflection on the sentiments expressed on this thread will provide an explanation as to why more educated/professional/ whatever people tend to keep very quiet. They have a lot more to lose, and tend to operate in professional environments where verifiable data/evidence informs all decisions. They would be mocked/shunned/ passed over for promotion etc if they were open. It's just not worth it. I know, I am one.....

Timeisslippingaway · 18/07/2018 13:05

Well thanks very much to an over posted the tread with the story about the woman pet sitting for her friend. Now I'm sitting here in broad daylight absolutely shitting myself 😂

Isitsixoclockalready · 18/07/2018 13:10

I've often wondered (and this is not based on anything remotely scientific) whether it's some kind of rip in time where we are seeing or can interact with someone from another period in time.

welshmist · 18/07/2018 13:15

Ghosts not being captured on film in this day and age of mobile phones I wonder if these events are so out of the blue folk are scared witless. I worked in an old respite home which had been for quarry workers. Those balls of floating energy were seen. And a lady wandered around at night It was discussed if the charity wanted to go on a ghost programme, it was decided not because it had become a home from home for blind people who might not want to stay there for respite/training.

Well, lots are very open about their religious beliefs. I know many who are personally. Are you saying you know lots who believe in ghosts and keep quiet about it?

welshmist

There might be fewer examples of people getting pictures on mobile phones (though I can't see why that would mean there should be none at all).

But why not ever on CCTV?

"The thing is if you don’t believe no amount of evidence will convince you"
No. Proper evidence scientifically verified would convince me. Just as with anything else.

Laiste · 18/07/2018 13:49

There are hundreds of thousands of clips of film taken by mobile phone or on CCTV of sightings. Google them or go on YouTube. Wether or not you believe them to be true is another thing altogether, but there’s NO shortage of captured woo clips.

BertrandRussell · 18/07/2018 13:51

And it is quite interesting that there used to be plenty of ghost photographs but now everyone has a top quality camera in their pocket -none. The Mothman sighting downthread-he didn't have his phone on him.

ShovingLeopard · 18/07/2018 13:53

Are you saying you know lots who believe in ghosts and keep quiet about it?

Quite a few, yes. I keep my spiritual activities/interests completely separate from my professional life, and quite a few of my friends, as do many others. There is kind of a code of honour that we don't 'out' the people we meet on, for example, spiritual type courses in real life.
