To want toenail fungus to go forever

nomorecoffee · 15/07/2018 16:10

Please help! Can anyone suggest any remedies that work for toenail fungus? I read somewhere that soaking feet in listerine works well...has anyone ever tried it? If so does it work? It's ruined my summer as I would love to wear sandals but feel so conscious. I don't want to cover it with nail polish as I think it may make it worse :-((

I nearly posted this exact problem earlier today. However I went back through the annals of MN and saw that zinc supplements can help so I bought some maximum strength ones from Holland and Barrett. I’m using Canespro but in my daily foot soak I’m going to put in apple cider vinegar (with the mother) as well as drink a couple of teaspoons each day.

If the canespro doesn’t work I will try Vicks. Can anyone tell me what procedure you followed? Just slap some one before bed? Cover with socks/plasters/bandage?

I’m loathe to try the tablets as I don’t want to take unnecessary medicines so I’m very interested in success people have had with natural remedies.

My doctor just prescribed it without mentioning my liver.... being its fingernails I do need to try . Presumably Id notice if my liver reacted!?

Believeitornot · 15/07/2018 19:46

I tried vicks on my toe and it worked. Had to do it a few times though and keep cutting off the bad toe nail. I rubbed it all around the toe not just the nail.

I also put drops of tee tree oil in my shoes as convinced they were reinfecting me.

I've been to GPs a few times over the years, none were willing to prescribe something that could damage your liver in order to solve a cosmetic problem. But it's not just cosmetic, is it? You can lose your whole toenail, and if it's your big toe nail that will affect your walking.

And what happens when you're old and can't reach your toenails, and have no-one else to deal with them? You need to get it sorted before then.

fernellabella · 15/07/2018 20:06

Ok I will tell you what I did it went and it's never come back but I can't say it's the safest or most recommended thing to do. I tried everything !
I sprayed my nails with mould and mildew remover and then left it on for a couple of minutes 🙈 after a week it was pretty much gone ! I must add that I don't have sensitive skin at all.

Er, yes it is. DH plays cricket and loses his big toe nails every season.

tillytown · 15/07/2018 20:25

fernellabella I'm going to try that, thank you!

Clinicallysilly · 15/07/2018 20:29

Shall we take up cricket to lose the infected toenails?!! It'll save us a lot of hassle and money. I've had mine all my life and nothing has worked, the infection is really embedded in my nail bed. I'll try apple cider vinegar, it's worth a go.

I read on mn a while ago to soak your feet in baby sterilizing solution daily until the nail falls off. Then to continue soaking the feet in the bleach solution until the new nail grows back.

dementedpixie · 15/07/2018 20:30

Dh had several nails affected including both the big toe nails. His liver had been fine with the tablets and he shouldn't need them for much longer

Clinicallysilly · 15/07/2018 20:32

As you can see from picture attached, the infection is quite established.

I pulled the nail out. Possibly extreme, but it grew back in fine and no more fungal infection now. Did hurt a bit though.

You'd need to be a fast bowler!! It's the impact of running up and landing hard which forces your foot against the toe of the boot and bruises the big toe nail....which always turns black and falls off 🤢

agabimou · 15/07/2018 20:38

Vicks really works. I don't know how or why but it does

AdoraBell · 15/07/2018 20:42

I’m using Scholl anti fungal treatment. Apparently you have to apply it weekly for 12 months, until the nail has fully grown out.

Stopitjuststopit2018 · 15/07/2018 20:47

@fernellabella I can’t believe I’m asking this, but what brand of mound and mildew remover did you use!?

Kitsandkids · 15/07/2018 20:48

I have really annoying, itchy athletes foot alongside manky fungal toes and it is really getting me down. A few years ago I had tablets from the dr but they didn't clear it up. I'm also breastfeeding and hoping to TTC soon so don't feel I can use medicated stuff. The itching at night is unbearable.

Singlenotsingle · 15/07/2018 20:49

I used tea tree gel. It worked a treat

fernellabella · 15/07/2018 20:50

It was just the stuff you get in Morrison's in a green bottle I think it's detol ?

Singlenotsingle · 15/07/2018 20:52

Ordered it online. It cost about £5, applied twice a day.

DesignStatement · 15/07/2018 20:54

How do people know the fungus has gone in 3 weeks? Does it not take many months before the nail grows long enough to cut the discoloured nail off?

namechangedagainII · 15/07/2018 20:57

Soaking with white vinegar for 20 minutes a day and then scraping the top layer off. Depending how bad it is should be gone in 5-10 days. I soak cotton wool in vinegar then lay over the nails and wrap in clingfilm instead of putting whole foot in vinegar. Good luck HTH

Boysnme · 15/07/2018 20:59

I had this for YEARS and eventually took the tablets from the doctor. It’s now totally gone and I have no idea why I put off doing it before. I took them for six months even though it grew out quicker than that but I was told to finish the course to stop it coming back. I had a blood test every month to check my liver which was totally fine. So glad I did it after mucking about with lots of home remedies.

fernellabella · 15/07/2018 20:59

Clinically I would really suggest cutting your toe nails down too probably won't help much with the fugues but must be really uncomfortable in shoes at the mo ?

barkwood · 15/07/2018 21:02

I've had this for years, only on one little toe. I've tried vicks, cider vinegar, all the over the counter stuff, filing the nail paper thin, but nothing works. Tea tree oil really irritated my skin, felt like it was on fire. I'm not bothered about the look of it, but it itches like crazy at night. I smother it with athletes for cream twice a day every day to try to stop the itching.

AdaColeman · 15/07/2018 21:05

Cut the nail right back to where it is on the nail bed, it's best to get someone else to do this for you.
Then use Vicks or anti fungal cream religiously, especially on the now exposed nail bed.
Also go barefoot as much as possible, take off your shoes when ever you can.
If you've also got athlete's foot, treat that at the same time as they are linked.
