It’s taken me 8 hours to build an Ikea dressing table one bedside chest of drawers it’s only a small one and tidy out a my wardrobe/ cupboard. I’ve also unpacked all my make up and products putting all my make up into the draw pots and containers I have. Is this way to long to do it in I can’t believe it’s already 9. I’m fucking hot sweaty and exhausted. Only had a few 5 mins breaks two for a snack one 5 min lay down for my back and a few wee breaks. Partners thinks I’ve taken so long to do so little.

I can’t do any of what you did today so congratulations. You should be proud of your handiwork.

Allabitmuchisntit · 15/07/2018 23:04

Fuck off ops partner.

Hth

Mrsmadevans · 15/07/2018 23:06

You did really well OP t do it on your own. I did a glass cabinet from IKEA and it took me hours and even then l put the wrong glass panel in and had to redo it !!!!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 15/07/2018 23:09

In 8 hours I can dismantle all the stuff that my husband had wrongly put together and rebuild it myself. (Yes I’m speaking from experience!)

But I’m an engineer and this sort of stuff comes naturally to me.
It takes as long as it takes!

thebewilderness · 15/07/2018 23:09

They seem to take forever the first time you do one but after a couple more it is amazing how fast we can assemble a flat pack.

There is a learning curve, like everything else.

mathanxiety · 15/07/2018 23:16

Tell him next time he can unpack the house and build the Ikea furniture all in the same day and you will have a turn sitting back watching and making nasty comments.

It would only be fair.

gandalf456 · 15/07/2018 23:19

You did very well to persevere in this heat. I would have just left it for him when he was feeling better

crimsonlake · 15/07/2018 23:22

I am very impressed, you should be proud of yourself.

eggncress · 15/07/2018 23:28

If doesn’t matter how long it takes really.
If it bothers him just remind him you would have been quicker if he wasn’t talking to you and distracting you.
In fact, if he can sit there chatting he’s probably more than capable of helping.

BedtimeTea · 16/07/2018 03:15

It takes as long as it takes. In your own home, you make your own schedule. The world won't end if everything is not unpacked by a certain time. He may be unreasonable because of his pain and nausea, just assure him everything will be done, eventually.

TwoBlueShoes · 16/07/2018 04:39

It took me around 7 hours to do the STUVA loft bed, mostly on my own. Around halfway, I had to call my son up to help flip it. I'm never moving, because there is no way I'm taking it apart and reassembling it again.

I can't really understand your IABU, but if you just moved in the heat then you're probably both a bit tired and unreasonable. I am mostly sleeping during the day and doing stuff in the evening when it's cooler.

aibutonamechange · 16/07/2018 04:48

He's a dick.

daisychain01 · 16/07/2018 05:27

Honestly the two of you need to give each other a break.

Arguing over petty things like this is grindingly damaging to any relationship. He had a migraine, you got on and did the job, even if you were a bit slow. Who cares. Move on, move on!

Enjoy the dressing table.

OhTheRoses · 16/07/2018 05:35

That is why we do not buy flatpack

BrexitWife · 16/07/2018 08:01

He wanted me to build these and carry on unpacking house is full off boxes and it’s a struggle to move around.

He isnt there to give your orders a what needs to be done, esp when HE can actually do fuck all (with good reasons but still).
Time to tell him to fuck off rather than going on a PA revenge.

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 16/07/2018 08:07

That would have taken me 8 weeks! Go you!

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 16/07/2018 08:07

And tell your DH to fuck off.

Undercoverbanana · 16/07/2018 08:08

I didn’t realise there was a law on how long tasks can take.

I also didn’t realise that flat pack furniture was a competitive sport.

How fast does your DP run a marathon? I’m just curious, because I’m pretty quick and I would expect him to keep up .......

He sounds like a patronising knob. It must be great to be peeeerfect at everything.

Sheldonoscopy · 16/07/2018 08:13

You did amazing. Yesterday myself and dp put together an Ikea bunk bed, a chest of drawers and tidied his flat. I’m not exaggerating when I say we wanted to throw the bloody bunk out of the window and some choice words were said. Even better, ordering one for my place so we get to do it all over again 😩😩

Can’t imagine doing all that on my own op. Flat pack is the stuff of nightmares

LakieLady · 16/07/2018 08:21

I think he needs to live with my DP for a while.

DP steams into putting anything together, doesn't bother looking at the instructions properly, loses his rag the first time something goes wrong and usually breaks an important component in his rage. The phrase "Fucking useless piece of shit" is often heard, and the likelihood of the item getting trashed rather than finished increases geometrically with every utterance.

We don't buy flatpack furniture.

Awrite · 16/07/2018 08:25

"You're not the boss of me" is a useful phrase to employ throughout life.

diddl · 16/07/2018 08:44

I think that as it didn't stop him doing anything it doesn't really matter.

Maybe it might have been better to unpack more boxes before assembling any furniture?

It all needs doing at some point though.

Hopefully he'll be able to get cracking today!

Juells · 16/07/2018 09:08

I've just put together Ikea bookshelves, which took an inordinate amount of time :( When I went to put the shelves on I discovered that despite all my attempts to follow the directions exactly I'd put on little bit of wood at the top instead of the bottom.

Turns out those tiny little holes were for supports for the bottom shelf. The bottom shelf now rests on stacks of books :(

It’s taken me 8 hours is my partner being unreasonable
Blaablaablaa · 16/07/2018 09:13

Migraine or no migraine he sounds like he was being a bit of a dick tbh

BolleauxtoBankers · 16/07/2018 09:14

I'm deeply impressed that you managed to build anything at all from an Ikea flatpack, OP, no matter how long it took you. I'm not dyslexic but I can't follow Ikea instructions (the last lot came in Japanese, for some reason, mind you) or the pictograms (can't follow directions using google maps, either, it's probably inherent), so I think you did brilliantly!
