URGENT!!! Does anyone know how to open a door if something if wedged behind it?

Cat had kittens in shed, keeping door closed as there is a fox prowling.
Kids went out to feed/check on cat but she has managed to knock something down and I can't push door in.
They have food and water for now so are ok overnight but I have no idea even where to begin.
I think I'll have to break the door down but DH is away and I am not physically strong and have back problems.
I can't even push it in far enough to see what is blocking it.
The door seems very solid. There is ventilation but no window.

Any ideas?

How much can the door open? Enough for a child to get a hand in? Could something strong and stiff be eased in through the gap and used to sweep from side to side in the area the doors open to?

Jenny70 · 17/07/2018 08:01

How much gap is there under the door? Can anything fit under it to push back whatever is blocked?

And how far does door open? Cat should be able to get out of narrow gap.... maybe some food (warm chicken) outside with door wedged as far as it will go will encourage mumma and babies to waltz out... then deal with door issue when they are out.

can you kick in some of the bottom panels

Jghijjjoo · 17/07/2018 08:30

Waiting for the rescue

ProfessorMoody · 17/07/2018 08:34

I'm for the claw hammer under the louvres thing.

Pinkkahori · 17/07/2018 08:41

They are free!!!!
Thanks so much to everyone for advice and encouragement.
I tried a wire hangar, hammer and screwdriver, everything and that is one sturdy door. I couldn't so much as budge one of the panels.

Eventually when I was taking a break there was the sound of loads of scrabbling inside and when I tried again the door opened a little more.

It was the litter box and mamma cat moved it just enough that I could wedge a stick in and move it enough to open the door.

I'm so relieved.

Call the RSPCA?

Can you get a phone through the louvers? I'm thinking set it recording vid then poke it through and twist about - maybe tie a string round it so you can film inside and see what it is.

Dodie66 · 17/07/2018 08:56

Well done. Can we have pics of the mum and her kittens?

sashh · 17/07/2018 08:59

Cross post but you are now bound by the rules of the littr tray - we need pics.

Pinkkahori · 17/07/2018 09:08

I'll definitely add photos later.
Right now I am downing pints of tea.
Attempting to break down a door at 7.00am is exhausting.
I'm actually quite pleased that I am a weakling and didn't manage to destroy the door considering that all it needed was for mother cat to woman up and help me out. Grin

Kattyy · 17/07/2018 09:08

Call rspca. I guess you need homes for the kittens anyway...

TimeIhadaNameChange · 17/07/2018 09:09

Am so relieved to hear it! Clever Mamma!

Agree that we most definitely need photos!

Slartybartfast · 17/07/2018 09:10

Coming late to the thread, but maybe she wanted some privacy. 😉 Cats are funny.

Ginorchoc · 17/07/2018 10:09

Aw happy ending Smile well done OP and mother cat, good team work. What are you going to do if they’re a stray, I had this issue and now have four cats Confused they’ve been here 7 years now so we are used to each other.

Oblomov18 · 17/07/2018 10:20

Ha ha. Glad it's all sorted!

CocoaGin70 · 17/07/2018 10:42

Love a happy ending - well done OP Star

Imchlibob · 17/07/2018 10:48

Clever mummy cat. Your initial scrabbling around must have made her realise why she was shut in.

TheMadGardener · 17/07/2018 10:59

Hope you are going to call Cats Protection or similar. Kittens need to be socialised and neutered so they don't grow up feral and mother cat needs to be spayed. Thank you for feeding and sheltering them.

Strawberrybelly · 17/07/2018 11:39

What a clever Mummy cat. I'm glad they are free.

LizzieSiddal · 17/07/2018 15:48

Ahh a happy ending!
