URGENT!!! Does anyone know how to open a door if something if wedged behind it?

Cat had kittens in shed, keeping door closed as there is a fox prowling.
Kids went out to feed/check on cat but she has managed to knock something down and I can't push door in.
They have food and water for now so are ok overnight but I have no idea even where to begin.
I think I'll have to break the door down but DH is away and I am not physically strong and have back problems.
I can't even push it in far enough to see what is blocking it.
The door seems very solid. There is ventilation but no window.

Any ideas?

Can anyone speak cat?
If so could you come round and tell the bloody cat to stop being useless and move whatever is in the way instead of wailing at me.

I reckon attacking the door with a saw or sledgehammer is more likely to harm the nursing mother cat than poking around with a wire coathanger.

MinaPaws · 16/07/2018 22:01

Can you take out a couple of the louvred slats to see inside better, and maybe reach in?

ApproachingATunnel · 16/07/2018 22:02

Get something thin, sturdy and without sharp edges like a thin cutting board and push underneath the door?

Pinkkahori · 16/07/2018 22:04

It's a very well built door but that's what I am going to try first thing in the morning.
What kind of saw could I get fairly cheaply that would work?

Can you take a photo of the front of the shed?

Pinkkahori · 16/07/2018 22:11

That's a good idea. Getting dark now so I need to charge phone a bit so flash will work but I'll see if I can get a photo.

Can you use the crow bit of the hammer to remove a couple of the louvered bits?

ApproachingATunnel · 16/07/2018 22:12

Have you got a chisel that could be wedged between the slats and break them?

Thefourmuskateers · 16/07/2018 22:12

Im not sure if I’d be willing to leave it until tomorrow. She’s nursing, she needs food & water. Is there any dry food in there?

Wellthisunexpected · 16/07/2018 22:14

Thefourmuskateers OP says they have food and water.

Schroedingerscatagain · 16/07/2018 22:14

Maybe contact the fire brigade or RSPCA, they’re very good at rescuing animals from tight spots without causing massive damage

In this weather they would attend happily for the animal welfare

LadyPeacock · 16/07/2018 22:15

Could you call out the RSPCA? They seem to do this kind of rescue on the telly!

Pinkkahori · 16/07/2018 22:16

Yes, plenty of dry food and water in there for her.

The kids were going out tonight to give her a pouch of wet food when we realised the door was stuck. She has a litter box in there too. That could be what's wedged between the door and the oil burner.

The mums not wailing cos the kittens are hurt by the fallen item?

(I know someone whose cat had kittens in a cupboard and coats fell on the kittens and smothered them)

Pinkkahori · 16/07/2018 22:18

My dd loves the Australian RSPCA show on TV - that was her first suggestion. We aren't in the UK though and no service like that here that I know of but I'll check it out.

OP posts:
Pinkkahori · 16/07/2018 22:19

I don't think so Plant. Their bed is right at the back away from the door and I heard some little mews so I'd say they are ok. Mum looks fine from the bit we can see when we open the door a crack.

Use the hammer and screwdriver to punch out the louvre bits.

It's surprisingly effective. You should only have to take out 3 or 4 to be able to move whatever it is.

Homebird8 · 16/07/2018 22:22

You need a drill to make a hole big enough to get a saw in. Then a cat flap sized hole should allow you to move the object and pop in food and water. You can patch a little hole like that quite well (probably with the piece of wood you cut out.

Battlingthrough · 16/07/2018 22:25

No suggestions but I hope you get sorted!

Gabilan · 16/07/2018 22:27

Use the hammer and screwdriver to punch out the louvre bits

That. Wedge the screwdriver under part of the louvre then whack the end with the hammer. Then you'll either be able to see to knock whatever it is out the way with a broom, or keep moving the louvred bits until you have a child-sized gap.

PigletJohn · 16/07/2018 22:27

please photograph the whole door, also the louvres, also the hinges.

Can you lay your hands on a spade?

It's a popular housebreaking tool as it will lever open many doors and widows. If it will go in the louvres it would also lever them out.

Subject to pic, it will not be difficult to replace the louvre panel.

thenightsky · 16/07/2018 22:27

Louvres are easy to remove. Just hook the claw bit of the hammer into the middle of one and yank hard to break it. The sides will then slide out. Do it to one low down so you can then shine a light through and see what is blocking the door.

BettyBettyBetty · 16/07/2018 22:29

settles in

Honeyroar · 16/07/2018 22:30

Could you get a crowbar underneath the door? You might be able to poke whatever is wedged and move it, particularly if it's the litter tray. Or a broom or mop handle.
