To want toenail fungus to go forever

nomorecoffee · 15/07/2018 16:10

Please help! Can anyone suggest any remedies that work for toenail fungus? I read somewhere that soaking feet in listerine works well...has anyone ever tried it? If so does it work? It's ruined my summer as I would love to wear sandals but feel so conscious. I don't want to cover it with nail polish as I think it may make it worse :-((

I painted my clouded yellow toenail with Poundland version of Vicks regularly for a couple of weeks and it totally disappeared and has never come back! That was about 6 years ago

Watching with interest.

Proper prescription oral anti-fungals will obliterate it forever.

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 15/07/2018 16:29

Terbinafine was the only thing that got rid of mine

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 15/07/2018 16:30

*Strong prescription medication

lilyboleyn · 15/07/2018 16:31

Try Curall. It’s a natural oil thing. Works really well, Costs about a tenner from eBay.

R2G · 15/07/2018 16:32

Go to the doctor or a chiropodist. Also buy a cheap washing up bowl and soak your feet in warm water with apple cider vinegar (anti fungal), also drink a spoonful of apple cider diluted in water every day

speakout · 15/07/2018 16:34

A drop of tea tree oil after ever bath, don't stuff feet into sweaty shoes, don;t be overweight.

This! I picked up a fungal infection on holiday, got the prescription nail paint which was a pain and didn't work so GP prescribed the tablets. He was loathe to do so due to other meds I was on and had to have regular blood tests. He said about 6 to 9 months to clear it but it only took 3.

Vitalogy · 15/07/2018 16:40

You'll have to go cold turkey and get your feet out wherever and whenever you can. Air them all the time, start off with sandals with covered toes if you have to but at home bare feet. Make a hostile environment for the fungus, light and air it no like.

piknmixer · 15/07/2018 16:42

I'd second tea tree oil, just a dab of it after every bath or shower. Cured mine in a couple of months.

LoafEater · 15/07/2018 16:43

I got a tube of tea tree oil which had an applicator like lip gloss sort off. Painted sons nail twice a day with it, getting right down the side of the nail and it was right as rain with about 3 weeks.

dementedpixie · 15/07/2018 16:44

Dh has to take oral anti fungals too after OTC stuff didn't work. He is into his 5th month of taking them and it is working but slowly. He had to have blood tests too as they can affect liver function

PineappleLava · 15/07/2018 16:51

I used this and it has worked.

I was seeing a podiatrist about something else and she recommended anti-bacterial / fungal cream on my big toe and other toes to prevent them being infected. So I got some athletes foot cream and smeared that liberally around.
So far so good.

Twotinydictators · 15/07/2018 19:12

I'm currently treating both big toes in each outer corner. The fungus is in the nail bed, not the nail itself which is why topical treatments don't always work. The meds from the GP can be toxic for your liver and you need to have blood tests which I found a bit much for something which is largely cosemetic (but pretty grim nonetheless!). I've been using Canespro which softens the infected part of the nail - you then scrape it away until only healthy nail remains then use an anti fungal cream on the nail bed twice a day. I've just started to use the Scholl paint on treatment as an extra measure whilst the nail regrows. It looks a bit grim but I cover with a plaster if I'm going out - I doubt anyone pays too much attention! I plan some long term maintenance too - fungal sprays in shoes, bare feet as much as possible, daily anti-fungal cream over both feet and no ballet pumps/shoes without socks. I cant wait to get rid and I'm making sure it doesn't come back... Smile Good luck!

APMom · 15/07/2018 19:18

I’ve had it for years on my big toe and have tried everything but earlier this year I put Vick’s on it and it disappeared. I couldn’t believe it worked but my nail is perfect.

Sparklesocks · 15/07/2018 19:20

Something that properly shifted mine was going on holiday and going in the sea loads..the saltwater seemed to finally shift it!
Maybe a saltwater treatment might help?

Firesuit · 15/07/2018 19:21

I've been to GPs a few times over the years, none were willing to prescribe something that could damage your liver in order to solve a cosmetic problem.

blueskypink · 15/07/2018 19:28

I really don't want to take oral meds that can wreck my liver so that I don't have a crumbly yellow big toe nail.

Having said that, I feel like I've tried every over the counter paint remedy going. With no success. I've had my manky big toe nail for about 5 or 6 years. I go through phases of painting it with anti-fungal stuff religiously. But then in the summer, when I want to bare my feet, I just slap on nail varnish to cover it up.

DrWhy · 15/07/2018 19:33

I was pregnant so couldn’t take anything, in desperation tried neat tea tree oil, on and as much under the nail as I could, twice a day, cutting back any dead nail that was loose. It actually worked!

Cheerbear23 · 15/07/2018 19:36

Yes to Terbinafine. I had a horrible infection which spread to 3 toes, they didn’t even resemble toe nails anymore. The laquer and vicks and tea tree oils did nothing. If it’s a bad fungal infection it lives deep in your nail beds and topical treatments won’t reach it.

gingergiraffe · 15/07/2018 19:38

Seriously, let your infected nails grow a bit so that when you go to the doctor they have a decent sized nail clipping to send off to be analysed. GP will then prescribe tablets for, I think 6 months which will rid you of it. Yes, you will need a blood test after a couple of months to check the medication is not affecting your liver.

I tried so many paint on remedies, none of which worked and were certainly not cheap for about two years.

Incidentally, I had also been suffering from cracked heels for a few years too despite using a variety of foot remedies. Once I had taken the tablets all that cleared up so the cracked heels was obviously a fungal problem too.

Go for it and save yourself a lot of money, embarrassment and hassle

eosmum · 15/07/2018 19:38

I have liver issues so couldn't use the medication. I put neat apple cider vinegar on a cotton wool pad and put it over the nail, and put a sock on every day for 3 months.

AdventuresRUs · 15/07/2018 19:39

Eeek to not being prescribed it.

Mine is affecting finger nails so Im taking it to save them. Im only a few nights on but dod see it reacts with caffeine. Have I got months of caffeine ffee ahead. I only had 1 months presceiption so presumbaly need to go back?

blueskypink · 15/07/2018 19:43

Gingergiraffe - NO THANKS!! My liver is too important to risk it for the sake of a toe nail!
