URGENT!!! Does anyone know how to open a door if something if wedged behind it?

Cat had kittens in shed, keeping door closed as there is a fox prowling.
Kids went out to feed/check on cat but she has managed to knock something down and I can't push door in.
They have food and water for now so are ok overnight but I have no idea even where to begin.
I think I'll have to break the door down but DH is away and I am not physically strong and have back problems.
I can't even push it in far enough to see what is blocking it.
The door seems very solid. There is ventilation but no window.

Any ideas?

Could you crow bar at least one slat out so you can move whatever it is out of the way?

Also there must be photographs of the kittens. This is very important.

Pinkkahori · 16/07/2018 22:33

I'm trying and failing to add a photo. Its very dark so might not be much use but i'll try again.
Thanks so much for all the advice.

Take the louvres out. You can rebuild them later.

TwinkleMerrick · 16/07/2018 22:36

I've not read all the posts so don't know if this has already been suggested. can you use a screw driver to unscrew the hinges and open the door outwards?

Pinkkahori · 16/07/2018 22:36

Photo of door.

How old are the kittens? Are they just born? If the cat has food and water and is relatively safe for the night it may be best to leave them to it, the noise of trying to break in may be enough to scare her away from babies.
Hopefully there is a quiet way in! Good luck OP.

comedycentral · 16/07/2018 22:40

I mean leave them too it until the morning, not for too long.

The hinges are on the other side. I've come to the conclusion that it is 100 times better than the door to the actual house although it is badly in need of painting Blush

Not new born kittens, a few weeks old at this stage.

I can't see the hinges. Look for a "flash" option on your phone.

the louvres are bigger than I expected.

I suspect that if you poke something through the bottom louvre you can move the obstruction.

You could break the bottom louve with a spade and put your hand in.

Otherwise a padsaw will cut the bottom louvre. cut it in the middle and pull, the two halves will pull out.

padsaw

also called a plasterers saw

A cheap one will do, you'll only use it once.

pink I've lightened it up a bit

Thanks shake.
There are no hinges visible on this side PigletJohn.

@pigletjohn wondering if any firm metal implement could pry some of the louvre bit off?

PigletJohn · 16/07/2018 22:46

yes, a spade.

Worieddd · 16/07/2018 22:47

Marking place I want to see kittens

Pinkkahori · 16/07/2018 22:49

I don't have a spade but I can get one first thing in the morning.
I'll try that and if no luck then I'll get a saw of some sort.
It's going to have to wait til morning now as it is dark outside and kids asleep in bed.
I'm sure the cat and kittens will be fine til the morning.
It hasn't been very hot here the past few days and the shed is nice and cool anyway and plenty of air gets in.

Could you use a placemat instead of a spade? Or a slim hardbacked book?

shakeyourcaboose · 16/07/2018 22:58

I know you said spade piglet but just wondered if anything would work!

KokoandAllBall · 16/07/2018 23:06

Consider calling the local chapter of Cats Protection or the local fire station, but the RSPCA should be last on your list or not at all, they do have a tendency to want to take ownership of situations/animals.

Gabilan · 17/07/2018 07:29

I would think both those things would be weaker than the louvre panels and they would break instead. I think it's going to need a metal lever of some kind.

Alibobbob · 17/07/2018 07:44

You could keep opening and closing the door to gently push it out of the way.

What is the floor made of, just thinking outside shed maybe the floor is dirt but could be concrete.

Glitteryfrog · 17/07/2018 07:52

Could you sit on the floor and push it with your feet?

Imchlibob · 17/07/2018 07:56

Given that they have plenty of food and water and a litter tray it's better to be slow and steady.

Those louvres are too low down - I think you should focus on removing one of the head-height panels. Drill a hole in a corner then use a padsaw ad pp said.

yawning801 · 17/07/2018 07:57

What about a baking tray of some sort? Might be a bit flimsy but worth a try? Also I can't see if there is a keyhole from the picture, if there is can you possibly poke something through there?
