Has anyone left a tampon in too long

deffonamechanging · 14/07/2018 16:20

This is not aibu but I would appreciate jock answers and this is the one section to guarantee that.

Today I found a lost tampon.

Never happened to me before.
I've been using tampons twenty plus years.

It was in for ten days.

No smell. No itching nothing.

Today got up and my pyjamas felt slightly damp and again a few hours later. The dampness Smelt funny.

Googled it. Had a feel and there was a tampon. It had gone up, went sideways and there was no string. It's no out.

I feel fine.

I've obviously showered etc and had a good clean. Do or should I need to do anything else?

I would call 111??

deffonamechanging · 14/07/2018 16:22

Fast answers! Not jock! Sorry typing on my phone

It needs to come out! Ring 111.

Tinks15 · 14/07/2018 16:24

I would seek medical advice that's quite worrying Shock. Did you literally have no idea it was in?

3dogsandcounting · 14/07/2018 16:25

If you feel fine, I wouldn’t do anything. If however you become ill, have a high temp, a rash etc I would let your GP/111 know about the tampon. If you’re very worried maybe tell your partner, mother, friend about it so they can help you if you become suddenly u well. If you feel fine, you are fine!

deffonamechanging · 14/07/2018 16:25

It is out. Out four hours ago.

I've thoroughly scrubbed myself.

I feel mortified.

I've google it and apparently it's quite common.

Never ever had this happen in over twenty years.

Sorry, did I not understand? I’m presuming the tampon is now out?

user1471459936 · 14/07/2018 16:26

I've done this. But the tampon was well and truly stuck. I had to have antibiotics for possible blood poisoning.

Musicaltheatremum · 14/07/2018 16:26

If it's out and you're well there's nothing else to do

SabineUndine · 14/07/2018 16:26

If it’s out I would just ring 111. I left one for 48 hours by accident once but 10 days is a long time.

WeirdScenesInsideTheGoldmine · 14/07/2018 16:26

It’s happwned to me before, once I pulled out two! (Drunken mucky student)

3dogsandcounting · 14/07/2018 16:27

I would think it’s a relatively common occurrence. Bet it won’t happen to you again!

user1471459936 · 14/07/2018 16:27

Missed out the bit when I had to have it removed at A&E...

Oysterbabe · 14/07/2018 16:27

I know someone who had one in for a month, it was found when she went to the Dr about a rancid smell. She was fine.

adaline · 14/07/2018 16:27

If it's out now and you feel fine I see absolutely no reason to ring 111 or go to the GP.

TSS or any kind of infection is actually incredibly rare and would have been noticed well before now!

GetOffTheTableMabel · 14/07/2018 16:28

I did that once about 25 years ago.
It wasn’t me that found it eitherBlush!
I did the same as you, removed, good soak in the bath. Got on with life. Only lasting effect was embarrassment. Blushing again now.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 14/07/2018 16:28

Yeah, happened to me, rang NHS direct as it was then and was told - wash with soap and warm water, wear cotton knickers, if any smells or you feel poorly seek advice then.

Twas absolutely fine, and as you say, quite common.

Ohyesiam · 14/07/2018 16:28

Look out for rash, fever, vomiting, general feeling poorly.
I imagine that as you are fine and it’s now out, that you will be ok, (ex nurse, no expert though!)

Saharaw · 14/07/2018 16:28

You'll be fine. TSS is really rare. They won't do anything unless you have symptoms. Friend went to hospital to have a lost tampon removed as she couldn't find the string. Just couldn't get it out. They removed it and sent her home. No blood tests or monitoring. Just told her if she got a fever/pain/abnormal discharge etc (I know because I went with her)

Canshopwillshop · 14/07/2018 16:29

If it’s out now and you feel fine then I wouldn’t worry but obviously if you start to feel unwell then call emergency Dr. Even in cases where tampons have been left inside for long periods, toxic shock syndrome is still very rare.

greenlynx · 14/07/2018 16:29

I would go to A&E, you need it out. You won’t be able to do it yourself

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/07/2018 16:29

Me! It was over Christmas a couple of years ago, everything was very busy, I wasn't in my usual work routine etc. I finished my period and then about 6 days later came across the tampon string in the shower. I have a shower every morning so really coudnt' work out how I missed it before. Blush.

I immediately removed it and was paranoid about TSS for the next few days but all was ok. Just read up on TSS symptoms and if you start showing any, contact 111 immediately.

deffonamechanging · 14/07/2018 16:30

Yes it's out.

So it had gone up further than what is usual.

The string had disappeared.

I did think at the end of my period I'd put a tampon in. I had a check. Felt nothing.

When I got it out today it was very far in. It was only after googling symptoms that I decided to without being crude really have a look deep. This is mortifying.

It had gone further up than anything has ever been up there, the string had gone, it was sideways so even harder to feel or get out.

I use mini tampons as I am very very light.

I feel fine. No fever etc.

Thing is, when I rang NHS direct it was staffed by actual nurses. Nowadays they'd probably tell you to go to A&E. Just for that, I'd not ring unless you feel unwell.

deffonamechanging · 14/07/2018 16:33

I've only had the nerve to post after two large gin cocktails.

Thank you ladies I feel a little less mortified now.
