To think this cannot be legal...

DS1 13 months would not go to sleep tonight so DP took him in the pushchair for a walk. He came across an absolutely massive snake in the park. Someone had let him out of a large tank apparently (not in the pic). Lots of bystanders taking pics. I know people can have these in their homes, but in public??? Cannot be legal right?

I'm a regular but name changed as I knew people would ask where this was and obviously telling the location could be outing. This is in Roberts Park, Saltaire, West Yorkshire.

This is for real.

WTF?!!!!

To think this cannot be legal...

Pythons are very docile and placid. They don’t move very fast and it’ll be appreciating the fresh air and warmth outside. I take mine out into the back garden sometimes and he has a climb into my small apple tree.

CrystalHCarrington · 17/07/2018 19:13

@UpstartCrow

Best practice for handling constrictors over 6 feet is one person for the head, one for the tail, and one for every 3 feet of snake.

How the hell do you know that? impressed by random obscure knowledge of MNs

SimonBridges · 17/07/2018 19:18

It does remind me of when I was walking with DH through Haight Ashbury in San Francisco and we walked by a man walking the other way.
DH said ‘fuck me, that bloke had a python round his neck’
I replied that I didn’t notice because it was too busy noticing that he was bollock naked!

Salmakia · 17/07/2018 19:25

I can't see the pictures (do you need to be on the app?) disappointed as it sounds like quite a sight!

helpfulperson · 17/07/2018 19:26

Why should it be? 2000 people attended hospital last year after dog attacks but we don't ban dogs. Between 3 and 5 people are killed annually by dogs. When was the last death by snake.

CrystalHCarrington · 17/07/2018 19:27

Salmaika

It looks like the pictures here but in a park and a bit further away.

Compensating?

FoodologistGirl · 17/07/2018 20:05

Ok if it a boa they aren’t poisonous, they strangle. I wound still be wary of that as I heard of a boa snake that would be free to roam around someone’s house. They freaked out and took it to the vets because it would lie down next to them and go ram rod straight. The vet told them to be careful as it grew, as it was measuring them up to see if it could strangle and eat then yet. Could be urban myth but I wouldn’t take the chance. Btw I’m not scared of snakes and have petted many.

Soubriquet · 17/07/2018 20:18

Oh fucking hell!!

I can't believe that myth is still going round.

It has NEVER happened and no vet would ever tell you that.

smilingontheinside · 17/07/2018 20:33

Omg I would have wet myself and my oh would have passed out he's terrified even if they're on TV! !!

Salmakia · 17/07/2018 20:34

Thank you CrystalHCarrington am at work now and my team are all Shock at the size of her. Though she has got a bit of a funny face which is kind of cute for a snake.

Julie991 · 17/07/2018 20:39

A snake doesn't get that big eating worms & flies only , the thought of trying to disentangle a child from a monster snake like that is truly scary .

CasanovaFrankenstein · 17/07/2018 20:43

OMG my cat lies down straight next to me. I thought it was to keep warm affection but now I know the truth!!

Helentwinsplus1 · 17/07/2018 21:08

Taxi college? No idea what happened there

JacquesHammer · 17/07/2018 21:09

Pretty sure the owner has indeed be feeding local children to the snake

FoodologistGirl · 17/07/2018 21:13

You think the Cats purring. It’s really hypnotising you. BTW I do like snakes and all animals

CeridwensCottage · 17/07/2018 21:13

A snake that size will be eating defrosted rabbits I would think. They’re fine as long as they’re fed and don’t feel threatened. Even then, they’d be more likely to hide than strike. They’re actually shy, retiring creatures.

Sudigosan · 17/07/2018 21:14

OK, so I've been a Mumsnet lurker for a while, but this has compelled me to add my first contribution, especially since I clicked on the link someone pasted upthread and I found out this is a Reticulated Python we're talking about! This one might look harmless enough but I cannot get past the fact that just last month one of these snakes swallowed a woman whole...www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/python-eats-woman-swallowed-whole-indonesia-persiapan-lawela-a8402916.html
Yes, I'm aware that the above-mentioned human-eating snake was in the wild and not domesticated like this one but still...it's put me off pythons forever I dare say shudders

Soubriquet · 17/07/2018 21:15

Not necessarily Ceridwen. She could take large rats instead of small rabbits.

Some snakes can be a bit fussy.

Sudigosan · 17/07/2018 21:16

Sorry, you can tell I'm a posting newbie as I didn't manage to paste the link correctly, here it is:
